Irritating things about working in healthcare

Does anybody else have friends/relatives who think it’s okay to just send them/show them vulgar things just because you work in healthcare? For example, one of my really good friends will just send me pictures of her stool or snot and think it’s okay because I’m exposed to it constantly as a nurse, but it’s truly different when it’s your own friend. And maybe it’s because I encourage her to go to the doctor and get labs checked and educate her, as well as tell her about how my days at work go sometimes but truly wtf? Like I feel it’s disrespectful and I’m curious if anyone else experiences that from loved ones? The other day my 2 friends were talking about snot and my one friend talked about how she doesn’t wanna hear/talk about it, and when the other friend asked why, friend #1 responded like “because I’m not a nurse” while in my presence. And I spoke up like, um just because I’m a nurse doesn’t mean that I want to necessarily deal with it neither? But I do it because it’s apart of my

Students can't do pen-and-paper math anymore...

Is anyone else noticing how their students completely fall apart when trying to do math on pen-and-paper? Each year when I get a new class, it seems like a pencil is more and more foreign in their hands. I'm a teacher who has always believed pen-and-paper was the best way to learn math, so I tend to stay away from a lot of the math sites like Khan Academy, unlike most other teachers at my school. But now it seems like digital learning is so ingrained in these students' brains that I don't know what to do. Is anybody else seeing this or am I just going insane lol. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/Ok-Theory-1205 [link] [comments]

Manager sent me home for studying EKGs

Before getting into everything, I should mention that I already put in my two weeks, and this week was supposed to be my last week at this job. Long story short, I work in the ICU and recently had two patients with pacemakers. One of the pacemakers was doing some funky things, which made me realize I was a little rusty with EKGs. I had a tab open with different EKGs and practice questions and was reviewing them periodically while taking care of my patients. My charting was up to date, and my patients were stable. One had already been downgraded to step-down. I went to lunch around 2:30PM. When I came back around 3 PM, my manager pulled me aside and told me that I had been looking at EKGs "all day" instead of taking care of my patients. She then claimed my charting wasn't up to date and that there was something wrong with my notes. However, her main reason for sending me home was that I had been doing EKG practice questions and looking at EKGs "all day." I asked her to show me where in

Patient complaints ("What could you have done")

Does anyone else work in a job where, any time a patient complains, you have to meet with your manager to discuss “what you could have done differently”? I received one complaint because I was unable to do something that was literally against policy. Now my manager wants to meet with me to review what I could have done differently. Honestly, it makes me want to quit. Instead of feeling supported, I feel like I'm constantly on edge and worried that even when I follow policy, I'll still be questioned if a patient is unhappy with the outcome. Students repeat my redirections after me

I had this issue last year, and it seems like it’s going to be a problem again with this new group of students. Many times throughout the day, when I correct a student’s behavior, I get a chorus of students repeating after me. It doesn’t matter if it’s something simple like tying their shoes or a reprimand for interrupting me or leaning back in their chairs. A few times per class period, I'll have a chorus of students repeating after me. "Yeah Jimmy, tie your shoes!" "Oh my God Jimmy, tie your shoes!" "Jimmyyyyy, tie your shoessss!" Obviously, this reduces the likelihood of the original student complying because students don’t want to listen to their peers. It also turns into me having to reprimand the students who are repeating after me, so suddenly one redirection has multiplied into several. It’s exhausting. Last year, it got pretty severe. I ended up doing seat changes, behavior essays, lunch detentions, and parent phone calls, all with varying levels of success. Does anyone have a

made a mistake as a new grad

Yesterday was like my 6th day on the floor with my preceptor. To set the stage a little bit, I previously worked in the ICU as a tech, and now I work in the same ICU as a new grad. My preceptor has said I’ve been keeping up pretty well, granted I haven’t been taking care of a super sick patient yet. He’s been letting me drown just a little bit to see how I handle it lol. Yesterday was my first day doing rounds with the doctors. I feel like I did pretty well throughout rounds except when the NP asked what her blood sugar was for the new admit overnight. I said I checked it this morning and it was 67. It didn’t even register to me in that moment that 67 was low, so I didn’t say or do anything about it. The NP’s eyes got wide and I suddenly realized what I had done 😭 Then she asked if I did anything for it and that’s when I realized, oh shit, it was low and I should’ve done something. Male nurse making friends

TLDR: I (25M) am a nurse working at a moderately sized level 3b NICU with 90% female coworkers. I want to make more friends that are my age but my gf (24) doesn’t like/ want me to hang out with my coworkers outside of work. Hanging out with woman outside of work that she doesn’t know makes her uncomfortable and doesn’t want me to befriend them outside of work. So like the title says I’m a male nurse (25) working at a level 3 NICU. I’ve been here for about three years now and a lot of staff is older women with some newer staff being women in their mid twenties like me. I don’t have many friends that I can hang out with. For my BSN I went to the state university and met four amazing friends that I’m friends with to this day, all women. My gf has met them and is cool with these friends. I have maybe 2 real Guy friends one of which is my childhood best friend who is in dental school and another is an old coworker I used to work with but recently left to work at a level 4 NICU. Failing A Class Can Be An Important Lesson

I'm so tired of administrators presenting videos of educational advocates who declare failure untenable in education. I've had enough of Rick Wormeli telling me I need to give students unlimited retakes on a test. His idea is that kids need to try until they are able to pass, It's not an insane idea in some situations. A lot of kids do need multiple tries at something. However, it seems to be that multiple tries ends up being unlimited tries and the ability to redo something until you find the answers through process of elimination. It's also used to bully teachers into passing kids. Lastly, it discourages kids from really putting in effort. Kids learn over time they don't have to try because they can just do it again. Failure can be a good thing. I've failed in different situations. It's painful and embarrassing, but it taught me something. I sucked at writing going into college. However, through failing essay grades and a lot of effort, I improved. I had to learn something to pass, a

Middle school student shared that his mother teaches discriminatory behavior; how to handle if at all

6th grade science. First year teacher. Male. I’m very good with the whole social aspect of the kids and the year’s going very well so far. One of my students, when we were finishing up class and just having casual conversation about food and life as a class, raised hand to say “My mom tells us not to get Starbucks because they support gay people.” I immediately and calmly shut that down, explaining that “that’s a personal and private topic for home that we don’t address in science class. Okay?” and he nodded and clearly appeared nervous and unsure if he was comfortable about what he said. The rest of the class heard it all. It was over and done as quick as that. I’m wondering 1) If I should’ve explained more saying something like “We do not support discrimination of any people; we support and respect everyone” and 2) I’m just wondering, in terms of the parent, and if for any reason I’d ever meet her (parent conference, open house, etc.) am I supposed to bring this up to explain that th

Leaving nurse for retail as a break?

Has anyone ever left their nursing position to take a mental break and were those jobs hesitant to hire you because of it? I truly need a break from nursing to take care of myself mentally. My anxiety is outrageous and I think about work nonstop… but I fear “BSN, RN” on my resume will push recruiters to thinking I’m overqualified. I haven’t had a retail position since 2021 right before working towards my RN so I would of course have to explain that 2021-2026 gap of work. Any advice is appreciated! EDITED POSTED: I’ve tried SEVERAL specialties. A burn out is a burn out and I’m at the limit. The post is asking for those who have ALSO experienced the same thing and gone to another field and/or to retail in THIS CASE. I’ve worked retail PREVIOUSLY and ENJOYED what I did. I’m just asking advice on HOW they may have done so. Thanks!! submitted by /u/consideredtaken [link] [comments]

Unable to tolerate night shifts, but so early in my career

Part of the reason I went into nursing is because I am (was?) a total night-owl— I used to like to stay up late and I preferred working nights when I worked in retail. Now, only 2.5 years after graduating from nursing school, I have lost all ability to tolerate night shifts. Last night was my first stretch of 3 night shifts—only 8-hours per shift— and by 5:00am I couldn’t think, I could barely form sentences, I couldn’t process what my coworkers were saying to me, and it felt like I was genuinely drunk. It doesn’t feel safe to practice nursing like this. I try to do everything right… like i spread out my caffeine consumption (1 small redbull) throughout my shift, I take my Vyvanse at midnight, I eat lots of snacks, I eat a good meal before work, and I sleep at least 4 hours before my first night shift in a stretch, then 8 hours for each following shift. Despite all that, I feel like absolute death when I work nights. I was perfectly fine with nights 2 years ago, and now it’s like I hav

Stupid med error

Pt has a new order for seroquel. Bumped her from 300mg to 400mg okay sure whatever no problem. Go grab the meds and for some reason. Pyxis has me pull two 300mg tablets. What? What am I supposed to do with this? That doesn’t split evenly. Open the eMAR and sure enough “administer 1.3333333 tab” again, what? For a brief moment I consider telling charge that this is stupid and a med error waiting to happen. Haha. Well. :))) I ended up grabbing scissors from an instrument tray to split the pill (since pill splitters don’t split in thirds) then giving her 1 2/3 tab instead of 1 1/3 tab. Yknow, the exact med error I thought about not even 10 minutes prior. I didn’t realize until HOURS later at like 0100. Unrelated (allegedly) to the roughly 500mg seroquel I gave her, her blood pressure ended up bottoming out to 70s/40s. Patient is fine! She got a bolus and her BP came back up she’s just zonked (but rousable) I’m embarrassed more than anything, and I filled out an incident report about it to

Inpatient hospice

I’m a clinical liaison for a hospice company, based inside of a hospital. My role is to respond to referrals, provide information to patients and families, discharge plan, and admit those who meet criteria with unmanaged symptoms to inpatient hospice. With the attendings/hospitalists that we have a good, personable relationship with, they will come by our office and give us a heads up with any incoming referrals (especially if they’re symptomatic/critical). Today, we received a blind referral early in the afternoon to which we reached out to the family within the hour. The family states they’re not interested in meeting with us yet. That happens a lot, considering patients and families look to us for the not-sugar-coated answer in regards to prognosis and a lot of times this is their first time hearing about the option for hospice. Not to mention overall poor communication from the providers/status updates. So we send a message to the team (nurse, attending, CM, etc) to relay the messa

ISO experiences caring for parents

Has anyone here used their license to become a caretaker for an aging family member (ie parent)? What was your experience like? Context: I currently work on a pediatric surgical/step down unit. However, my parents recently approached my husband and I about building an ADU on our property for them to live in. I love the idea, and I’d love to live in a more multigenerational home. I also know they have already made plans for what they want to do should they need assisted living. However, I feel like they’d be happier at home (in the ADU) compared to the nursing facility across the country that they have picked out. I feel like it would be better to be close to us and if I can help care for them as a nurse, why wouldn’t I? It feels like the most spiritual act of service I can do. Feminine Hygiene Supplies in HS

Male middle school teacher transitioning to high school (albeit only 9th) this year. In the past, I've always kept feminine hygiene supplies in my class, freely and discretely available to students in an accessible location. I point it out week 1 when we're going over where everything is in the classroom, and then that's that - it sticks with students (or sticks with some, who remind others, whatever the case) and gets used plenty from when I go to restock. Figure it's an awkward age and all that. That all said, is that still something to do in HS? I mean, obviously periods still happen, but I imagine students are more accustomed to it, have easier access to whatever they need elsewhere, and all that. I know it can't really hurt, but also being a guy, always want to be extra careful about anything that can be misconstrued. submitted by /u/Dassine [link] [comments]

I wanted to post a follow-up cause about last year, I went on a rant in this thread about how I’m scared I actually hate nursing 6 months into it. So here’s an update: I actually don’t mind it at all. I was a medsurg nurse postgrad for 6mos (hated it) and switched to home health nursing which I’ll be hitting my 1 year anniversary on November. I love the life that I’ve built around nursing so far. I’m in the field from 9am-2pm to see patients, would work around 3-4 days a week if I’m not oncall, I’m able to chart anytime anywhere which gives me the flexibility to go and explore places, I make decent money (though not as much as I could make in the hospital). I workout as much as I can, I read books cause I just love it so much. If I could go back, I’ll give myself a warm hug and tell her that it’ll be okay, that I can still have an impact in my patient’s life without having to sacrifice m

I'm fishing for some info here and I know some nurses work here in the Chicago area are in this thread. Last year ascension sold a majority of there hospitals to Prime Health leaving only St Alexius, Alexian Brothers and St Joseph in Chicago as the last bastion for Ascension in the IL market. Does your unit self schedule? We have NO control over our schedules. Childcare is impossible. Manager won't budge

Curious how your units work with scheduling. Most places I've worked at have either been self schedule, or outpatient jobs with set days. Easy, simple. My current job is neither of those things. Our DON makes our schedules. She refuses to give ANY set shifts. Not even 1 predictable shift a week. The most she will do is accommodate ONE "request" per week, and that's not even guaranteed. So if I have 2 appointments one week, or any other obligation, it's not guaranteed that I can make it to both. Also everyone's position is "rotating" meaning we work days and evenings. She tries to accommodate everyone's preferences for either days OR evenings, but she has the power to schedule you for either shift, because "it's a rotating position." I work part time, 24 hrs, three 8's. I sat down with her and asked for atleast ONE set shift per week, so I can plan for childcare. She refused. Nope. I have one child starting kindergarten, one child starting parttime preschool. Husband works fulltime, my

Pulled From My Classroom, Accused of Cheating, Then “Invited Back” — What Are My Options Now?

I’m a state‑testing grade teacher, and at the end of this school year my grade level was accused of cheating on our state test — after I followed instructions directly from my principal. I’ve never been properly trained on the do’s and don’ts of administering the test, so I relied entirely on the guidance given to me by administration. In the middle of the school day, without warning, the other two teachers and I were pulled from our classrooms and told to report to the office. Once in the office, I was scolded, yelled at, had words put in my mouth, and accused of things I did not do. I wasn’t given any opportunity to explain my side or clarify that I had followed the instructions I was given. We were told we would be placed on administrative leave and that the district would be pushing for termination unless we resigned. We weren’t allowed to speak to our students, which left them confused and worried. (As leaving without a proper goodbye was very out of the norm for me) Meanwhile , t

New/young teachers: A healthy social life is impenative to maintain sanity

I learned this the hard way many years ago and it nearly drove me out of the profession. I once had a real bad year and I doubled and tripled down on trying to fix it by spending countless hours after school trying to make engaging lessons and get all my classes to be perfect with no issue. The result was I was so tense and on edge during the school day because my whole life had revolved around the way the kids acted. I was neglecting my friends and my hobbies and put all my eggs in the teaching basket. I was miserable because the thing I was putting all this energy into wasn't perfect (it never would be). Once I realized that friends were starting to not invite me to things because they assumed the answer was no a switch flipped. Turns out the more you invest in your social life, hobbies and relationships you significantly feel less stress about work as it becomes a smaller part of your overall life. Work became what I did but not who I was. So teachers: go home. go to that yoga class

I am currently a clinical marketing liaison RN between a pharmacy and hospitals/physician offices. I’ve gain more interest in the pharmacy area. I want to leave the marketing part of it and into something pharmacy related. Any nurses out there done this transition? Or work for a pharmacy as a nurse? Interested in hearing about the nursing careers/jobs can I pursue in this field. submitted by /u/blackwid0w73 [link] [comments]

I have severely lucked out on my classes this year… DFW, high school

None of my class periods are hectic or bad or disrespectful or crazy. They all listen, they participate, we’re 4 days in and they’re engaging in classroom conversation. Nobody is leaving their trash on the floor, or behind, or fighting me. Yes there are some individuals who are attention seeking and acting out, but as a whole, my students are killing it! I am so thrilled for the rest of this school year because I feel like we got off on the right foot and are actually going to be able to get stuff done. Context: I work at a T1 school that has some bad discipline issues (principal is on year 5 and has made massive improvements and we are getting better every day) First year teacher, second year at this school. submitted by /u/Specific_Tonight_877 [link] [comments]

NYU Langone Tisch MICU

Hi, NYC nurses! I was offered a position at NYU Langone Tisch MICU and wanted to know how your experience has been there. I was told the unit also has stepdown patients, so how often do you have 3 patients, and what’s the workload like? submitted by /u/Beautiful-Violinist [link] [comments]

How do you know it's time to quit?

I have been working as an inpatient psych nurse for a little over a year. I think it is fascinating and I really enjoy doing admission assessments and getting to know patients. However, I'm starting to get burnt out by the increasing medical acuity, inappropriate admissions (ie old ladies with dementia) and shitty management. I have an opportunity to switch to a cushy outpatient job with the same pay at the same company. I'm worried I'll be bored. How do I know it's time to jump ship? I don't like my manager, but she's not on the floor a lot. submitted by /u/chaoticmosaic [link] [comments]

Weird situation

I am a high school teacher at the same district where my daughter is an elementary student. There was a decision made to cut a teacher to help the budget which put my third grade daughter’s class at 33 children. My wife had a meeting with central office to discuss concerns about this change over the summer and then sent a follow up email following the first week of school with her concerns. I was not included in this email and it came from my wife’s personal email and was addressed to the superintendent and building principal. However, when they replied, they did not reply to her email at all, but replied to me, addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Strange because I wasn’t involved in the initial thread. My wife was intentionally taken off the thread and me added. Is this standard? We are trying to separate me being an employee from parents of a student in the district and find them replying to me and not my wife, very weird. Is this just strange or is this standard since I’m an employee? submitt

Are walkthroughs common in your district?

Hi! I just wanted to see how often or common it is for your principal/asst principal to come in and watch you teach. I notice they come a lot in the district i am in (and co-workers have quit due to the amount of times they have come in) but I have teacher friends from other counties that say they shouldn’t be coming in at all unless it’s a formal/informal observation and I wanted to know. Edit: thank you guys for letting me know walkthroughs are common! That eases my mind a little bit knowing it’s not just our district and everyone has them. I know if I want to stay in this profession, I have be comfortable with anyone watching me teach. However, if I am not comfortable, I am not afraid to pick my mental health in the end. I love teaching and it’s so fun so I hope I get better but if not, thats ok too! Anyway, love and appreciation to you guys 😚 submitted by /u/Logical_Particular47 [link] [comments]

AI in PD

It was my school’s first day of PD today. I’m at a K-8 title I near a major city. The amount of generative AI used today alone made me feel so uncomfortable. The signage around the school, the posters and tapestries hanging around the gym, our shirts we’re required to wear for events for the year, and the graphics on all the slides. It’s all slop. The amount of people not only okay with it but PRAISING it was even worse. Someone complimented the shirt design and the principal proudly confirmed that we had ChatGPT to thank for that. This hits different for me because multiple people on my team were literally reprimanded for using AI in their lesson plans last school year. Not sure how I’m going to navigate this year without hurting some feelings or ruffling some feathers. Is anyone else seeing this? What’s going on??? submitted by /u/1159seconds [link] [comments]

Neurodivergent Teachers

To my ADHD/Autistic teachers- how are you guys able to keep doing this job? I just started year 6 and am very close to not being unable to function as a human. My home is a mess, I’m barely forcing myself to shower bc my executive functioning is in the shitter, I cry almost every morning bc I’m at a breaking point and when I get home I break down bc I’m simply not ok. I’m in the process of seeing a therapist, but I need a new career and am unsure how I’m going to achieve that when I’m already in active burnout. My brain loves the active stimulation that comes with the actual day of teaching kids and being busy, but I absolutely hate the extra stuff and not having a work/life balance. No matter how hard I try, something suffers and it’s usually my health/home life bc I feel an immense amount of pressure to be a good teacher. Luckily I’m single with no kids, but I cannot keep living like this. I’m on the verge of a huge mental breakdown. Editing to say that I think I’ve realized that may
