I am a last second hire at a suburban school. I didn’t get to bring my stuff and I’m literally teaching on the fly. You’d think things couldn’t be worse but things have never been better. My high schoolers can read, apologize when redirected, don’t cuss at me, I haven’t heard the N word yet. It’s another world. I have to admit my nervous system was always on edge before. It still is. I look at these kids listening and I wonder what’s their plan? But they’re just sitting there doing their work and it freaks me out, but I love it. If you’re in a failing school my advice is please leave. I started working in home health a few months ago. I loved working with the elderly and listening to their stories. Today I was doing a visit with a patient who looked very sick when I first met her, she has been doing well over the last few weeks and today after my visit she is on her way out with her friend to have a girls day. I just adore older people that are still active and social. I wanna be like them when I grow up, I feel like that is beneficial to their health. I just started my new job (ICU) and I’m SO OVERWHELMED. My most recent hospital experience is Telemetry (8 months) and I tried applying to this hospital, just shooting my shot. I didn’t expect them to actually hire me! I only know Meditech and EPIC is legitimately kicking my butt. We only get 2 weeks (6 shifts) of orientation and I’m drowning . I feel like I need a week just to learn epic alone, let alone all the equipment and procedures and everything else. I need encouragement please, I feel so discouraged. I feel so embarrassed going to work everyday feeling like I don’t belong, being the dumbest one in the room, feeling like they hired me out of pity or something. Everyone has been so nice and kind though, I just don’t think I belong here with the big leagues. I just feel like shit because I ended up having to trade this patient with someone else. I went into his room to give him his meds and he was just *so* mean to me. Like verbally abusive. Calling me an imbecile, a bitch, screaming so loud a male colleague came in and tried to calm him down. I lost my twin brother very suddenly around six months ago and I don’t know if I’m just more sensitive now or what but I started crying while he was screaming at me. In the room. I had leave him with the coworker for a minute. Came back in, eyes puffy, and then he berated me more for leaving. It was like he was happy that he made me cry. I just read about an Alabama law that delays a student's ability to earn a driver's permit or license if they have been suspended from school for a certain number of days. There is a point system that defines how delayed a permit/license would be based on how many days of ISS/OSS. What do we think about this? Have there been any similar laws passed in other states? I've definitely heard of states enforcing school enrollment or attendance when a student wants to get their permit/license, but not discipline records. When nurses say people are sicker now do they mean there’s more people with acute on chronic conditions? More people with chronic illness period? So I've been teaching in the same rural highschool since I started teaching, which was 8 years ago. Since then, I've been the sole English teacher for 9th-12th grade and some years I even teach middle school ELAR. I genuinely hate change, and I've developed very strong relationships with my students over the years, seeing them grow from Freshmen to Seniors, and occasionally I'll get to teach a class all the way from 6th grade to graduation. I really love teaching at my school, and it has mostly always been English with the odd college prep class thrown in to fill my schedule from time to time. However, in a twist I could have never expected and amidst a few years of exceptional turn-over in our district, I have returned to in-service to find my teaching assignment has been changed from strictly 9th-12th English to an array of different classes. I'm retaining 11th and 12th English, but in place of 9th and 10th English, I am now teaching Spanish 1 & 2 and Fundamentals of Computer Science

It's more of a question than a rant, but if you explore the topic of schools on the internet you'll come across the claim that "modern schools are failing young men" and that "schools are not built for boys" and various versions of this claim. Oddly it never seems to be in the reverse, no one discusses how schools are failing girls. I teach in a school that is mostly boys (it's 65%+ of the student body any given year) so my situation tilts my perception, but I was talking with some retired teachers and they said they couldn't recall any big discussions, or thought pieces, or letters to the editor (remember those?) about how schools in the 90s and early 2000s were failing boys or were somehow systematically disadvantaged boys. So what's the deal? I didn't start teaching until the mid 2010s, so is this a result of NCLB? Is it a result of the push for standardized testing? Or is this a bigger societal shift and/or societal stress? But then again, why only boys? Wouldn't girls also be affe

This year when they have that annual 403b meeting, don't sign up with the company that gives the presentation (equitable, security benefit, etc). Go to your HR department and ask them which companies you can open one up with. If vanguard is an option, go with that one. I didn't realize that was an option until it was too late. I finally was able to move my money to vanguard this summer but the process was beyond difficult. They purposely make you jump through hoops so they can keep your money. They may as well ask you to give up your first born because the process is so ridiculous. Hi everyone, I’m currently quite concerned about a situation with a patient… The patient has diabetes, and we visit her three times a day to check her blood sugar and administer insulin. She’s actually supposed to be on ATS, but she refuses to take it. Three times a week, she also has her dressing changed on her left foot. She often has small wounds on her toes or in her nail beds. When I visited her yesterday evening, I did notice that the nail bed of her big toe was a little sore, but it appeared dry, so I decided not to apply a protective dressing Instead, I put her socks on, which weren’t taken off again until noon. Today, the actual dressing change took place, during which the nurse was horrified to discover that the toe was covered in maggots. Now I’m really worried and I’m also blaming myself a little. This is a venting session. Starting teaching is needlessly complicated and expensive. I'm going in on alternative certification route, so not even doing a full MAT program. This may vary based on the US state you are in, but so far before I've even gone to orientation , here are my costs and procedures to start as a teacher in Pennsylvania: COSTS All general praxis tests for K-8 and two subject based tests which must be completed before starting (Math and Science)- $400 FBI background check, health check, state criminal check, 2 different child abuse forms- -$200 , slightly higher as out of state Cancelled work days to attend last minute interview requests-- roughly $500 in lost work This is not covering the education costs for certification which will be out of pocket---around $10-12k because of Pennsylvania restricting access to only some certification programs. I got a job offer yesterday, I accepted and this morning they rescinded it because they spoke to "someone" from my former district who told them I was put on a "behavioral and professional improvement plan". It was my first year and all probationary teachers are put on an IDP. There was nothing behavioral about it. I was an exemplary employee. My EOY report was great! High scores, 100% student growth. It was NOT my principal. He told me to give them his number and have them call him to speak on my behalf. I am gutted. I worked very hard, I did what I was told, I gave from my time and money for my students. Parents were happy, the district hired me for summer school too. The only reason I resigned was I didn't want to do SpEd anymore (I have a dual degree and wanted to do GenEd) but there were no positions available in my school. I did provide all the paperwork to prove what I am saying. I didn't misrepresent myself in any way or claimed I was a perfect teacher in any way shape or form.

My school district has told us that if we are going to make and share an Amazon wish list that it has to be approved by them and then all items from it will become district property. My state requires 24 professional development hours annually. My district (large/urban) encourages its schools to just host back to school orientations for incoming middle school students and high school students (no clue what goes on in elementary). To entice participation, admin dangles PD hours to get teachers to show up for the day. This is really just a way to get free labor out of us in the name of professional development. I teach at a middle school, with teaming at each grade. A few times a year we have “spirit week “ with themed days. My team of teachers ( all females) will wear matching outfits on random days yet leave me out. I’ll walk into a meeting and be the only one not wearing, for example, a black top and beige pants. I don’t comment on their appearances and participate as needed. One member of my team hadn’t been a part of this “matching” day until near the end of the year. My first 4 years as a teacher were a hot mess. In Year 5, I switched from private schools to public school, and my life and work became so much easier; I finally felt like I was beginning to improve each year. I'm going into my 9th year of teaching, but because I had the lowest seniority in my department, I was displaced from my old school. At that school, I grew a lot and became a much better teacher. I had one instructional coach say that she looked forward to coming to my class because the kids were learning and there weren't any major behavioral issues. (Always gonna be 1 or 2 kids off task.) I’ve been looking for a new job since I resigned from my previous school last month and I applied to a district about an hour south of me in Washington (district is north of Vancouver). The jobs were for a kinder, 3rd, and 4th grade teachers at two elementary schools and I spent the last two years teaching 3rd and 4th grade. The jobs were posted 4 days ago so I figured I’d find out in a week or so whether I’d hear back from them. Well 7 hours later I check my email and find that they emailed me to let me know they were moving on with other candidates and closing my applications for those two spots. It’s demoralizing to apply nonstop to schools all within an hour of where I live and only see the emails stating that they’re going with other candidates without getting an interview. I am an 8th Grade Teacher is a small-ish town. My husband and I took our kids to a small mall in a neighboring town. The mall is pretty run down and has a reputation for being a dumping ground/babysitter for groups of unsupervised pre-teens, but it was early afternoon and we were back to school shopping. As we were driving into the parking lot, a group of five boys burst out a side door. They came close to the curb right as we were driving past, then one kid made eye contact with my husband and pretended to jump in front of his truck. My husband slammed on the brakes. I've worked cardiac stepdown for about ten years. We are a 13 bed unit with 4 RNs and 1 tech. 3:1 ratio and one poor nurse gets 4. We used to have two techs but after COVID they took one away. It seems all I do all day is tech work. I am bouncing from call light to call light. Most of the call lights aren't mine. Most of it is toileting. The thing is I'm getting dinged on my charting and timely med passes. Being charge all the time is not helping. I even got bitched out for not checking my email frequently. I like stepdown. I know I don't want ICU. I was an ICU nurse during COVID and that confirmed it. I have one coworker who I miss dearly who wants me to join her in a community ER. She says it's mostly minor stuff and way less grunt work. I’m 16 going on 17 and as I enter into my junior year of high school, I’m really starting to look into my future after high school. New grad that is about to hit 9 months on a Med Surg unit with very high acuity. I have the same tale as a lot of people who get into Med Surg work. 6 patients, shitty management, high acuity etc... I got into nursing because I've always been into wellness, and at 28 years old I was desperate for some financial stability. I don't think the work I do on a Med Surg unit is "super sciency" or cool. Most of the patients I deal with are rude and ungrateful. The pay is on the lower end for my area (I'm in the Florida Panhandle so as you can imagine I'm not making much). All of these things, truthfully, have made me start to feel a little bit depressed. I get through my shifts, and my manager says I'm doing a good job at our meetings every three months, but I've never dreaded going to work as much as I dread going to my Med Surg job. Just wanted to rant and vent my frustrations, but our hospital was only built a few years ago. It looked really nice at the time. They probably spent buckoos of money to have it made... here's the thing. Whoever created it did a terrible job. Everything is falling apart. Water leaks everywhere, behind the walls, into the floors, etc, water ends up not working anymore, drink machines don’t work anymore, AC going out multiple times a year... Well, our AC went out on our adolescent unit recently. Last time this happened on the adult unit it took a WEEK for them to fix the AC. I remember it wasn't as bad then because it wasn't as hot. This year though, it is well over 100 degrees outside, but it felt like it was over 115 not long ago near where we are located. I went to work that night with a long sleeve because they didn't text us telling us it was out. (Shocker, I know). Hi! I work home health. I've been a home health nurse for 2 years, and I actually work on nephrostomy dressing changes weekly. Not new for me. Last week I did a nephrostomy dressing change. This patient was no exception, except on that last piece of tape I removed, she jerked forward. Of course the tape was slightly stuck, but with the help of saline, alcohol pads and gauze we got it undone. She said "ow!" Jerked forward, and I apologized to her. We also saw she has a scab she had around the nephrostomy tube that was beginning to wrap around. I recommended not attempt to remove at this time as she stated pain. We assessed, sutures still intact, no drainage, no bleeding, and flushed with no resistance. Patient reported no pain after, and stated this is kind of a norm for her. Today, I get a call from supervisor saying the patient filed a complaint I accidentally pulled it out COMPLETELY. I don't understand how that was even possible?! But it has me feeling terrible.
