I just finished a leadership program that is mostly designed to qualify teachers to be assistant principals. The majority of the assignments and discussion topics (and every class final) is designed to get prospective admin to view their schools as failing schools with helpless students and combative, lazy teachers. They are being indoctrinated to think you and your school are in desperate need of their fundamental change. That’s the type of stuff that led people to stop teaching phonics. Having to change things just for the sake of changing things. It’s a mess. Anyone else have a principal like this? Little nugget that gets added to emails. Our meetings begin at EXACTLY 7:59:59 and anyone not already seated with listening ears is shamed. Look I also don’t like waiting 10-15 minutes for meetings to start late but this feels like going from one extreme to another. I also don’t feel like a person’s personality archetype should be a management style. I am a teacher myself so I understand how special these notes and gifts can feel. Recently, my husband's grandma had to move out of her 2 story house and into a retirement community. We are now selling her house and need to get rid of a lot of stuff including her big display of student gifts. 1st time poster, long time lurker 😌. Year 4 in education here, 3rd year here in good ol' Texas. Not to dox myself too much, but in one of the school districts that TEA recently took over. Just kinda wanted to make a post about some things being implemented that I haven't really seen anyone post about. To preface - not HISD :). Cell Phone Policy: \- Last year Texas passed a bill to ban student cell use during school hours, it was up to each district on how to implement it. Mine said ey, the kid will keep in their bag - 🤪. This year there are 5 steps/ course of action if the student(s) are caught with a phone. Preface - all parent pick up, 1.) End of Day. 2.) 7 day confiscation. 3.) 14 day, 4.) 30 day + 6-10 days OCI 5.) Rest of Semester and get sent to Alt school (DAEP). 👀👀 2.) 4 hours in the auditorium listening to our superintendent press us to vote red and listen to someone try and sell us their book for 4 hours while we eat breakfast. THEN we get to turn around and have our campus meetings to finish out the day "YAY so excited!" Started this because I’ve seen some horrible advice on here and have been through years of horrible “veteran teacher” advice. Folks, nothing worse than a teacher who knows everything about teaching and wants to mentor all the newbies. Be wary and cautious. Choose your school tribe and who you get advice from carefully. About to start year 3. Year 1 was insane, as is typical. Year 2 was wayyyyy better but still exhausting. Year 3 starts in just a few days, and I’m dreading it. I love teaching. I love most of my students. I love my subject matter. I am fine with the school I’m at. It isn’t amazing but it could be a lot worse. I like my coworker team. My department admin is good enough. It isn’t the bullshit I’m dreading. Nor the annoying martyr coworkers, the extra unpaid duties, the toxic positivity. It isn’t even the student behaviors or the crazy parents. Above all else, I am dreading the pure emotional and physical exhaustion. Beginning year 32 in the classroom this week. In my career I’ve had over 2 dozen principals and assistant principals. Every 3-5 years some new principal thinks they’ve found the key to making our school the crown jewel of education in our state. I’ve lived through data walls, reading groups, curriculum mapping, posting the learning goal on the board (I have 6 preps a day, I’m not doing it) and so many more pet projects. Too many to remember. ALL of these “initiatives” share ONE THING in common. Hey everyone! I’m looking for some advice from teachers who have been in or have knowledge about a similar situation. My wife recently received an offer from the district where I work for a position that would be 0.5 classroom teacher and 0.5 building substitute. She currently has a 1.0 teaching position in another district. The reason we’re considering the move is that working in the same district would make our lives much easier logistically (commuting, schedules, etc.), and the salary schedule in my district is significantly higher over the long term. The dilemma is that, in the short term, she’d likely make about $10,000 less by taking the split position than if she stayed where she is. On the other hand, if she were able to move into a full-time teaching position in my district within a year or two, she’d end up making around $10,000 more than she would by staying in her current district. For the longest time being the black sheep at my district or as a teacher in general has bothered me. I was the only teacher at my district that wasn’t in a relationship or had kids. I felt like everyone treated me differently because of this especially parents. I’m also very introverted and don't go to many school events or activities like a lot of teachers do. I’ve always felt left out and unincluded because of this. Im starting to realize that I like being the black sheep. I don’t have to worry about the drama and can just keep to myself about things. This is the time of year that I am often asked about advice, as I’ve been teaching for a long time. You might get an angry email - maybe multiple from one parent. Never put anything in writing because they WILL use it against you. Offer a phone call. “Thanks for letting me know, Mrs. X. I am available tomorrow at 7:30am for a phone call. You can call me at xxx-xxxx school phone number.” Here is the trick: I have sent this email dozens of times. NOT ONCE has a parent actually ever called me. I work in an EBD program. I teach 3rd-5th and I don’t have a planning or lunch during the school day because all three grades go to Specials/Lunch/Recess at different times. There are 4 of us teachers in the program and none of us have lunch/planning. My lead keeps saying they’re “talking to the district” and trying to get us more para’s, but I don’t think this will be solved unless we hired a whole other teacher and multiple more para’s. I’m new and the returning teachers said last year they also didn’t get a lunch or planning. This is very illegal. I feel silenced in a way because this is a very competitive county to get into, and I want to teach somewhere else in the county eventually, but I also don’t want to go without lunch/planning an entire year without any extra compensation. Hi yall, I enrolled into teachers for tomorrow to get my foot in the door as a teacher (admitted not my choice, my mom kept nagging me about it even though I didnt want to be a teacher to begin with). I was active in the online courses for all of 2 months then decided to go ahead and drop out because I dont plan to become a teacher, im still trying to pursue a career in the field of my degree. Teachers Of Tomorrow representative sent me an email to respond to with an answer of 2 questions as to why im withdrawing, I responded to the email only for the same address to resend that same email back to me about "answer these questions". And that was over a month ago prior to the next billing period, and I just checked my bank account and apparently they have billed me AGAIN even though I should have been withdrawn over a month ago. Last school year was our first with a new principal. He’s only stayed at each district he’s worked in for about two years 🚩 He and the dean he brought with him had nearly double-digit grievances filed against them. By the end of the year, more than 30 of our ~80 teachers had left the district. Many had 6+ years of experience, and several had 10+. I realized in my short time teaching that teachers are a different breed! I’ve never seen so many people in a profession that complain; yet, continue to do the same thing. STOPPPPPP freaking working for free and outside of contract hours. STOP! If we all stop together, they will have no choice but to conform. Hey everyone. I need to vent, and honestly, I could use some perspective from anyone who has survived the meat grinder of the first few years. Tomorrow is day one of my second year teaching. I’m currently staring at the ceiling, completely sleepless, and genuinely sick to my stomach. I keep asking myself how I let myself get back into this situation. Last year was my first year, and it absolutely broke me. I teach at what is supposed to be the "nicest" school in my town, but my classes were a total war zone. My school (a charter) brings teachers back a full week before the public schools do. During my first two years here, that week was full of 2 hours meetings that could have been emails, giving us 30-60 minutes a day to work in our classrooms. Back in May, the admin sent out an anonymous form asking for opinions on PD for the first week back next week. I decided to go on a rant for the last question, which was "What types of PD do you think would be beneficial to you?" My response: "Absolutely none. Every 2 hour meeting we have could be an email because we already know it. I'm in Michigan, and I'm wondering if my write-up will follow me into a new district. For context, what I've been worried about is that I was written up for an outburst in front of staff, and they claimed I punched a wall even though I didn't. I did have an "outburst," which means I cried because of a significant amount of stress and grief I was under while at work. This was also in a back area away from students. I never punched the wall because it was concrete, and if I did, I'd probably fracture something. I did rebuttal and asked for it to be attached to my file. I basically explained that I didn't punch the wall because the walls were concrete, I didn't have any injuries, and no one examined me to verify I was hurt from punching the wall. Again, these are thick walls, and I would know if I had punched it. What I'm most scared about is a school that has already offered me a job but needs to request files from my old employer. A lot of students and teachers are coming in with prescription AI glasses now. They are their only pair of glasses meaning they cannot meaningfully see without them. We have been told we cannot take them up in spite of the tech use policy due to them being prescription, and to just act as though we're always being filmed. When it comes to testing though, how will this work? Leaving aside FERPA questions, I know the script last year included AI glasses as a thing that couldn't be in the room. Teachers can be told to take them off and get new ones I suppose, but the kids will come in with them regardless. Do we not let them test? Do we tell them to test without their glasses? I have been lucky enough to have been home with my twins for 8 months now. The timing worked out where I didn’t have to return for the rest of the 25-26 school year once they were born. Monday will be my first day back to work and today the anxiety has hit me hard. I’m so nervous to only see them for a few minutes in the morning, then get home to pretty much do their bedtime routine and put them to sleep. I feel like I’m going to miss everything. I am fortunate that my mom will be watching the babies and has promised we can FaceTime and she’ll send pictures and videos. I know I am luckier than most with the amount of maternity leave I had and having family support. But I just dread Monday and leaving them. I do love the subject I teach and grade level. I am socially awkward. Generally, I do much better with face-to-face conversations with parents, but I do make a lot of parent phone calls. (I teach grades 3 and 4, in a single class.) The problem I have is ending the phone call. I am awkward and the things that come out of my mouth leave me shaking my head in embarrassment. Things like telling a parent ‘thanks for taking my call’, when they asked for the call and it was prearranged. I think I wanted to say thanks for taking the time for the call. I don’t know. I just never know how to segue into it. If I am calling to notify a behaviour incident, I just want the parent to know. I don’t need them to explain or apologise or tell me the punishment etc. Then I want to end the call. But I end up stumbling over myself. I'm starting my 4th year teaching and unfortunately I have yet to become faster at planning. This is largely due to never being in the same position for more than one year. I started as a special education teacher with no training in the area, the district just desperately needed somebody. Then I was moved to 3rd grade self-contained. My 3rd year I switched districts and ended up as a 5th grade ELA and Science teacher and this year I'm still 5th grade in the district but we will be self-contained. I'm hoping next year will be better as I'll have at least a year under my belt of all the 5th grade subjects but there's a chance our grade level will lose a section next year. I've basically had to start over again every year of my career. If it continues like this I think the planning will burn me out faster than the behaviors and crazy parents. Hi - I landed a long term subbing position for a 6th grade classroom. I’m really excited to get started, but being relatively younger (23) I’ve been overthinking the point of staying in contact with parents. I guess I don’t have much frame of reference. Over the year, how much are you reaching out to parents and for what reasons? They never really went over this in detail in undergrad, or in my internship. I’m not worried about parent teacher conferences, but things like calls or emails home, disciplinary stuff, courtesy messages, course updates- are you guys even doing this kind of thing anyway? I’m starting a job as a bookkeeper in a local public school. I have no experience with working in the school system, but I do have kiddos in our schools. Our admin (HS) every so often will make a big push for us to offer more extracurriculars, and a few teachers always decide they're going to offer a photography club or a Magic card club or whatever. 4 kids show up to these things on the first day, and three weeks later there is only one kid, if he remembers to attend. It seems that the demand among the students just isn't there. Football, volleyball, and track are full of kids, but even if we add another sports team it's mainly populated by the kids from football, volleyball and track. Because of strikes and things, lots of teachers have gone basically work-to-rule and don't do extracurriculars out of principle, but in the end that seems irrelevant since the kids aren't interested anyway. I can imagine a world where this was changed, but the path to changing it seems to be changing something else about the school, not just offering more and more activities to the same small number of participants. The Oklahoma Lottery is a absolute joke. They say they Support Oklahoma Education. I am just so exhausted, y'all. I'm going into third year teaching third grade and I feel like I want to leave already. I started 2 years ago about a month into the school year. Turns out, that class of kids were (and still are) known as the nightmare class. They have made multiple extremely experienced teachers up and quit. It was a rough year, but I made it through. Test scores weren't great but my team didn't care about helping me and it was my first year, so understandable. My first full year, last year, I had the class from hell. The 2nd grade teachers literally asked why admin put that combination together and if I was drinking to get through the year. The other two classes were absolutely fine. It took me a week after school was over to finally stop looking like I had the shell-shock stare. Had to step in between kids multiple times, dealt with a whole ton of disruptive behaviors, dealt with a kid who smeared poop in the bathroom, and a kid told me it would be fun to kill me, etc

Am I alone in thinking that once you have committed and been convicted of multiple violent felonies, you should forfeit your right to attend in-person school? For example, I logged into my school email today and have to contact two different juvenile probation officers about three different kids before the first day of school. Two of them are for shootings and one is for assault/robbery. After 18 years, I do not get the point of keeping them in school and wasting money and resources on them. They are all at junior level or above and should be seniors, but all have only freshman credits because they keep getting arrested. I actually had a parent tell me that her kid found the giant bag of pot and the gun he was caught with last year in the bathroom, but he wasn’t going to bring the pot home because it was moldy, so he shouldn’t be in trouble for that—glossing over the fact that I took a 9mm off him. I’ve taught Pre-K for 34 years. I’ve been at my current school for 20. As of July 1st, 2026, a law enacted mandates that any program receiving public funding may not exclude, suspend or expel a child for any reason. My program followed the mandate beginning September 2025 ahead of the official enactment. In all my years of teaching I’ve had ONE child removed from my class. It was a very, long process with a detailed action plan. The child was extremely violent (shoved a child from behind full force knocking out two of her teeth) one example of many. All that to say in no way, do I want the ability to dismiss children due to a few incidents. The absolute is my issue. I had a student tell my assistant (after being told no) “I’m going to kill you when I come to school tomorrow.” Said 3x. A girl overheard this and told her mother that evening, prompting a call to clarify. Having to tell the mom yes, that child will be in class tomorrow was difficult. Her daughter was too frightened to come
