What do you think about IB elementary schools?

The horrible elementary school I work at just became an official IB school. I honestly didn't expect that to happen for many reasons but now I think IB is just a BS label. Maybe it's harder for middle schools or high schools to become IB. submitted by /u/iam_adumbass [link] [comments]

Naked and Pooped

I’m new to home health after working on a spinal cord injury unit for the last couple of years. Today was the second weirdest thing that has happened in the first month so far. (The first was the hoarder home… but that’s a post for another day). I’m going to see an 88-year-old male to basically just do a routine visit and make sure that he doesn’t have any exacerbation symptoms from his CKD and CHF. I’m staring at this great big tree in the backyard. I feel like it must be 100 million years old and it is surrounded by old lawn chairs covered in rust assorted other scrap metal and detritus. His wife answers the door and I introduce myself and ask her how she’s doing. She says “not good!” I ask her what’s going on and she says “my husband fell!” I find this poor old skeleton of a man lying supine on the bathroom floor between the toilet and the tub completely naked with his lower extremities covered in feces. I throw some gloves on get him off the floor stand him up while he holds his wa

Nurses of Reddit: How do you deal with the suffering and death you witness?

I don't fit in...

That's pretty much it. I don't fit in at school. I love the kids and the culture of the school, in general, but I have definitely been added to a cliquey-gossipy-girly group that I don't fit in with. I am not looking to make friends at work, but it seems like I'm not heard on a professional level because of this. It really sucks and I'm not sure what to do. If I don't contribute, I know someone will go to admin and comment about it. But, when I do, sometimes I'm listened to and others I'm not simply ignored or the conversation is redirected, but looks and whispers are shared right in front of me? I'm an only child and I've always struggled with having appropriate social skills, which I'm aware of. I can either be comfortable or feel rigid and like I'm walking on ice in conversations. I've gotten a bit more toward the "fuck it" side and I've been trying to make myself comfortable. I spend a majority of my time at work, and I do feel like I have good ideas... But the feeling of rejection

Working with Gen Z

I recently went to a conference and one breakout session was about generations (I know we've all sat through this). One quality of Gen Z that was brought up is their general ability to leave a job and not have another one lined up. Another trait is their desire to meet exact expectations but not exceed them. We all know that schools are built on the free labor of its staff. On one hand, I do commend Gen Z for putting down boundaries and not allowing themselves to be taken advantage of; on the other hand, I am curious how schools will be impacted by people not taking up extra duties or not staying at a school for long periods of time. What do other people think will be the outcome? And, do us old people need to get on board or are there things we need to do to keep school systems functioning? Edit: I will just edit to emphasize that my question is how do you predict schools will change with the push from Gen Z to establish boundaries? Also edit to add: What I meant by not staying at a s

Nursing has changed my view in life and it makes me feel guilty

I’m a 25 year old female and have been a nurse for 4 years. I have always worked peds and started in a neurology and kidney/liver transplant floor then made the switch to peds ER. In the past 4 years I’ve seen death, learned about all kinds of diagnosis in children that I never knew existed, and seen a lot of kids suffer from poor quality of life. I love taking care of my kiddos but I have this guilty feeling all the time that I want to have children but I could not handle a kiddo with special needs. I’m scared to have my own children and go through pregnancy because of everything I’ve seen. I respect deeply all the parents I work with on the daily and see the way they go above and beyond for their children. Yet, I struggle with the feeling that I would rather let my child go than have them spend their life as total care patient and it makes me feel like I’m a horrible person. How do I let go of this feeling? I know I can’t live my life in fear but it truly scares me. submitted by /u/k

Did cpr as a bystander for the first time and I am not okay

I have been a nurse for 11 years now. I’ve worked in the ER, maternity and now postpartum. I was at the pool today with my kids when I hear the whistle being blown and not stopped. I looked around quick and saw a child trying to hold/pull another child out of the pool. I threw my snacks and (not my best parenting moment) ran to the child and told my 7 year old to pick up the stuff I dropped and go get her dad. 3 of us nurses helped pull him out, myself and an ER nurse confirmed no breathing and no pulse and I just immediately just started chest compressions. He was so limp and pale, eyes completely fixed up when we pulled him out. Thankfully after almost 2 minutes he started breathing again was talking to us. I cannot stop questioning myself- I know I didn’t feel a pulse but I keep thinking I didn’t check long enough or maybe could it have been there and thready? I asked my husband how my cpr looked because I was so scared to do it on a child(pre teen aged), but he keeps reassuring me

Offered ELA position and teaching one elective-- would this be considered a "cushy" job?

Hi, For context I have not taught for 20 years now. The last time I taught I was at a very challenging school with full classrooms, teaching 5 different levels and one planning period. I have been doing offered an 8th grade ELA position with maximum 16 kids, two sections of the same level , and one elective class. The rest of the day is lunch duty and planning time. Essentially I will teach three classes daily, but only two lesson plans needed. I am afraid of taking a position where I feel like I am over taxed immediately especially at my age (46). On paper it sounds reasonable, but just wanted to bounce this off of other teachers. submitted by /u/WatercressFar8121 [link] [comments]

Adult icebreaker questions

I’m attending a union leadership training and they asked for volunteers to plan an icebreaker. I’m neurodivergent and hate icebreakers, so I volunteered so that I could have control of that experience. Since most icebreakers seem superficial and trivial to me, I want to prepare three question cards for each person in attendance (20 people). The cards will be different colors for three categories: education related, you outside work, and recommendations. The idea is that you’ll start with three cards and then approach anyone who is available. You choose which card from your own hand that you want to answer and then the other person does the same from their own set. Then after you have shared your answers, you choose a card from their hand and exchange. That way you always have one new card and can change what you are answering if you wish. You can choose any color card, so if you prefer to only share answers related to education, you can collect three cards from that category in your fi

Personalised thank you from a med student

Permit me a little self praise 😂 I'm a plastics wound care nurse, I've got a long term plan to be a nursing lecturer at applied sciences uni, I asked about it here a few weeks ago. Anyways we had a 5th med student in our unit learning the ropes and their instructor introduced me as a really good teacher. I was shocked because that particular surgeon is a perfectionist and I took it as high praise. The student was with me and I threw her kind of in the deep end, debridement tools in hand with me watching over them, telling them what to do and not to do. We spent an hour together debriding the legs of an elderly man who had been two months without debridement. I must have made a big impression. They had their last day today and I got to my workstation with a hand written card thanking me for my excellent instruction and patience and a small chocolate. It's not much, but I'm proud of myself and I hope they remember something about wound care I their future career. It feels very cool that

Is Vandalism being normalized?

I feel like every year vandalism has become more common at my school and the consequences don’t meet the crime or don’t fix anything. I’m not sure if this is happening in other schools but when a student destroy the restroom, Chromebooks, breaking pencils, etc… the punishment doesn’t feel like anything was accomplished and eventually the student vandalism’s behavior becomes a norm. For example, students puts a banana in the restroom clogs it, and the result is a small suspension(1-3 days), apology letter, and maybe helping (if you call it that) custodians after school clean the campus for a day or two. The next week the very same student breaks a desk or any other random x thing and the pattern repeats itself. I’m at loss to understand why are we allowing students to act certain way and expect them to become better people. Is this pattern also happening at your school? submitted by /u/BlueArmy1905- [link] [comments]

When Did Resume Headshots Become a Thing in Nursing?

I work per diem now at my old doctor's office, and the office staff asked me to help vet the resumes of nurses applying for clinic positions and NP students seeking clinical placements with us. I've noticed a huge uptick in these colorful, highly stylized resumes that include a headshot. Most of them seem to have the same template. To me, the photo just distracts from the actual content of the resume. It's especially common among NP students, particularly those coming from schools that provide little or no assistance with clinical placement *cough* Walden *cough*. I understand that headshots are common in industries like entertainment and modeling, but why has this become a thing in nursing? Is this a new trend, or are schools actually recommending it? submitted by /u/ExiledSpaceman [link] [comments]

My sons teacher was terminated, and she's now asking me for a reference as she's wanting to take legal action on the school. What should I do?

Hi guys, For context - my son attends an independent private school. His teacher was terminated due to a couple of parents complaining about her teaching methods and how she handles behaviour in class. The parents and staff were left in a state of shock when she was terminated effective immediately. There was a decent uproar about it amongst parents and staff members. She didn't even get the chance to say goodbye to the students. Anyways, she's wanting to take legal action and asked me to write her a reference on how good she was to my son and what I think about her as a teacher. I understand my reference may be used as a statement if she's going to take legal action. I truly believe she was treated unfairly and think she was an amazing teacher. I had no issues with her and really loved her just as a person in general. I want to write the reference for her, but I'm also wary as we intend to send all of our kids to the school from prep to year 12. I want to back her as she's an amazing

Been a nurse for 7 years; critical care and trauma. I quit my job in April and took a much needed break. Started applying for jobs these last 2 weeks and WHOOPS your girl had too much of a good time on this break 😅😅 6 weeks pregnant. If they offer me a position, do I tell them at that time? Also, i’m curious if anyone has worked ICU while pregnant - After finding out the news I applied for a cath lab job because I’m nervous the stress/adrenaline of ICU would mess up my pregnancy, and i’m also terrified of getting kicked. "Why don't school administrators do more to protect the classroom from disruptive students?" I have the answer.

Many teachers (and students and parents) rightfully complain that modern school administrators don't do enough to protect classrooms from the disruptions caused by students with behavioral problems. One reason is they are afraid of being sued by the parents of disruptive children. The Masschusetts Appeals Court recently ruled in favor of a school in Doe v. Thorell, 276 NE 3d 210 - Mass: Appeals Court 2026 - Google Scholar In the case, concerned parents sent a letter to the school principal and assistant principal, the school committee, and the superintendent, with copies to the teacher and certain other parents detailing that their child had "been exposed to obscene and profane language, bullying towards others, endangerment of property and other people, and most startling, racist remarks regarding his friend. Notably, these behaviors are exhibited across all school settings (e.g., classroom, hallway, gym, library, music, and the lunchroom)." The letter also detailed numerous instances

Did I miss something during student teaching?

Hi Reddit, My teacher preparation program did not cover classroom management, and my last teaching job was a disaster. I didn't know when to ask questions and when to not do so. Even though I have several years of private school "teaching" experience, I've never been responsible for classroom management until I took a job at a Texas middle school. It was a decent school, but my poor self onboarding left me not really clear on what was in the pacing guide, or even where it was. I'm not really sure how everything sort of fell apart at that job, but it did, and I resigned shortly before Covid. I don't want to be a classroom teacher again, but I feel like this is going to affect jobs I'm more qualified for, such as tutoring and online teaching. submitted by /u/krb501 [link] [comments]

Inappropriate or just generous?

Let me start by saying that my son's music teacher is super sweet. She has been teaching him for two months now and just recently every time he memorizes a song she will buy him a rather expensive gift. The first one was about $25 and she promised him two more for memorizing two additional songs that would probably total up to $50. While I appreciate how kind and generous she is, something inside is telling me this is wildly inappropriate. I was a classroom teacher for many years and would never buy my students something more than a few dollars unless it was a huge whole class incentive. Master in public health online + lpn in person

I’m looking for honest opinions because I feel like I’m trying to piece together a backup plan and I’m not sure if it’s smart or if I’m overthinking. I’m 22 and finishing my bachelor’s degree in Public Health this summer. My cumulative GPA is around 2.9. I’ve already been accepted into an accelerated BSN program that starts in August, but the biggest issue is financing it. The ABSN program is about $45,000, and I don’t have a cosigner. I’ve been applying for scholarships, looking into military programs, hospital sponsorships, private loans, pretty much everything. Right now I’m not confident that I’ll be able to cover the cost. Because of that, I’ve started looking at LPN programs as a backup plan. The thing is, my parents are very focused on education and I know they would see an LPN program as a step backward, especially since I already have a bachelor’s degree. They would probably be much happier if I went straight into a master’s program. submitted by /u/Popular-Ear5697 [link] [com

Middle vs High School Teachers?

I want to know, in the secondary world, (Middle/High School), are there a lot of teachers only at a specific level only because the other option wasn’t available for whatever reason at the time? I’m asking mostly because every time I meet someone who has said they have done both in-person, (MS and HS), they tend to say that they preferred one over the other. I don’t necessarily see the same situation with teachers that have worked ES and MS or ES and HS. The main reason I’m asking is because I’ve been interviewing at MS and HS at various districts and trying to judge the best opportunity for me personally, (relocation, school culture, financial/income, and where I would fit in the best). Overall, I would say I do have a preference for HS; however, it feels harder to make a decision with all the other factors on which way I should go. submitted by /u/Nearby-Shower-8392 [link] [comments]

Sick patient with airborne precautions

**THIS IS A MADE UP STORY NOT BASED ON A REAL SITUATION FOR LEGAL REASONS** My last shift I had a terrible shift, had to have been my worst ever. I had a patient right at the start of shift after getting report, noticed the HR was alarming on the monitor in the 160s. I asked day shift nurse if HR had ever been that high, they said no. The pt had active TB so I threw on an N95 and went in there, not knowing I wouldn’t leave the room for 2 1/2 hours. The HR was increasing even to the 180s, quickly ended up calling a rapid. Because it was an airborne room I had to keep the door closed obviously and no one was coming in to help me. People were all standing outside and looking in but no one was actually doing anything. It was just me and 2 doctors. They were giving me many verbal orders and I wasn’t even able to document anything because I was facilitating them. Eventually I opened the door and said “I can’t be the only nurse in here.” Luckily one coworker came in and helped me. The rapid l

I’m on shift rn and can’t focus… I feel so terrible and incompetent. We admitted a patient around 11:35 PM who had orders for PRBCs, platelets, and cryoprecipitate. She was a CCU transfer, transferred that pt with critical labs that time. I wasn’t very familiar with cryo since I haven’t transfused it before, so I asked my charge/head nurse for guidance. He told me to give the blood first, then the platelets, so that’s what I did. What I didn’t know was that the cryo was supposed to be transfused within a certain timeframe after it was ordered. I also didn’t realize cryo is typically only one bag and infuses pretty quickly. I had assumed it would come after the other blood products since that’s what I was told. By the time we got to it, the cryo had expired and couldn’t be used. I was later t

Does anyone notice a palpable electricity/“aura” in the room when someone is dying/ends up dying?

I’ve noticed this since the first time I saw a patient pass away. I’m giving up on my dream

33 F. ADHD and Anxiety. I was the kid who played teacher with a class full of stuffed animals and a little chalkboard eisel. I graduated high school and immediately knew I wanted to be a teacher. I had a great nannying job in my neighborhood and that contributed. College was easy for me, finding a teaching job afterwards was not. Once I finally did, I felt immensely underprepared. Classroom management was always the hardest part. The school I was at (charter school) liked me though, and were ultimately willing to work with me to find a good fit. I switched from art to 4th grade to reading intervention to 1st grade. Eventually after 5 years I left that school because I didn’t feel like I was growing. I took a position teaching online which I enjoyed because it didn’t require the constant behavior management and overstimulation I was getting in the classroom. Am I burnt out (or close to it)?

I am in about my 4th year of teaching and have grown in teaching strategies, classroom management, parent communication. I tend to coach new teachers, I like to research, I enjoy the act of teaching and seeing when something clicks for a child. I like to tutor one-on-one for struggling readers. My first year of homeroom teaching I had a violent student that hit students almost daily, would hit and made me go to the emergency room because he kicked me in the groin area. I was fine. Admin eventually fired me after they started barring me from meetings about said student and blamed me on not "having enough authority". Second year, I come back with more structure, strictness and no-nonsense. My class was also a lot more easier to manage. I make strides in coaching and leading fellow teachers on curriculum and best practices, and the principal of that moment would make me go to 1 hour meetings about my hairstyle, my dress or that making kids write in a journal was against "best practices".

I can handle the codes and stressful situations but it’s the situations where a 90 year old man with late stage dementia who is actively dying and looks absolutely miserable that get to me. No PRN’s that would make him more comfortable because the family believes he will pull through again and isn’t ready to go hospice. Tube feedings, foley, rectal tube, extensive wound care, and worsening secretions that won’t suction. This patient is on a telemetry unit btw. Why is there always a shortage of teachers in MS/HS, but not Elementary?

Everyone always talks about the shortage of teachers and such, but it is always middle and high school where the shortage is and Elementary is "oversaturated". Why do you all think this? Is Elementary really that much more desirable? submitted by /u/Unhappy_Session8589 [link] [comments]

School Nurse setting

Hi guys! So I’m preparing for my second job as a school nurse and I love kids. I’ve done a lot of work around kids, but I know they’re little humans who you have to get creative with. I would say I only have work acute in adult settings. So any advice do I need to look at and learn beforehand? How about emergencies? Experiences as a school nurse is welcomed as well! submitted by /u/KaleProfessional7211 [link] [comments]

About 1% of our student population died this past academic year

I am a teacher at a high school. 8 students have passed away out of ~730 total, all from different instances. Is anyone else in a similar position? This just seems like a wildly high number and I’m having a hard time processing. submitted by /u/udderly_amazing [link] [comments]

Because it was determined (and a decision upheld after the hospital appealed this decision) that HCA broke the law, violated workers' rights, and made a free election impossible. Employees have been encouraged to "become educated" about the vote, when in reality the "education" has been in-house "labor relations meetings" held by paid union busters. The CEO sent mail to all nurses asking them to vote no, citing increased staffing and "better workplace safety" - with no specific evidence of how that's been implemented. Anyone who works as Swedish will tell you this is simply not reality. Two thirds of Swedish nurses left after the last union vote. This says a ton about the working conditions. Nurses need representation, support, and bargaining power in a system that exploits them consistently and egregiously. If you're a Swedish nurse, VOTE YES this week. Let's build a better and
