North Carolina asking teachers to step up to foster In short, an overwhelmed foster system is looking for help and noticing teachers would be a good fit, being good with kids and all, for short-term placements. It's even advocated for by a teacher. Now, good foster care is important, and those who open the homes are angels who want to make a difference. I fully encourage good people to consider fostering. And they're right: teachers are kind of a natural fit. And the focus is on short-term situations. Yet, something about this initiative rubs me the wrong way: we need more foster homes and teachers are selfless people who are in it for the kids. Let's target them in a campaign! I don't know. I’m having huge problems with my vital sign check offs. During the check offs I couldn’t find out the diastolic… I think it’s because I’m hearing other sounds(like my fingers on the stethoscope), and I can’t figure out 100% if I chose the right numbers on the diastolic when practicing If you have any tips it’d be appreciated. I got a total of $500 to spend on my classroom this year! It's from two different pots of money. As an interventionist, I come up with fun ways to use random instructional materials. Anyways, I got an email asking me to justify certain materials like.... construction paper/graph sketch pad for a dysgraphia student/clip magnets for word cards and other things. Ok. So, I'll send an email justifying these things that cost maybe $50 total. Sure. Then I get an email saying the graph paper and magnets are rejected? Like, those were like maybe $20 total. But like, what the hell? We get an email from the sup telling us not to share Amazon wish lists because of how it looks to the public, but yet there's numerous items that's been disproved in years past, like kleenex, feminine products, snacks/candy for prizes, hell, I had to even justify fidgets and receive an extensive approval process (I finally had to say it was on a student's 504 in order for it to get a reluctant "fine.") I have always been told not to use any veins in the hand or forearm if an AC vein has blown. Yet, most nurses I work with do so anyway. I posted a few days ago about wanting to install a portable AC unit in my 7th grade classroom. A unit was gifted to me by a friend. The unit is here! I installed it. Before installing it, for whatever reason while I was at PD, our admin team had a PD of their own and chose my room. They saw the AC box sitting there and didn’t say a word. A rant in the similar vein to the post about anti-vaxxers, I wish we could ban patients who clearly do not follow instructions and then come into the clinic IRATE and ready to fight with any and everyone. This post was inspired by a mother (it's always the moms, right?) who signed herself up on our "hold my place in line" service instead of her daughter who needed to be seen. It states very clearly on the service that you need to enter the information of the patient needing to be seen, not yourself. When this mom and daughter gets to the clinic, they are informed of our policy regarding this, they are provided with a written policy, AND a screenshot where it is highlighted that the patient information needs to match the patient who needs to be seen. What does mom do? She starts screaming at the front desk staff. At the clinic coordinator. At the nurse rooming her (although the nurse did manage to deescalate her a bit). Hi! I’m a fairly new teacher who teaches Grade 7 Health, which includes sexual health education. Our sexual health curriculum covers topics such as puberty, safer sex, contraception, STIs, consent, gender diversity, gender-based violence, and online safety. I’ve noticed that my male students seem to be much more uncomfortable discussing sexual health and puberty than I expected. This past year I had multiple boys refuse to attend sexual health classes, even when their parents wanted them to participate. This year, about 50% of the boys tried to get out of the unit. While the girls were all fine with participating. Many were so uncomfortable that they tried to leave or avoid the class. Their parents had to speak with them to tell them they had to participate. The reactions have sometimes been extreme. One student threw a chair because he had label a diagram of a penis. Another student had to call to go home after feeling sick because we talked about what an IUD was. I expected students
My son's going into first grade this fall, and I'm increasingly understanding the frustrations that some parents have with schools and how that may carry over into some of the attitude I get from them as a teacher. I realized this morning that I haven't heard anything this summer about some before-care forms that were required last year, so after digging around for 5 minutes on the district website, I finally found them and learned they were due weeks ago. And now there will be a late fee accessed to submit them and kid's before-care will be delayed by at least two weeks while my paperwork is processed. Sorry if this is too gross for Reddit. I was a nosepicker when I was much younger, but I remember stopping in kindergarten because my friends said something about. This year, I have multiple kids that not only pick but...eat. Openly, too! No one says anything, some make faces. One kid is a studious, but awkward kid, he will pick and eat as he's answering questions for the class. Another is a new girl, but quickly got some friends with the cliquy girls, and she does it too! These two imparticular pick and eat while so often, participating in class, talking to friends, it astounds me! Several other kids will at least pause their habit or try to hide it a bit better in a crowd. I was an ED RN for 11 years, through the pandemic. I then decided I needed something different after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, and switched to Labor and Delivery for a few years, which I loved. I then started having runs of V Tach and needed a cardiac ablation. After surviving that, I decided I would take on a House Supervisor role. It wasnt quite right for me because little did I know I had been suffering from C-PTSD from the pandemic, traumatic births (my own, and those I cared for), my new health problems, and just from generally working in the ED. I became incredibly anxious and felt like I was just white-knuckling it through life. I switched back to Labor and Delivery thinking I just needed to get back there to fix things. I hid my struggles well and when my director recommended me for a manager role, I quickly accepted to escape from patient care - thinking that would help to be away from life and death decisions. I hope it is ok to post here. I worked as a pct for a tele floor combined with an IMCU unit in the back from 2021 to late 2024. I tried nursing school in 2023 but I had quit due to burnout and back pain. I eventually quit being a pct in 2024 to get a work from home job because I was in a lot of pain at the end of my shift. I'm only 2026 and suffer from bad lower back pain. I wished I advocated for myself more and practiced proper body mechanics. There was some night where I was the only tech to 20 something tele patients and 11 imcu patients. Our floor was kind of a weird layout. We had tele patients in the floor but we had an 11 bed imcu in the back. Some nurses were really helpful and some nurses gave me looks when I asked for some help so I was rolling patients that were a two person assist by myself because I needed to get my work done or day shift would complain about the number of baths I didn't do despite me being the only tech on the floor. Our floor is supposed to have 3 techs

So at work a confused patient was holding onto the wall handrail like she was riding a subway train. She looks at me and asks, "Where are we right now?" so I told her "Youre in the hospital." So for context i am hopefully starting my adult nursing course in a few weeks time. However I am now absolutely bricking it as I dont know if they'll let me on the course. My enhanced DBS came back last weekend with a conviction for an unpaid train fare and subsequent conviction under the railways act. I did not disclose this on my fitness to practice form or at any other time. My reason for doing so wasnt an attempt to conceal the matter it was a two part error on my end, firstly I had genuinely forgotten about it. The incident happened in Oct 2019 with the conviction taking place Dec 2020, during this time I was struggling greatly with my mental health and was subsequently admitted to an acute ward as an inpatient in March 2021. My other reason for not disclosing this is that even if I had remembered about it, I thought as the train networks are ran by a private company I assumed it would be a civil matter, similar to a parking ticket and that it would not or could not be a criminal

I currently work in mental health and It seems like my current job is wanting me to be a nurse for them once I get my license, which is hopefully about 6 months away. It would be an easy in, however it’s a Monday through Friday and it’s a lot of office work. I really want to get medical experience first and just searching through jobs right now, a lot of them want a BSN or need experience as a nurse. I’ll be graduating with an ADN. I’m afraid if I stay in psych, I’ll lose my skills and forget a lot of things by the time I start looking for another job. I want to do anything but psych right now considering I’ve been in the field for the past 7 years now. I think I’m just extremely worried because I’ve been seeing nothing but people saying it’s hard to get a job right now as a nurse. We have 105 students in the grade, and 20 of them are SPED (many more have 504s). One has a Down syndrome and he’s very low-functioning; he has to be walked from class to class. Another is a little higher but she cannot read or write, and is very limited in her speech too. I have a co-teacher for half the class length, but he spends all his time just helping those two lowest functioning students (they’re in different classes), while the other 8 sped kids are on their own (I do help them whenever I can). We also have a boy who doesn’t speak a lick of English. Everything has to be translated, otherwise he’ll be throwing fits out of boredom. Last year, we had three students like this. Is this normal?? Hi, I’m a quebec nurse that did her dec and bachelors degree in nursing. I’ve been a nurse for less than 2 years now in the quebec hospital system. I work in a very nice hospital with the best team and it’s truly a subject that passions me but i feel so worn out and guilty and frustrated. Every shift it’s just horrible and it puts me in such an awful state. I don’t really know what to do about it. I teach Secondary Social Studies. For years I've used short, relevant history videos to fill extra class time, help with transitions between activities, or just enrich learning. But the last few years, I seen Social Studies AI Slop videos become so prevalent on YouTube and other sites that I only use videos that are at least 3-5 years old. Anything posted within the last few years I don't even bother. Kids can tell right away and it just becomes a distraction. I've created my own library of downloaded clips so it doesn't affect me now. I recently applied and was accepted into working as a dietary aide at a nursing home. This will be my first ever experience working in a hospital or working in this sort of environment. I had my first encounter with a patient who exhibited the signs of one of the two, and I made my first mistake by almost giving her a pair of scissors- which thankfully, there weren’t any and unbeknownst to me, were explicitly kept from the patients. I had a conversation with the patient later on after the incident while waiting in the room towards the end of orientation when she had made another stop by before she began to repeatedly state that she wanted to go home, that someone told her she couldn’t go into her room, and that she had no where to go. I was with one of the main staff or nurses, who came in during the last few minutes of orientation, so I was able to see her correct the patient and redirect her. My sister passed away at 34 two weeks ago on Wednesday August 5th, the day before the first day of school for students. It was extremely unexpected, and the circumstances of her passing and our relationship at the time are quite traumatic for me. I’m on FMLA leave until September 1st, but I’m starting to feel guilty for taking that much time off. I haven’t even met my students yet. But I wanted to give myself time until after her memorial (which is August 29th) since she did not want a funeral. I’ve been feeling okay for the last few days, but then listened to some voicemails she left me, and I’m very much not okay. Summer is a wonderful, blissful thing as a teacher. 2-3 months of freedom and relaxation after 10 months of hell. We get a few months to feel like a human being again after acting as teaching robots the rest of the year. And the general public oh so often points to summer as a perk and a reason we should be thankful for our jobs. But they don’t see the full picture. We. Are. Not. Paid. For. Summer. Most US teaching contracts are for 10 months, not 12. We can distribute our pay over summer (and many districts are now making this required which is a whole other tangent), but by distributing our pay over summer, we’re being paid less. We need to start showing our actual 12 month salaries, not our 10 month salaries. We are being paid thousands, if not tens of thousands, dollars less than our published contracts, because of summer. I had a bit of a rough day today. Some of it was due to being saddled with ~30 middle schoolers, but the main reason was that the teacher badly underplanned for today. The school was on a block period system and for each 90-minute period, the students were given... a two-page worksheet. Most finished it in under 30 minutes. I tried to have the students work on iReady and IXL, but some of them didn't have laptops yet, plus do you really expect middle schoolers to diligently work on their laptops for 60 minutes? To be fair, I understand that as a substitute, I should have something ready to go in case the sub plan is insufficient. But today was the most egregious I have ever seen, to the point that I would be reluctant to sub for this teacher again. Anyway, suggestions on activities I could do in such a situation? this is my 3rd nursing job in 2 years and I don’t know if I even want to stick with this one. I have no idea what to do anymore, I can’t keep quitting and starting new jobs but I can’t find anything that doesn’t make me dread going to work. I started on a neuro medsurg floor, got tired of all my patients being disoriented and treating me like crap. the workload was insane and it didn’t feel safe so after a year I moved on to inpatient endoscopy. While I liked the work itself this unit was the worst managed place I’ve ever worked at in my life, my coworkers were crying and screaming at eachother every day it was honestly ridiculous. the call was terrible, no one had worked there more than a year and knew what they were doing, the charge nurse was having an affair with a rad tech and was absent, management was absent and so no one did their job and hid on their phones all day. I had my first day as a first year teacher today, and I left like I have absolutely no handle on my class. I went into the day knowing that the first few weeks are supposed to be about explicitly teaching routines, procedures, and expectations, and I genuinely thought I was doing that. But the class was just SO disruptive. I felt like I was constantly stopping, redirecting, waiting for them to stop talking, reminding them of the voice level, etc. It felt like nothing I said actually stuck. What really got in my head was that other teachers would come into the room to help and suddenly the kids would be perfect, which made me feel like the problem was me and that they just don’t see me as someone they need to listen to. So, today I had my first Karen of the school year show up at the main office. She wanted to speak to the entire administration team, but we told her that wasn't possible at this time. So she settled on me and the assistant principal. She went on a 5-minute long rant about how her kid was bullied and hated by his teachers at his last school. And she expects us to keep our teachers in line and make sure that they like and respect her son. Apparently, the reason he got bad grades and in trouble so often was because the teachers just hated him for no legitimate reason. At least that's what his mom says. Curious the fastest you ever quit a toxic nursing position? This is definitely a record for me. I accepted a job as dispensing nurse at an outpatient MAT facility (methadone/suboxone). I ignored some red flags in the hiring process. First off, I wasn’t contacted for about a month after applying. I was gearing up to accept a job elsewhere that I really wanted even though it was a long commute but then at the last minute I changed my mind to pursue the dispensing position instead because it was so much closer to my home. Once I interviewed and was offered the position and accepted it, the interim director could not keep straight what parts of the onboarding process I had/hadn’t completed. I chalked this up to her being overwhelmed by managing 2 facilities. But I didn’t get confirmation about my start date until the Friday afternoon before. When I emailed her basic questions about my first day (ie: what time are they expecting me, what entrance, should I make sure I bring anything, etc) i
