Is teaching supposed to be this disorganized?

I am someone who likes organization. I like when things are clean and clear. Obviously, many aspects of life are out of our control, so we must be adaptable to the circumstances we are given. I understand this, so I adapt and try to make the best of the situation I am in. Now, to the reason for this post: Is teaching supposed to be this disorganized? The school I work at is a mess. I cannot overstate enough just how disorganized everything is. I am begrudgingly beginning my second year, and the signs of disorder are already apparent. I was not given access to class materials until two days before students arrived for one of my classes (let's call this Course A). For my other class (Course B), which I found out I was teaching by happenstance, I was not officially told I would be teaching until two days before the students arrived as well. For this second class, I still do not have access to any of the course materials. Nothing at all. I had a similar experience for the entirety of last

Want to try to opt my kid out of iready but don’t want to be that parent

My daughter’s going to a new school where the district uses iready. Looks like 30 minutes a day. She’s on level and I really want to opt her out. I’m a teacher and my friends that teach elementary have told me how much it sucks. I’m also wary of the lawsuit and data use. But I also don’t want to be that parent because I know it’s often out of the teachers hands. If you teach in Ccsd in Vegas let me know if it’s possible. submitted by /u/binxbox [link] [comments]

Can we just unalive the district convocation?

Nothing says “we appreciate teachers” quite like forcing hundreds of them into a cramped auditorium to listen to administrators talk about how excited THEY are for the new school year. Convocation always seems to involve administrators introducing other administrators, celebrating district initiatives, and giving speeches about how important teachers are while teachers sit quietly in the audience mapping their exit plan and trying to put together to do lists. If the goal were actually to appreciate teachers, giving them those 2-3 hours to work in their classrooms would probably mean a lot more. At some point, you have to wonder whether convocation is really a celebration for teachers or just an annual pep rally for central office. Maybe the best way to “honor educators” is to give them back their time or make it more of a local school celebration. submitted by /u/flatteringhippo [link] [comments]

Several of my preschoolers will be starting kindergarten in 2 weeks and they still aren’t potty trained.

So I work as a part time daycare floater. While I could be full time I prefer the flexible hours so I can be with my daughter (20 months) more. There are several children in pre school class that are in diapers or pull ups. As a floater it normal falls to me to change them and while I really don’t mind it’s crazy that these kids are capable of having full blown conversations while I’m changing them like a baby. Here’s the crazier part. They start kindergarten in 2 weeks. We are sending 5 kids to kindergarten in pull ups which at this point they are just treating like a diaper. I don’t even know what to do. These kids are more than capable of using the potty. None of them are neurodivergent. But according to the lead teacher it’s basically learned helplessness. They know mom is going to change them. So they just don’t care. And when you talk to their parents it’s always the same thing “oh we’ve tried everything”. Which is obviously a lie. Specially when I’m in a mommy group with some of

bedside shift report etiquette ?

hi so i just want to go on a bit of a rant and i’d like to hear everyone’s thoughts and opinions on the matter for context, im a new grad working night shift on somewhat of a stepdown/medsurg combination unit in the hospital. my first annoyance is that there are a handful of nurses on day shift that are hell bent on doing shift report at the literal bedside. which i totally understand the importance of including the patient in the conversation and allowing them to hear what is being passed on between shifts, i see the benefits of doing report in the patients room, HOWEVER, my shift ends at 0600, and most of the patients are asleep at that time, so i don’t love when specific nurses demand going into the room, turning on a light, and having a whole ass conversation about the patient in front of them at the ripe hour of 6am. it feels inconsiderate? my second gripe is that i have had MULTIPLE instances giving day shift nurses report at the bedside where they notice something that may be ou

Anyone else have school mandated AI-Slop lessons?

Just to clarify they are not mandated but heavily emphasized and pushed on us at my school. We use this AI program which supposedly links to all this data and student performance records to "craft lesson plans that meet our needs." I personally think they are terrible (and maybe an abuse of student data); on one of the slop lessons it was like 30-40 pages long. On another, it spent like 5 pages to simply say circulate throughout the room and check in with learners to make sure they are on task. I mean my lesson plans are like two pages long max. Who in their right mind is reading 30-40 pages to describe a lesson. Several teachers, myself included, don't use them and refuse to but they are really pushy about AI Slop Lessons and talk about how much time they save and how we could use this time to focus on other areas. I've been firm in my stance about AI with admin that I think it is a cool tool but we need a teacher's touch still when crafting lessons in my classes. Has anyone else had

Patient using AI in the hospital bed to “do my own research”

God, these people who come to a major medical center for care, get treated for a challenging condition by a host of specialists, and then when medically ready for discharge, dispute EVERY conversation with the team by using fucking Chat GPT make me 🤯 Doc at the bedside summarizing the patient’s condition, going over every part of the treatment plan, step by step, patiently and with verbiage that a non-medical person (the patient) can understand. Patient holds his hand up and states: “OK, but I’m going to do my own research” types into Chat in front of the doc then basically dismisses them 😩 submitted by /u/Queen_Of_The_Dames [link] [comments]

After social media outcry, UNC hospital walks back nurse bidding system. A win for nurses

Following my last post about UNC Hospitals announcing a new staffing system where critical staffing shifts could be awarded based on the lowest bid , nurses spoke up and the reaction on social media was strong. UNC Hospitals leadership has now released a statement acknowledging the concerns and apologizing for the original communication. In the statement, leadership clarified that although the platform has a bidding feature, the bidding function will NOT be used at UNC Hospitals. They stated that nurses should not be competing against one another for shifts and that this does not reflect the collaborative culture they want to support. They also said the platform will instead be used to identify staffing needs earlier, provide more transparency around premium shift opportunities, reduce administrative burden, and help ensure adequate staffing for safe patient care. submitted by /u/Strikelight72 [link] [comments]

the above pay scale is Massachusetts general hospital (mgh) i don’t work there but did obtain the scale above I work at: Mount Auburn hospital It falls under the beth Israel lahey umbrellla and I’m writing about it in order to compare it to the best paid hospital in the city I’m perhaps more towards the bottom.. Mount Auburn is in Cambridge MA and they are like this: they do not give the chart with each yr of experience and the pay associated with it. It’s a small community non-union hospital as expected. The pay is not top-tier. I have about 10 years of experience and get just over 60 an hour. I would consider this non-competitive, especially given the benefits are not good. Either an MGH nurse with like three years less experience will make that amount and have way better also only get a yearly 2% raise health insurance is so so tuition reimbursement is 35 per year for holidays. Burnout/guilt

I can’t believe I’m coming on here to bring this up, but I need more perspective. I’ve been a RN for 2 years in the ED. In those two years the longest stretch I’ve had off was a week and a half which was while I was switching jobs coming closer to home. I work 4-5 12 hours shift 2-3 days and 2 nights. I have unfortunately hit my breaking point- I love my patients I love caring but today I broke down at work and realized I’m not even taking care of myself. I have my wedding and 3 weeks and I was unable to even get vacation for it I had to switch my shifts to work longer stretches instead. I have 4 days off including the day I sleep after nights to rest, get my life together, plan the wedding, do chores, try and see my family and care for my grandparents and friends. Over the past few months the stress of getting everything done and still taking care of myself has been getting much more difficult if not impossible. I miss my past students.

Does anyone else feel this way at the beginning of the school year? I’m feeling it a lot this time. My last couple classes (third grade teacher here) have been great and I’ve been very lucky I think. But this year’s group is just downright mean. I have a girl who’s extremely rude, telling me my makeup sucks or that i smell (???). I’ve of course brought it up to parents and admin and the attitude has died down, but of course the teacher student relationship is basically crap. And it’s the same with the rest of the class except for one or two who happen to be younger siblings of past students. They get their work done and aren’t overly disruptive, but they’re just MEAN and it’s difficult to enjoy being at work. Only month one and I’m waiting on the next rotation of kids in 2027. submitted by /u/dysfunctional_salad [link] [comments]

It took them one week to break my replacement

If a school has had 10 History Teachers in 12 years and each one is a nasty ending maybe it’s not the teachers. And if every teacher who leaves then loves their next school, what does that say? I had the year from hell last year and I was always like, why is this school sabotaging me? I left but that meant my friend had to step into my old role and one week of dealing with admins bs has her looking for other schools or leaving teaching altogether. I’m happy I’m out of there. But how is one leadership team allowed to run havoc on a community for so long and fail for so many years? For context, for three straight years they’ve recruited high performing teachers who’ve placed in the top 20% and each time they’ve fallen to the bottom of the city once in that school. Those same teachers then leave and go back to succeeding at other campuses. It drives me up the wall that they get to keep doing this, have terrible school conditions, sabotage employees, fail the students, and everyone pays a

New grad feeling stupid

I graduated last year, but I had knee surgery shortly after, so I ended up having about a 9 month break after graduating. My senior practicum was also in a low acuity unit, and I just got a job on an acute medicine unit. I’m only 3 days into orientation, and it feels SO different from any of my clinical experiences. Honestly, I feel absolutely stupid sometimes. I think the 9 month break has made it even harder because I feel like I’ve forgotten so much. I’m scared all the time. Every time there’s a skill I’ve never done before, I instantly panic. I’m so afraid of doing something wrong. I know I’m capable of doing the skills, and I usually can do them, but I constantly feel like I’m missing something or doing something incorrectly. I stop and triple check everything I’m doing because I’m so scared of making a mistake. I just don’t know when everything is going to start coming together and feeling more natural. Right now, I’m honestly dreading every shift, and I’m especially anxious abou

Mailing it in this year

Our leadership is awful, our community does not care about education, yet because our school has a putrid reputation I remain stuck here for one more year. Interviewing for admin roles was fruitless yet again for the third straight year, and it seems I have a better chance of winning the lottery than seeing a social studies opening in my part of the country. Don't get me wrong, I will still do what I can for my students in the classroom, I care about my kids. I just don't care about administrator initiatives, bogus PD, and the moronic insistance that having purpose statements will somehow create engagement. This is the first year in my career where I am dreading returning. It's not the kids, it's all the adults that are nightmares to work with. I finally became a nurse after years of working toward it… now I feel weirdly empty and don’t know what to do with my life

I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this after graduating/reaching a huge life goal. For the past few years, my life was basically nursing school, clinicals, studying, graduating, and then studying for the NCLEX. Literally 3 weeks ago I was stressed out studying for my NCLEX, and now I’ve passed, I’m officially an RN, and I’m about to start my first nursing job. I thought I would feel AMAZING once I finally got here. And I am proud of myself, but instead I’ve been feeling weirdly empty, bored, emotional, and super nostalgic. It feels like my life went from constantly having something I needed to accomplish to suddenly… nothing. 😭 My friends are still in my life, but everyone is busy with work/school/their own lives, so I have a lot of time alone right now. I haven’t started my new job yet either, so I’m basically in this awkward transition period. Med Surg Nurse going into ICU: Advice + What to expect?

Im a nurse with just over a year of experience going into the ICU, I always felt like the shifts I enjoyed the most were the ones where I had to deal with patients who needed more attention because they weren’t doing well or had significant changes to their status. I enjoyed being able to step out of that task-oriented mindset to deducing whether my patient could be decompensating, so I decided to try for an ICU position and was thankfully accepted. It will be for an ICU covering cardiac patients. As such, I am wondering what I should expect as I transition to a new role? Like, I am wondering how the workflow would be different, whether the learning curve is just as bad as going from new grad nurse to an experienced nurse, etc. I feel like being on med-surg has helped me anticipate interruptions to my workflow and how to budget my time effectively, but I do admit that I lean more towards task completion. I came from a medical floor that didn’t have any particular specialty (e.g., cardi

Terminated

Not a nurse, but a CNA working towards a nursing degree. I worked a specific type of shift at my hospital a month ago. I will say, I had built a very good reputation for myself across the hospital (700+ bed hospital). The shift that I was working entailed covering breaks for 1:1 sitters, helping floors that were short staffed, basically helping wherever possible. I always offered to help and did way more than was expected of me. I was looking up the patients that I was going to be sitting with throughout my shift and was reported by a nurse that I didn’t even know. She stated I was looking at charts that I had no reason to access, which was not true. I also helped out in the ED by printing stickers for patients, getting the visit number for tele, vitals, finding out diet orders, etc. Since I had been reported, they pulled my Epic access reports and it looked “suspicious” to compliance because I opened charts in multiple different departments. My management explained the role of that sp

Today's peeve

Ok, not today's peeve, but last week's peeve. My hospital does not allow RNs to do anything about our patients' toenails. Not file, not clip, doesn't matter if you're wound care, diabetic educator, no toenails. Only providers are allowed to do anything with toenails. I had a patient week before last, whose toenails had grown TWO INCHES (that's five centimetres) beyond the ends of their toes. And of course, this wasn't straight out the end of the toe, they were deformed to the side where they were scraping the other toes. And I wasn't allowed, by hospital policy, to do a damn thing about it. All I could do was notify the provider about the situation, and that hospital policy restricted me from addressing it. And the hospitalists refer the patients to outpatient podiatry, who have a 3 month wait time around here. It's infuriating. submitted by /u/Gwywnnydd [link] [comments]

Being a new nurse is so unrelentingly humbling.

This job rips. I worked hard to get here and I’m so grateful to be where I am. I get mangled so frequently it’s insane, and my inexperience hangs out and it feels like I’ve ripped my pants in front of every childhood crush I’ve ever had. I’m surrounded be people who I value and admire. They teach me and I try to retain; I do retain; then I lose some in time like condensation on a cold glass of water. Insensible fluid loss. Knowledge and stimulus overload. Yesterday I encountered an instance with a patient where my inexperience felt so glaring that I asked myself “what’s the fuck am I doing here?” In the end, I got through and as far as I know my patient remained stable until transfer to higher level of care. Now I’m putting my scrubs back on. Trying to dust yesterday off my shoulders. Trying to be a clear slate. I’m probably going to get challenged again tonight. I repeat the faint consolation that it couldn’t be harder than last night. A whistle in the dark because I know it’s just a

Aspiring Teachers: don’t overlook CTE!

If you’re struggling to find a teaching job after college, don’t overlook CTE I keep seeing posts from new teachers who graduated, got licensed, and are now struggling to find a position in their subject area. I wanted to throw out an alternative that I honestly didn’t know much about until I got into it myself: CTE (Career and Technical Education). CTE classes are the career-focused courses offered in middle and high schools. Depending on the school, that can include culinary arts, automotive, construction, agriculture, health sciences, business, marketing, computer science, engineering, media, cosmetology, hospitality, and a ton of other pathways. I teach Culinary Arts at a public high school in Hawaii. I switched to teaching after 15 years in the culinary industry. I was able to get hired without a degree based on my experience. Using Gen AI to make children "look diverse"

I'm baffled. It took me an entire day to comprehend this. Yesterday we had an actually useful training about behaviors (although we didn't have enough time to cover challenging behaviors... augh) and we were discussing diversity being displayed in photographs and materials we use. Specifically one method of taking real pictures of your classroom for your daily schedule. This trainer specifically noticed one picture of snack time was all white children and teachers sitting down for snack time in one of the classrooms she worked in. She decided to, and I quote use Gen AI "to make the children look more diverse" I audibly gagged at that ngl. You put children's faces into a computer to make them diverse? What the actual fuck... I don't care if the picture was like 20 years old, take a new one or get shutter shock images for your daily schedule. Or, make the displays and take pictures without children in it? Like... 😭 I have no hope. submitted by /u/SnooWaffles413 [link] [comments]

IEP/504 Overload

Getting ready for new year, and the new IEP/504 documents are being funneled out. Teaching 6th Grade and the from-Elementary plans are atrocious…. 50% of the kids on plans in an area where the demographics would indicate that it would be significantly less than national average. (Wealthy, rural, primarily traditional homes) The plans themselves are ridiculous. Have elementary admin surrendered to being treated like daycare centers? From above, it seems like they’re making significant academic concessions for any parent who asks. If we are going to harp on literacy rates, I’d like a look at the rates that exclude data from students that are exempted from any level of academic challenge/rigor. It’s disheartening. 10 students on plans, 50 minutes, no para or coteacher. Feels like a recipe for me to be accused of being out of compliance. submitted by /u/BiteThese8993 [link] [comments]

Crotchety old vets, what wisdom do you have to share with the excited new teachers?

So many of you saw my post about being the cranky old hag in my PD. What is the best advice you can impart to teachers going into their first few years of teaching. Get out now is not an acceptable response, although I do tell anyone who is thinking about going into education that it's no longer a path to the middle class, at least in the south. submitted by /u/moonman_incoming [link] [comments]

What's the most profound thing you've learned being a teacher?

Title is my question. I've learned that successful teachers are typically unliked among kids ironically. "Uggg, I hate that class!" Yet the teacher has climbed the pay scale and the kids learn a lot in it. Kids want freedom, but need boundaries. I sometimes wonder if they'll be happy with freedom inside of those boundaries. submitted by /u/JimCap5 [link] [comments]

When should I tell my families about my pregnancy?

Hi everyone. I’m 11 weeks pregnant and starting school on Monday. Admin already knows but I’m scared to tell families. Last year I left on maternity leave in October and here I am pregnant again! It was planned and my husband and I are very happy. In my school, we teach two grade levels in a classroom. I teach 4th and 5th. My 4th graders cycle through to 5th grade with me. Therefore, I keep half my group for two years. Can you see the potential issue here? My now 5th graders will have had a teacher on leave 2 years in a row and I’m terrified that the parents will freak out. Last year, parents were trying to pull their kids out of my class because they were so scared of an interim sub. This year, I’m due 2/25/27, which means I have 7 months to teach critical material and when I leave, it’ll basically be testing season and they’ll just be refining their skills. How long would you wait if you were in my position. submitted by /u/GravelandSmoke [link] [comments]

More planning periods needed

This job is bullshit. Why is it they want all this data tracking, want you to move the heavens, but don't give you enough planning to even f_cking look at the data? Why do teachers not have more planning periods for all of this stuff? submitted by /u/CartoonistCrafty950 [link] [comments]

Copies

I work at a school where teachers aren’t allowed to use the copy machine. We have to fill out a form and give it to a designated person before a certain time to receive it for the next day. We are told to plan ahead. Does anyone else have this rule at their school? submitted by /u/ERCRTCMAMA [link] [comments]

Patients families are worse than patients

Is it just me or are people kinda... entitled? And ungrateful? Stupid? I know I would feel grateful if someone was caring for my parent, child, or loved one and relieving me of the responsibility. (Coming from a special needs mom). In other times or countries, the responsibility falls on the family to take care of their sick/disabled ones. I wonder if that ever occurs to some people...? Like if they dont like how we are, they could take them home and do it themselves? Or they could have to be doing it themselves and wow its kinda cool they dont have to? We empathize with them, they dont seem to empathize with us. That shit gets old. Unpopular opinion- I know youre feeling guilt/anxiety/sadness/anger, but stop projecting that onto me and get your shit together... and maybe try being grateful and appreciative that you have the help many others dont have. submitted by /u/Desperate_Box_7442 [link] [comments]
