Reprimanded for “unapproved overtime”

Has anyone else had this issue in California? My DON said she’s the only one who can approve overtime in emergent situations. Well, I had a fall on my hall during med pass and I also assisted another nurse with a fall. My pt was on blood thinners and I was doing Q15 neuro checks after so it put me behind a lot. She texted me on my day off saying I should have called her after I called the doctor and next of kin to get the overtime approved. Yet right after, She said my reasons for staying late were unjustifiable. Now I am anxious on my days off because she wants me to have a meeting with her when I get back. I really don’t wanna lose this job.. I saw a post similar to this describing how it’s due to funding being cut after the big BS bill. Has anyone else seen this pattern with penny pinching hours worked? None of my fellow colleagues ever finish on time, so they just clock out and continue charting off the clock. It was always my dream to be a nurse and I take pride in it, but this is

Room changes, yet again...

Found out today that I'm being moved to the other side of the school and leaving the best room I've ever had. I've been in this room for four years, my longest tenured classroom ever with TWO built in cabinets and an AC stuck on 69 degrees for those four years. That being said, I am grateful that I'm still employed, and still have two more weeks off before I have to go back and move. Sad that I'm being banished to the trailer park (the portables), but overall still happy to be working 9 months a year and get off at 2pm everyday. submitted by /u/TheRianKing [link] [comments]

I withheld my opinion from a patient and feel like I lied to him

More like venting than ranting. I work inpatient acute rehab. We had a patient that had a thoracic laminectomy and fusions, with a 10" incision and staples along his spine. He developed an infection (despite thoroughly documented wound care by staff) and the start of a dehiscence in the more inflamed areas over the course of about a week. It fell on me to take pictures, contact the neurosurgeon, and arrange for this patient to be seen in the town where the surgery was performed (about 1.5 hrs away). The patient was very anxious and catastrophizing, so constantly ringing his bell to ask "what ifs" and repeat the litany of potential complications that the neurosurgeon had recited to him. Is it infected, are my screws popping out (lol?). I had to repeatedly say that it wasn't our place to diagnose anything related to the surgery, that we weren't a neurosurgery unit, that yes it could be infected but it could also be fine, we can't know anything until the neurosurgeon looks at it, etc. The

How to deal with mean patients? How to get over it?

Today a patient was mean, it was not that bad tbh I tend to be super sentimental and almost cried. He seemed anxious and I asked if he was feeling a lot of pain (to let his nurse know if so) he got mad and said that I was being stupid “I just been through x and x how would you feel?” I proceeded to draw blood and I barely touched him when he started yelling at me cause I hurted him sooo bad with the tourniquet and started insulting me “I would you do that!” (maybe I did it, maybe he had a bruise I didn’t see idk but the tourniquet wasn’t even tied yet) I took the tourniquet off and told him someone else would come. Cause I thought “if by any chance I have to adjust the butterfly he’s going to get even angrier” when my trainer came he said I tied it too hard and stuff like I said i didn’t tie it he didn’t give me the chance. I wanted to cry soooooooo bad is my first time ik I’m being silly but how do I get over patients like that cause I know it won’t be my last or worse experience. Wha

Anxiety returning to ICU

Hey y’all! To start, I’ve been a nurse for 7 years. During the past 7 years, I’ve had 2 jobs in the ICU: PICU and CVICU. Sadly, I ended up leaving both of those jobs due to nasty coworkers who were bullies and toxicity. For more context, I was not the only RN who left for those reasons while I was working there. I recently accepted a job in a general ICU. I’m really excited, but I’m also a little apprehensive about going back into a role that may be made more stressful by coworkers. It’s NOT about having a thick skin or not. It’s about not wanting to be in an environment where the people I work with go out of their way to make mine and other nurses’ jobs more difficult. I’ll be on night shifts at this job. I worked days in the other positions. I guess I’m just worried of a repeat. I really want to be successful. Can anyone share their POSITIVE experiences working in critical care, or any advice in general? Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/Sleepy-Fox4235 [link] [comments]

Year Round Schooling, yes or no?

Hi everyone, As many of you know other countries around the world practice year round schooling. A few years ago at a PD the Facilitator asked the staff how they felt about it and over 80% of the teachers agreed that there should be year round schooling. I first learned about year round schooling from Adam Ruins Everything and it opened my eyes to some of the things I never noticed. Such as students not able to receive regular meals, not all parents able to afford expensive summer camps, and just how bad the summer slide is. I have been giving it a lot of thought and I figured out that since a calendar year can be divided four ways into 13 weeks. Wouldn't it make sense to have 11 week marking periods followed by 2 week breaks but still have all the regular holidays? How do you all feel about year round schooling? How would you want to see it implemented to positively impact students, teachers, and parents? submitted by /u/No-Common7872 [link] [comments]

What was the point of even interviewing me?

I am a brand new teacher, graduated from college 3 years ago with my BA in Elementary/Special Education. I’m licensed K-6. I have been a stay at home mama to my two littles since being in college. I did a long term 2nd grade 6 month sub job where I student taught. I also taught Prek-8 PE/health part time for a catholic school. I have a 5yo & a 15mo. I’m a newly single mama, (husband is a severe alcoholic, doesn’t want to stop despite 6 rehab stays). I need a full time job with benefits. I have had about 15 interviews, every single one they go with the other candidate. Today, I had an 5th grade panel interview at a school I subbed at this last school year & LOVED. It went so good. I thought I had it. We were all laughing & I felt so at ease. The other principal for the other elementary sat in too. She has a part time special ed teacher position at her school. worst case i’ve seen thus far in my career as a peds nurse - 1 yr in

hi all - i’m gonna avoid giving details that identify anything about this patient that can be traceable or where i work, i’m just sick to my stomach at the moment. i work in peds subacute/peds LTC and got an admit of a baby who suffered HORRENDOUS child abuse injuries. we unfortunately have multiple abuse victims at our facility but this one is so beyond graphic i truly can’t even fathom it. several TBIs, fractures all throughout the body, and much much much more that i will not disclose. i’m not the best at “leaving stuff at the door” and i know ill probably get a little better at it, (i’ve been a nurse for about a year) but im just beyond nauseated and have been thinking about it all day. anyone have any type of advice that helped them cope with this stuff better? i started caring for this patient today and am planning to give the best care i possibly can but i can’t get it off of my mind submitted by /u/ShoddyCommercial9207 [link] [comments]

Did y’all had to get side jobs during your student teaching days?

So I’m about two years, I will be starting student teaching, well less than two years. I’m an online university student studying elementary and special education and getting my Bachelor’s degree. Anyways in February 2028 I will be doing student teaching in a general classroom. I will be doing that from February to April 2028. I have a class after than. Then in the fall of 2028 I will be doing student teaching in special education from August to October 2028. I know for the General Ed class I would have to leave the autism school to do the do the gen education student teaching. I don’t know if they will let me go back to the house in school to do sped ed student teaching. I know student teaching is unpaid so I’m just curious if y’all had to do a side job for income. I'm Dreading Going Back to Work... When do I start to worry?

My district starts mid-August. I'm still at that point where I am positively dreading the idea of going back to work. My last year wasn't bad, but just the idea of the constant drain, the constant exhaustion, and most of all, the constant stimulation - well, I feel anxious just thinking about it. I'm not usually excited to go back to work at this point in the summer, but normally I wouldn't be feeling overwhelmed by the thought of it. And now I am anxious about the fact that I am already overwhelmed. I have been thinking about leaving teaching for a few years, but there isn't anything I can really pivot into as the breadwinner of the family. I need to figure out a way to accept the job for what it is. submitted by /u/EyreBear16 [link] [comments]

Narcotic discrepancy - quit preemptively or wait to potentially face consequences?

Some context: I'm an RN in Florida. Early last year I forgot to scan a narcotic and was drug tested at work. It was positive for cannabis. In order to keep my job and avoid possible discipline from the BON, I self enrolled in a state drug monitoring program for nurses (IPN). I got a two year contract and I have about 8 months left. I get routinely tested for drugs and alcohol and need quarterly reports submitted by my supervisor. Current situation: Last weekend I had another discrepancy. A patient was getting intubated and I was asked to pull meds. I pulled more narcotic than what was ordered. In the chaos, I forgot to return the extra amount, creating a discrepancy in the pyxis count. It was only the following day that I realized what I had done, and I preemptively reached out to my nurse manager to explain the situation since I knew she would be getting a report from pharmacy at some point anyway. She said she hadn't received anything yet and would keep me posted. That was two days a

Summer School Edition: Opening the assignment is not the same as DOING the assignment!

My school district went virtual for summer school due to the amount of parents complaining they had no way of getting their kids to in-person summer school. We also provide free laptops and wifi to kids who are enrolled upon request. Today, halfway through summer school, a student messaged me on Google Meet and asked how to open his assignment on the online classroom. I was confused because he’s already done this 10 times so I responded “the same way you always do!” His mom takes a picture of the message and emails me, attaching admin, basically saying she’s tricked me into admitting he opens his assignments. …I never said he didn’t? The grade notification emails I sent her said he doesn’t complete his assignments and often submits them entirely blank. She doubles down and says if he’s coming to class and opening the assignment he should be passing regardless of whether or not he’s completing them. I just sent her the summer school expectations that were listed on the district website

[US] Student-safe foods

I plan on buying myself a small fridge for my classroom (to store my lunches and waters), and it got me thinking about hungry students. In the past, I brought apples, peanut butter crackers, etc, for hungry students, but peanut butter is pretty much a no-go these days, so I could use some advice on what foods I might get for my students, some of whom lack food security and others of whom are just plain hungry. Any other L&D/mother-baby/NICU/PICU/Peds nurses have tokophobia?

I do not want kids because of this, although there are many other reasons as well. I’ve briefly worked in L&D, and have experiences in both mother baby & NICU. I get that it’s not common and we always see the worst of it all, but how could u see a traumatic birth and think yea i wanna do that?? Like im talking placental abruption, full DIC, pulmonary embolism, 3-4 degree tear, placental retention, PPH, and for babies shoulder dystocia, HIE, extreme premature birth, NEC, CP.. I guess for peds nurses you see the aftermath of it and how it leaves such pain and suffering to the baby - child where they’re permanently disabled. Does any of it affect how you see pregnancy and childbirth or having kids at all? Suddenly feeling like I’m quickly running out of summer but there’s so much I wanted to do

I have a little less than 3 weeks left before I go back to start the new school year. I’ve spent most of my summer basically just relaxing. I’ve read, gone to the pool, drawn in my art journal, watched tv, and allowed myself to just be a little lazy while still fulfilling all of my adult responsibilities. I definitely needed that rest. But now that summer is ending soon, I’m stressed! I don’t want to waste a moment of this precious free time just relaxing anymore. I had wanted to go on a couple different day trips: theme park, aquarium, zoo, art museum, etc. all 1.5-2.5 hrs away. I am single and none of my friends are teachers like me (being a teacher at 23 is quite the interesting experience) and have the time to go do stuff all the time, so I’m thinking about just doing it alone. Solo is not usually my style, but I read in a book (Set Boundaries, Find Peace) about not waiting for the “right” people to be “ready” to do things you want to do and being willing to just do things alone. Assigned a subject I hate. How to not be miserable?

I was notified that my position was being eliminated last spring. I teach I specialized high school elective and only have the very specific endorsement/license that goes along with it. I anticipated being laid off over the summer given my seniority and the few positions that remain in my district. I gave away my teaching stuff and was looking forward to collecting unemployment while I figured out my next step. Somehow my district found a way to place me. I will now be teaching middle school musical theatre, a subject I absolutely hate. I have zero experience in music or theater and I cannot stand musicals. No offense to anyone who does like them, I just seriously hate them. I guess any license works for middle school electives and that’s how I ended up there. I even double checked with the district to make sure my license was sufficient and apparently it is. So now what? I was already over teaching when I still taught my subject, but now? How am I going to get up everyday and not hate

Has anyone else dealt with this kind of response from parents?

Some background first: I taught eighth grade at a very strange charter school with awful academics. A lot of the kids barely turned anything in, couldn’t write a sentence with punctuation, and had vocabularies so limited they sometimes couldn’t even carry on a normal conversation with each other. They just didn’t know enough words to explain what they meant. But what really shocked me was the parents. At conferences, I showed them the little work their kids had turned in. I figured we’d talk about tutoring, extra help through the school, literally anything. Instead, at least five parents just smiled and said some version of, “Well, he really enjoys your class and he’s having a lot of fun.” Like... okay? He can barely think for himself, but at least he’s happy? The wildest one was a mother who said she pulled her daughter out of public school because the teachers there “asked too much of her.” She preferred this school because “the teachers are her friends.” Obviously, I want kids to en

Signed daycare contract with non-compete + 120 day notice… but just got offered a 2nd grade teaching job. What do I do?

Hi everyone, I could really use some advice. I recently signed a contract for a lead teacher position at a daycare , but honestly it has not been what I expected at all. I thought I would be working in a preschool classroom, but I’m actually with 2-year-olds, the place is pretty disorganized, and my “training” has basically just been working as a regular daycare worker. I’ve only been there for about 2 weeks , but I already know it’s not a good fit. The issue is my contract includes: - a 120-day notice requirement - a non-compete clause At the time, I thought this would be a long-term position, so I signed it. BUT… I just got offered a 2nd grade teaching position at a private school , which is exactly what I went to school for and what I actually want to do long-term. Now I’m really stressed because: - I don’t want to get in trouble legally I’m not even planning to put this daycare job on my resume I feel bad because they think I was planning to stay long-term but I also don’t want to

Principal emailing to urge us to complete our mandatory training modules during the summer...

... the message is of course framed as "this way you won't get overwhelmed when school starts and you can focus on what matters... the students!" But if the district actually gave a shit about the students they would not saddle us with 16 hours of mandatory trainings that are not designed to provide actual learning (they are the same exact training every year, delivered in monotone recorded powerpoints with voiceover) but they only actually serve as something for the district to point to in order to place the blame on teachers when we inevitably make a mistake while trying to juggle chainsaws that are on fire.... not to mention all the testing at the end of the module focuses on minutiae and legal wording instead of actually important things to keep in mind as a teacher. Sorry principal, this will just get done while I am sitting during yet another useless PD during inservice week. submitted by /u/Lithium_Lily [link] [comments]

Boyfriend who is an ER nurse is worried he’ll lose his license… how likely is that?

Hi everyone. I am not a nurse myself, but I wanted to ask about something going on. This morning my boyfriend who has been an ER trauma nurse for almost 16 years was forcefully admitted to a nearby psych ward because his crazy ex called the cops on him saying he was homicidal, suicidal, and violent. He was dragged out of his house in handcuffs this morning and dragged to the hospital to be evaluated. Very dramatic situation. I’m not too worried they’re gonna say anything about his evaluation, but I’m worried about his job and license. As I said, I am not in this field so I’m not sure on how it works, but he was telling me he could lose his job and even his license just for having been put there, even if the doctors clear him. Obviously that would be a big deal and ruin his career and he’s very worried about it, so I thought I’d come here to ask how likely is that really? We live here in Nashville TN, and I wouldn’t think as long as they clear him they could take his license away right?

Rapid called on patient three times in 24 hours, what does management do?

I work on a med-surg floor and called a rapid on my pt the other day; it was her third in 24 hours. Not doing well, low BPs, acidotic, kidneys failing, boatload of comorbidities. Our DON happened to be up on the floor, so one of the nurses told her about it, so like maybe she could help facilitate transfer to ICU for this pt. She walked into the room during the rapid, looked around for about 30 seconds, then whispered something to my ANM and walked out. My ANM looked and me and said “she said your tubing isn’t labeled.” During the rapid still mind you. Pt didnt get transferred to ICU until the night shift team came in and they put her on ECMO. Do you wear makeup to work?

I’ve worn makeup for my entire decades-long career, and lately I’ve found myself wondering if I just…want to stop. I’ve never worn much…just a little to look polished. But on the rare days I’ve forgotten, students inevitably ask if I’m tired or sick. It makes me wonder how much we’ve all been conditioned to see a made-up face as the “healthy” or “professional” version of a woman. When I was a much younger teacher, I think wearing makeup helped me look a little older and more authoritative. I don’t need that anymore. At the same time, I don’t want to come across like I’ve stopped taking care of myself. I’m curious where the line is between looking “put together” and simply looking like…my actual face. submitted by /u/BobcatKebab [link] [comments]

New teacher here. student's comment about my weight really got to me

I'm a new kindergarten teacher, and one of my 5-year-old students looked at me and said, "You're fat." Then added, "My mom says you're fat at home," and started laughing. I just ignored it but honestly it hurt. What makes it harder is that I've actually been working really hard on myself. I used to be much heavier and I've managed to lose a few kilos. I work out regularly now because I'm trying to become healthier. So hearing that today made me feel like none of that progress matters. I'm also new to teaching, so I'm still learning how to handle situations like this. I wasn't sure if I should say something or just let it go, so I chose to ignore it. How do you stop it from getting under your skin? Right now I just feel embarrassed, angry, and sad. submitted by /u/mimsy_whimsyy [link] [comments]

Applying to LAUSD (Los Angeles, CA). I currently live in Florida.

I'm hoping to hear from anyone familiar with LAUSD or large public school district hiring. I first reached out to LAUSD on June 23 about a full-time elementary music teaching position. I was issued a Short-Term Staff Permit (STSP) and connected with the Arts Education Branch. Here's the timeline: - June 23: A coordinator called me the same day and has been very responsive throughout the process. - I emailed the hiring coordinator and program chair expressing my interest. I also mailed my résumé and cover letter via USPS in addition to emailing them. - The program chair has never responded to one of my emails. - June 29: I was invited to an in-person interview the following day, but I live in Florida and couldn't get to Los Angeles on one day's notice. I asked whether a Zoom interview was possible. - After that, communication became very sparse despite a few professional follow-ups. - The responsive coordinator later encouraged me to contact the hiring coordinator again and said he woul

HELP! IT glitch or conspiracy against me?

I have a bizarre situation and desperately need some advice. I teach middle school ELA in Georgia, btw. I did not renew my contract at the end of last school year because the school (mostly admin) was very toxic and it was very far from my house. I was looking to teach in a different district, the one in which I live. I have been applying for countless (at least 30) jobs with almost no responses. However, on three separate occasions, after I've emailed the principal to let them know that I've applied via Frontline (applitrack), I've gotten a reply saying they cannot find my application on Frontline. I've provided the principal with my resume and my Frontline applicant ID#. They still can't find me, but they say they wanna move forward with an interview, based on my resume and experience, and we'll figure out the application issue down the road. HOWEVER, in each of these instances, the principal has emailed me again to basically say, "never mind, we had a charge of heart, we wanna cance

Asked to be in a political ad

I’m going into my 6th year of teaching, and have spent my summer break volunteering for a gubernatorial candidate. They are filming a campaign ad highlighting issues with equitable school funding, and when they found out I’m a teacher, asked me to be a part of it. I know we’re typically supposed to avoid political bias in the classroom. Is it rational of me to be paranoid a d worry that somehow this might come to bite me in the butt? submitted by /u/yyyyyggggg123456 [link] [comments]

I'm Searching for Fun and Interesting Room Entry Questions for 8th Graders

I write questions on a mini white board that my 8th grade students have to answer before they enter my classroom. This will be my third year doing this. Year 1 I lasted 8 weeks. Year 2 I made it through 3 quarters ( my intern did one of the quarters to equal four for the students). In my effort to build stamina, I want to make it through the whole year this year. Mostly the students like it or they warm up to it. Sometimes I have themes: would you be a superhero or a supervillain? What would your super power be? What is your kryptonite? What is your superhero/villain name? And that gets me through one week, cuz Monday is "What is one thing, besides sleep, that you did this weekend?" But even that gets boring. I really struggle with making these questions fun and interesting, but low stakes and little thought. I have 5 minutes to get kids into the room. A question that flopped is "What is one hill you will die on?" They didn't know what that meant. They all loved "If you were a dinosaur

Responsive Classroom Morning Meeting (Grades K-8)

For those of you familiar with Responsive Classroom’s Morning Meeting, you know that “through the repetition of many ordinary moments of respectful interaction, [Morning Meeting] enables some extraordinary moments” (Kriete and Davis 2016). The book describes one first grade teacher’s realization of this manifestation, as she was waiting for class to begin, and witnessed her students greeting each other unprompted, and cheering for something a student shared. If you use the Morning Meeting model published by Responsive Classroom, and have observed any of these extraordinary moments in your classroom, I would love to hear about them. :) submitted by /u/Beginning_Camera512 [link] [comments]

Hemodialysis Nurses: Need help.

May I ask if you have encountered the machine Diacare SWS 4000? Company is pushing for us to start treatments without Diasafe filters telling us because the water test is good. The clinical team is fighting back. We are insisting that we're not going to operate without the Diasafe filters. submitted by /u/cetirizinemydessert [link] [comments]
