The latest budget news has come out for my district, and it's all doom and gloom. Budgets will be cut. Positions will be cut, and it's likely going to be art and music. I teach art and I actually like my job a lot. I truly do. The kids at my school are wonderful and most of them really enjoy my class. I keep trying to pretend I'm ok, but I'm really worried. This was a while ago at the end of my first full year of teaching. At the end of the year we had a promotion ceremony for our 8th graders who were moving on to high school. Before the ceremony all of us teachers were minding the hallways of the venue and helping direct students. One of my bright but somewhat disruptive students walked up to me with his parents. "Mom, Dad, this is Mr. Real_Accident. He's the one who told me I needed to get my head out of my ass." I froze, fully panicking. I was convinced I was going to get in some sort of trouble. Every year, the school does "teacher of the year" and it always goes to the teacher who sacrificed the most. This year it was a teacher who worked from 7am to 8pm every day (admin said "an example of true dedication"), birthday cupcake for every student, had a classroom pizza party monthly and responded to parents requests/complaints 24/7. I am a first year teacher in California try to get a job as a middle school core ELA/Social Studies teacher as I have a background in sociology and English as I have my multiple subject masters and credential. Looking for advice on how to stay sane while teaching using a DAILY station rotation model. At my previous school, they wanted to see me teach 2-3 different groups at different times while also being aware of what students were doing in the group i wasnt teaching. (Literally they questioned why I didnt check on a student who wasnt writing in group 2 although they wanted to see me focus on group 1). My new coach at my new school says the station model doesnt have to look like this EVERY day but wants to see it sometimes. She also said I can start with tier 1 instruction then have different groups working on the same activity at once. She states the way I do stations should change based on data and whatnot. It is all so confusing. My brain loves structure. It doesnt like to change the model/agenda i use for the day. I like consistency but it seems like thats not what schools want now in my district. Tonight was our school's school production. I run the drama club every year and have done so for 9 years. The only proviso I was pretty much given for doing a school production every year after the first was the school would not give any money towards the production, nor would the PTA be able to give money at that time, it has to pay for itself and the next one going forwards. Over the years we have grown the pot incrementally by putting on great shows that are not big names, we never do Broadway Jnr or Disney Jnr shows, and being creative with props and costumes etc. I am very proud of this, we continue to be an all welcome drama club for pupils from the age of 7 - 11 no matter whether SEND, PP, EAL or any other characteristic or not and that we have money in our bank account to keep it going, and that it is slowly growing. Went in to check my email today to celebrate my school switch-over on Outlook & saw 2 emails, 1 from each principal. The first was a "Summer Update #1" with a welcome to new staff, info for what to expect in the coming weeks, and expectations for the workdays this coming year with some other helpful things added in. I was geeking out over knowing exactly which workdays were protected, when open house would be, best methods of communication and how clearly written out the information was so much that I forgot that this is like... normal? Keeping your staff informed should be standard? Disclaimer: this is more so for a teacher in the first 2-3 years at a new school or when a teacher is assigned a new class I work like a dog in the summer, but it looks less like working as a teacher and more like working a desk job. I spend the entire summer creating curriculum, building Canvas quizzes, adjusting tests, etc. I find that this helps me SO MUCH during the school year and, because of that, I hardly ever take work home. Our new principal told us (interview committee for a 3rd grade) that she wants to hire fresh out of college teachers who are moldable. 3 experienced teachers were passed up for a first year teacher who just threw in student teaching lingo (nothing wrong with that, but these experienced teachers spoke about real teaching strategies, not just “1 2 3 eyes on me”). I work as a 6th grade ELA teacher. I have noticed over the past few years that a lot of kids in SPED don't really make any progress. Maybe I'm not seeing it, but a lot of kids make progress through SPED. Then, when they come to middle school, a lot of that progress stops or slows considerably. There's no longer pull out time. They no longer get one on one time with paras and SPED teachers. I also think the goals are less easy to accomplish. Elementary school is trying to teach basic skills like reading, writing, math, and some social studies and science if we can. Middle school is about learning and responsibility. It's not as simple to just pull a kid out and help them with reading comprehension. The kid has to remember to do their homework. A lot of kids in general don't do their homework, and this is doubly so for SPED kids. I can only imagine how things go in high school. A student was emotionally dysregulated all day and had been showing a consistent pattern for months with my heavy documentation. This week, he kept exploding with pushing and yelling, then finally went to kick a student and shove his head because they were arguing over a rhinestone. I called for help as I separated them and the staff member that pulled him out began to hit her violently and bite. I have another student with a medical condition. I (19F) started tutoring a kid in the beginning of this week and she has been consistently late. she's usually 30-40 minutes late despite me stressing that she needs to come on time. Hi everyone! I received a non-renewal at the beginning of May (that’s a whole other story on its own) and I’m not looking at the possibility of an offer to teach the subject I love in a new city. But I’m feeling hesitant for a few reasons: I love the city I’m in and I can’t imagine leaving. I love the demographic of students I serve and I feel like I’m fulfilling my purpose. Financially, I can’t afford to move to a new city. I currently live with my grandmother rent free because I put most of my income towards my student loans. Did 5 years in the Navy, met my wife had 2 kids, and finished my bachelors in IT, and masters in Cyber. Spent around 5 months searching for entry level IT positions and it just never happened. I need advice on new-classroom set up. For context: this classroom had a long term sub last year who didn't decorate much because they knew they were not staying. It is a special education classroom with kids from 2nd to 6th grade in a state where things like Amazon can take a week or more to arrive. The classroom is massive and has been left wonderfully clean with desks, tables, chairs, and one teacher desk. My questions for experienced teachers/Para's: - Are themes still a thing? I want to do a plant/garden theme but not "Pinterest". But I'm not sure if that's appropriate for 5th/6th grade students these days. -I deeply want my Paras to have their own desk space (I am bringing my own desk in so there will be an extra in the room). I teach 7th grade math in a large Title I school. Our demographics skew below the poverty line and I end up buying a lot of supplies for my classes. I really don't mind for the most part, but it's really disheartening when the supplies are destroyed, disregarded or otherwise wasted. After seeing how many pencils the custodian swept up each day on my hall alone I decided to demonstrate the scope of the issue to my classes. I challenged them to pick up any pencil on campus that was usable and discarded. 6 classes of 22-30 students each managed to pick up over 700 pencils during the second 9 weeks. I had them sharpen, add a cap eraser if needed and toss them in an old Takis box at the front of the class. I teach middle school math. I’ve given up on pencil management, and it’s a wonderful feeling. If students need pencils, I have plenty. I go over my expectations at the beginning of the year. Basically, help yourself to a pencil if you need one, take it with you if you want to. If you don’t want it, put it back or leave it in the supply box at your table. I just ask that students don’t break them and throw them away, which happens sometimes. All of this was working fine because I could buy a pack of 1000 from Amazon and they were pre sharpened, good quality. The last pack I bought was different! By the end of a work week, I'm mentally and emotionally exhausted. I don't want to spend a Friday night partying, and on Saturdays I spend solo to recharge. Sundays are spent mentally preparing for the week. I love teaching, but by the end of the week, I have no energy to expand on big social events, and almost everyone I do know already has a huge social network, and if they do want to do something, it's usually some place loud and crowded like a bar. Like, I don't want to be anti-social, but large group gatherings, even if it's fun, just leave me feeling drained afterwards. Teaching is insufferable in today’s world. Everything in teaching is draining. The meetings, reviews, grading, counseling, communicating, teaching, solving problems, putting out fires… everything. It is a thankless job. After the most recent changes to the student loan forgiveness program, me wanting to get my master’s, and the reality that the only pay increase that comes with teaching is through additional education, my pursuit of more education is now all sorts of more complicated and expensive. My undergrad alone was $60k. I feel like this decision signals the future of teaching and education, and this action was another attack on education, whether to push more AI and technology into classrooms and further remove the student from the teacher. I’ve now had this happen to me a number of times and it bothers me to no end. I get hired at the beginning of the summer to teach in one or both of my subject areas. I then ask politely: What classes will I be teaching in the fall? I would like to start planning over the summer. I’m told they will tell me when they know. And then I wait to hear what grade level(s) I’ll be working with or if I will have multiple preps. After a month, I politely ask for any updates. One principal waited until the day before school started to hand me a schedule with 4 preps. Others have waited until less than a week before the opening bell. As a detailed planner, this literally puts me a month behind and stresses me beyond measure. I’ve worked on the admin side and can’t imagine what is happening in the office that would make it difficult to share at least one of my preps with me, let alone multiple. Hi all, happy summer! I know July just started, but I can’t help but brainstorm new ideas for how I want to run my classroom next year. This will be my third year teaching 9th grade U.S. History. A consistent struggle has been participation — when I take volunteers to ask/answer questions, it is predictably the same handful of kids in each class that do all the thinking. When I “randomly” call on kids, no one is prepared to answer and there’s no accountability for listening and learning. I’ve thought back to some of my own classes where I felt I learned the most. Many of those teachers used popsicle sticks (or as I’ve seen them called recently, “equity sticks”) to randomly select students. As someone who grew up with a lot of social anxiety, this system did admittedly scare the shit out of me. But I think it was ultimately successful in getting me to pay attention. I had to have surgery at the start of the summer and if my dad wasn’t helping pay the $3,500 I have to pay out of pocket, I wouldn’t have enough money to pay for rent in August. Hi all! I'm transitioning from another career and I'm getting a bit worried about finding a job for next year. I've been doing an alternate route graduate certificate course while I substituted all of last school year, passed my state tests for secondary English and Social Studies in May, and have been applying since March-April, but most heavily since passing my tests. I was able to get my Interim Certificate issued as of today. I had one interview with a school that I subbed for a lot, and one of the admin seemed REALLY interested in hiring me and was regularly asking me for updates on my certification process as I took my tests. I accepted a .7 position at a school a few weeks ago, and signed my contract last week. I never really intended to work there because it’s a 40 minute commute solely on backroads and I want a 1.0 position. Just now I got the call offering me a job 20 minutes away and 1.0 (yay!). I feel bad/guilty backing out on the first job. In the contract I signed it stated that employment was contingent on fingerprinting (which I haven’t done) and certs (which I never sent in) and that resignations are expected 60 WORK days prior ( technically as I write this it is 60 regular days prior to the school year starting) Just looking to hear if anyone has done this / any advice. After the school year finished a child informed me that there was so much bullying that occurred right in front of the teacher - in code language that only the kids understood. It appears a particular class could develop their own codified terms and use them in different ways. So I just have a general question, when did small groups start happening? Growing up in the 80s/90s I can't remember ever having small groups in the classroom. Everything was whole group instruction style. Now small groups are stressed heavily, whole group is frowned upon. Was it the lack of funding? Or was my school the odd ball? Like if students were lower tier, they were pulled out for specialized help.... But there's never any pull out and that specialized help occurs inside the classroom....either before or after grade level material that goes above their heads because they are so significantly low. Hello! I got a call from a school to interview for a temporary teaching position. This was around 9am on Monday and I attempted to call back around 12-1pm to say that I am interested in attending. My calls weren’t being answered through any of their extensions (press 1 for blank, press 2 for attendance, so on and so forth). I ended up finding the person’s extension number through their website and tried that and it took me straight to voicemail. I left two voicemails and did not received a call back. The next morning (tuesday), I attempted emailing them to reserve a time slot. I didn’t receive any response through phone call or email. I have 11 years of experience in the classroom, and typically I have at least 2 kids to tutor in the summer to make extra money. I really need it with my current situation since I start my new job at a new district in August, but I won't get paid again until the end of that month. I need the extra income. My student success rate is very high, and I'm more than qualified for any EC-6 tutoring job. No one seems to want a tutor, or at least doesn't want to pay for one. PSA for prospective teachers: you can't really teach anywhere you want. Good districts are very difficult to get into unless you have a sought after credential like special education, math, or physics. By the time you get into your desired district, you will not be able to leave. Most school districts only recognize around 5-8 years of external service that they will count towards their salary schedule placement, if you're lucky. I retired from teaching after 22 years. It wasn’t the kids. The administration micromanaging our every move and treating us like toddlers. Being bullied and harassed by a coworker and administration doing nothing. I knew I was done when I got so stressed out after being scolded by my principal for something that was not even factual. I got a migraine and started throwing up in the garbage can. I was a very good ans hardworking special education teacher who the kids and parents loved and this is how I ended my career. I would come home from work and go right to bed for the night. It was bad. So I found a new job at a local agency , still in my field, gave up my summer off and took a $7,000 a year pay cut. The horrible elementary school I work at just became an official IB school. I honestly didn't expect that to happen for many reasons but now I think IB is just a BS label. Maybe it's harder for middle schools or high schools to become IB. submitted by /u/iam_adumbass [link] [comments]
