However, I recently found out that we are the only floor at our hospital that does it this way. Something I've always stood by that I am not seeing posted anywhere is start singing now new teachers. In the car, in the shower, when and where you can. Start weeks before school starts because you need to train your vocal cords to get used to the amount of talking and projecting that you are going to be doing once school starts. Without it, I always end up with a sore throat by the end of the first week. Edit: I will add, as others have pointed out-a mic and speaker setup is a great option for many people. I personally do not use them, but even with one the amount of speaking you do in the first week after a summer off will wear your throat out. Others have also suggested watching some voice training videos online to better train the voice for speaking-a very good suggestion as well. Tonight I randomly thought about my elementary school teacher and decided to look her up online. I wasn’t expecting anything, maybe an old school page or a picture, but instead I found her obituary. She had passed away a month ago, and somehow I’m only finding out now. It completely broke me. I’m lying in bed crying over someone I haven’t seen in years, and it feels strange because I didn’t expect something like this to hit me so hard. I think it made me realize just how much of an impact teachers have on us. They spend years helping shape who we become, encouraging us, teaching us, making us feel safe, and being there during such an important part of our childhood. As kids, you never think your teachers will get older or that one day they’ll be gone. You just assume they’ll always be there. Then years later you randomly search their name and find out they’ve passed away. I wish I had known sooner so I could’ve paid my respects. It’s also making me think about how fast time is moving.
I’m currently in Intro to Med Surg and this class is only 8 weeks. I have a midterm next week but everytime I try to study I just can’t seem to find any motivation. Hello Everyone! A fun little class was added to my schedule this year lol I am an instrumental music teacher thats been leading performing ensembles for the past 10 years. For reasons I dont exactly understand, I have been given a Freshman Advisory class of 37 students and apparently I am borrowing a classroom from another teacher who is an itenerant to lead that 1 class everyday. Hi! I’m an Australian nursing student from Victoria and I was wondering if many Australian (or not) nurses here genuinely use AI in their practice? Our tutors are very promotional when it comes to AI and as a young person it makes me and many of my peers concerned for the future of nursing (and ethics and the environment in general). One of my tutors (who also practices) literally said when she didn’t know the answer to something she would ask Google AI. Also, I met a Charge Nurse while on holidays and I asked her how much she used AI and she mentioned that she never uses it and neither do many of her nurses. She also mentioned the standard for the nurses she’s been receiving has been really low and I quote “that might be why I’ve been getting so many sh*t nurses” (in relation to the AI conversation). Hi Teachers, Going through school I always enjoyed the pizza parties/celebrations/ice cream days, etc. And now that I have a little one going to school I’m excited for her to have that experience too. I know teachers are oftentimes saddled with paying out of pocket for some or all of these if Admin isn’t kicking back to cover the costs for these, with many using them as a reward for goals achieved, and milestones met. My question: is it typically OK for a parent to occasionally sponsor one of these events? I don’t have a ton, but could definitely justify shelling out $100-$150 for a classroom party every few months, even if just to allow them more frequently or prevent them from not happening at all. I’d even be open to covering the cost of a field trip for the class, or any of the kids who couldn’t come up with the funds, as I was that kid and am thankfully in a different position as an adult. I am a pretty experienced teacher and focus my classroom management around building relationships which has worked well for me overall. This past year I got a new role as an interventionist, and sometimes had to skip my intervention groups to sub in a classroom. This is where I ran into problems because I didn’t have relationships with the kids. I am a short woman, and am naturally a very kind and nurturing person. I have a calm, quiet voice and the moment the kids see me coming in to sub they think they can get away with anything. I don’t let them and am strict about rule following, but I’d like to develop an air of…toughness. Like an “I don’t play” vibe. How do I do this? I have a coworker who subs frequently too and it goes much better for her just because she has this kind of toughness about her. Hey everyone I took my MTTC 103 today for the first time and did not pass. I won’t know my results until August 14 I think. I am very disappointed in myself because I took the time to study and I know I’m not a good test taker but that was nothing like the practice exam I took except half the questions and the other half I really don’t understand where they got them from. I got questions about number binary and whatnot and I never learned that when I was a kid or in college! I’m really frustrated I spent money on study dot com and that was not helpful. The study guide was also very different. I don’t know. What’s everyone’s advice? Currently I’m working as both an LPN doing home hospice and a CNA at a hospital but the only reason I’m holding on to the CNA job is so I have a guaranteed job in the hospital as an RN once I graduate. After a few weeks working as an LPN I’m actually liking it a lot more than being a CNA and I’m getting about $6 more/hour. I rather pick up hours as an LPN than a CNA where I’m committed to work 8 hours a week. I’m always burnt out after working a CNA shift. It’s so physically taxing compared to being an LPN. I’m just not thrilled doing CNA work anymore. Is it really worth holding onto the CNA job if the only objective is for job security in the hospital as an RN? To be honest when I become an RN, I don’t even think I’d want to stay at this hospital due its low pay. I know I can't be the only student nurse ever to do this, and I'm trying to get in the habit of keeping my hands clasped together or shut. I'm in the early days of my course, but I'm already pretty conscious on contamination from hospitality training (I.e touching hair, face etc-) and we've been going through infection prevention/control. I'm always instinctively clenching, rubbing and rolling my hands. Or touching my neck, shoulder in similar odd motions. Moving something all the time has been a habit since forever albeit I know is very annoying to people, and I need to try and keep movement contained to be wary of my body and surroundings. I've had it noted in the past by psychs offhandedly about it just being a (diagnosed) cptsd self-soothing thing of repetition. Or past conversations around a possibility of autism. Fellow EL Coordinators or EL teachers - how do your schools schedule your ELs? Our school has overhauled our EL scheduling and it’s a mess right now, two business days from teachers returning and a week and a half from kids returning. A little over a third of our large urban high school are active ELs, and we have around 50 students who have less than three school years in the country (high immigrant neighborhood). Most EL classes, both ESOL/ELD and EL-specific cores, are wide mixes from students with the highest language needs (WIDA 1.0, words and phrases) to almost exiting the program (4.6). As an EL-specific core teacher, this seems insane . Previously, they were leveled - I taught the mid-levels (high 2s to mid 4s) and another teacher taught the lower proficiency students (1s and 2s, mostly newcomers). I was an LPN was 10 years and just became an RN this pass May. I got a job as a cath Lab nurse since I love the heart. I knew it would be hard to learn and was ready for the challenge. I do 4 10s and love the pacing of it. My co-workers are are mostly travelers even my Preceptor is a traveler. Today I was pulled into the mangers office and was basically told that after 60 days I should be doing better then where I'm at and should be more independent by now (origination is 90 days) . I was blind sided by this and was basically told that my manger has heard not so nice things about me from my co-workers and a part of me thinks that because I don't really connect with them very much they just don't want me there. I got put on an action plan and in the next 6 weeks I have to be able to fly solo I think I can do it but I think even if I do there is just gonna be another reason to fire me and nothing I can really do will fix this. 10+ years experienced RN here… Quickly after starting at an outpatient rheumatology clinic I noticed the culture is to work through your lunch, take a short lunch, or even skip your lunch to keep the schedule running…I notice nurses also stay after work, handle a lot of admin stuff for future appointments, carry out “routine orders” with only a verbal communication, sometimes said orders are written out but not signed by an MD (I guess they eventually get around to it?), communication between shifts are also so unorganized that RNs write memos out on paper and just place them over the face sheet in the paper chart! This is meant to functions as a hand off report for you to base your eval and treatment?! They most concerning thing is that staff rushes like there’s no tomorrow. I have worked ICU and the way these people are rushing you’d think it was something really acute but they’re just trying to not fall behind schedule. context i work as a housekeeper in 3 different clinical offices. when i first started i had at LEAST 2 full big bags of trash at the end of the night to take to the dump. Now im having like one? 3/4th of one? and the trash in each exam room is just less, a pair of gloves here or a bed cover there. I havent even replaced a needle box in months. Two of the clinics also only see patients on certain days (like 2 times a week based on trash pickup) Is there a reason for the decline? I’m about three months into a new clinic job and the doctor I work for has a reputation for being a jerk. Recently he’s been asking me how long I will be staying and made a bet I quit at six months…. I usually just respond with I will just keep you guessing and laugh it off but today it hurt… we had a meeting with the rest of the team and in front of them he made several comments at my expense of being new and again brought up his bet of six months. I just kind of looked around and smiled and then left and cried in front of these other nurses not part of my team…. I’m not sure how to react anymore… I want it to stop but don’t want to confront him or escalate things. I really like my new job otherwise and want to make it work despite the stress of learning new things. I think this hurt more because it was in front of people outside of our team, everyone reassured me that he actually likes me and thinks he is being funny… but this is tiring… how do I respond? I have an interview next week for a new grad RN at a smaller hospital. I have to go to Europe (for 3 weeks) in December to see my grandmother whose health is declining, and they’re afraid she has 8-12 months to live. Do I let them know about my prior arrangements during the interview or if/when they offer me a job? I’m hoping that if I start in August it would give them a 4 months heads up. Since April I’ve been routinely checking Seattle, Highline, Tukwila, Renton, Kent, Federal Way, and Auburn. There’s nothing. Hello, I did my first interview with the recruiter last week. She then got me a second interview with the unit manager (Tuesday). I felt like everything went well. The manager told me that the recruiter will contact me to set a date for a shadow the unit. The recruiter called me the next day (yesterday). We set the date and that was it. This evening about 40 minutes ago, I got an email saying the position has been filled. I’m so confused. I don’t want to panic. Has this ever happened to you or anyone you know? I recently got into the world of oncology and actually like it! Started last year and looking to continue down that path until I graduate from grad school. Recently applied to a PT position for inpatient oncology at a hospital very close to me. I shadowed on the floor as part of my in person interview. It’s a 10 bed unit with a mixed population of Onc, gender affirmation and K pouch patients. Cool not a problem. I find out on the same day that I would also be cross training to their sister unit which is a “40” bed unit of surgical patients (it’s actually 48. Didn’t find out until 2 days into orientation). Basically med/surg. This past Monday, which was my first day of orientation I was told to meet at the sister unit for floor orientation. I’m thinking cool, leadership wants to go over some things before taking me to the floor I’m supposed to be on. That’s when I find out that I’ll actually be orienting on the sister unit. I was teaching 6th grade math but was dropped due to budget cuts (I’m in Florida). At least that was the official reason. I have had plenty of interviews including one at a new charter school opening up. I actually was asked to return for a second interview! I would prefer to be in the public school system over a charter school but right now I just want a job. It stinks that I and many are in this position due to budget cuts. We start orientation on the 10th, and the first day of school is the 24th. I’m going into level 2 of nursing school. I was looking forward to my career as a nurse but the more I read of how little people make makes me question things. For example, I am a service leader at chipotle making $21/hr. I have already been offered assistant gm position which can average around 50-60k. It wouldnt be long after that position that a Gm position would arise and those can range between 70-100k. Due to school I’ve turned down the promotion. My point is, what’s the point of working such a seemingly grueling and unrewarding job like nursing where people make just as much as chipotle management? A job I’ve come to be very good at and find easy? Hey all! Taking my hesi admission exam on saturday. The schools admission exam consists of Math, Reading, Vocab and A&P. I’ve spent quite a bit of time studying A&P, it was my weakest subject. This is followed by Math, but the only thing i struggle with there is fractions (i’m 10 years out from high school and i was a burnout back then) Will I be using fractions often enough in school/work to really justify relearning them? Decimals, Ratios, conversions, etc I’m rock solid with. I’m 38 and we decided we want to have a child. Which is worse in your opinion: pregnancy during last year of BSN vs. pregnancy in first year of new job? I anticipate my pregnancy will be rough because I’ll also be withdrawing from my regular medications that are contraindicated in conception/pregnancy. We’ve reached that time of year again! It’s almost time to get our rosters, where 15/30 students have 504s and IEPs, and nearly every accommodation has been selected for them. All 15 need to be near instruction, have frequent check ins, extended time, reduced workload to show mastery, the ability to leave the room upon request, and separate testing with a teacher or supervisor who doesn’t exist. You begin to realize quickly that it’s basically impossible to enforce consistent rules and procedures since a majority of students are an exception to whatever rules you’re trying to institute. We desperately need SPED reform. I dare any principal, case manager, counselor, or school executive to say that the current setup is realistic or doable. At our school, 504 accommodations are rarely even based on substantive data! I just started a new job in an outpatient clinic setting as a Clinic Nurse, and my badge says that but it’s tiny print. All staff have identical, bland ID badges whether they be an MA, phlebotomist, receptionist, manager, etc. I’ve noticed some MAs have their own badge buddies that say “Medical Assistant,” or MA, and some RNs have custom badge buddies saying RN or Registered Nurse. I’m only one year into nursing so I still am excited by the RN badge, so I feel a little egotistical by getting myself a plain RN badge buddy for my badge. I teach summer school and the students get lunch before they're sent home at noon. We were in the cafeteria and another teacher ran to me asking for help. One of her students (who was my student this past year) was kneeling on the floor. She was choking on a corn dog. I was able to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on her and she is ok. Was wondering just how common it was because I believed it to be uncommon at first. I believed I was one of few. Wondering what unit everyone worked because I wanted to go into a specialty in which I could learn and do more. However, have a very hard time managing now on what would be considered by majority as an easy floor. Therapy and medication just continue to remind me that there's something wrong with me. Like I just want so bad to put that episode behind me and forget about it, but end up just continually thinking about it. This all occurred six months ago lasting for about three to four months total before the medication started to help. Oh and also. Those of you on what you consider a stressful floor or unit. How do you manage? I know. I've heard experience, time and other similar things, but seriously how do you all manage? submitte
