What are Paras supposed to do?

I'm entering my second year teaching High School Math/SPED, and I have a particular para assigned to 3 of my classes. I had him in one class the previous year, but he doesn't do anything. He typically sits behind a desk on his phone the entire time, and sometimes bothers the students (which I've had to talk to him about). In last year's class, my coteacher running the class wasn't not very organized and rarely had a lesson prepared. I've heard great things about what paras can bring to a class, but I've never seen it in action. And now that I have this guy in half of my classes, I don't know how to incorporate him into my lesson planning. What's expected of him, and what can I have him do to support the class instead of sitting on his phone the whole time? submitted by /u/Ms_Riley_Guprz [link] [comments]

I hate being on call.

I hate attempting to enjoy my time off while the chance of me being called in looms in the background, so I’m not really enjoying my time to begin with. I hate getting called for a new patient when I haven’t even started the first one yet. I hate telling my family and friends I can’t hang out with them or go out for a night on the town because there’s a chance I have to work. I hate how physically and emotionally taxing it is to deal with the urgency of each situation. The extra money isn’t worth it to me and I will never take an on call job again in the future. submitted by /u/ravbee33 [link] [comments]

Managed 30 residents solo, but somehow it’s MY fault I didn't stop a known abusive resident in real time?

I am so beyond done with nursing. I hate what this job has turned me into. I’m managing 30 residents completely on my own on a floor, drowning in med passes, assessments, and total chaos, while leadership sits in their offices passing every problem onto us. We have a cognitively intact resident with an ongoing pattern of being verbally abusive to staff. It’s a well-known issue. She knows exactly what she’s doing. Different floor staff, myself included, have talked to her directly about her behaviour multiple times, and we’ve reported it to leadership over and over. Still nothing gets done. No behaviour plan, no intervention, nothing. While I’m running around the floor, this resident starts yelling at and berating one of our staff members. I was in the middle of my med pass, trying to keep 30 people alive and safe. So no, I didn't drop everything to run over and referee an argument that management should have dealt with months ago. Later on, my team lead finds out about it, walks up to

School starts on Tuesday and I already have parents complaining about school supplies

I teach second and fourth grade at a private school and I have the same students I had last year. So I know the parents really well. I already have a parent calling me and complaining about the amount of school supplies that I’m asking them to get. The parent says that having them get crayons is too babyish. I asked them for three packages of 24 count crayons. He also thinks that three glue sticks is too excessive. As well as three packages of colored pencils. Is this too excessive for a year? Did I go overboard with my school supply list amounts? Obviously there’s more items that I have on the school supply list such as pencils and erasers and scissors, etc., but these are the three things that he complained about. Is fourth grade too old to use crayons? Edit: somebody posted on here that crayons are $.50 each. So I went to walmart.com and saw that Crayola crayons are $.50 each on the website and colored pencils aren’t much more. So three packages of colored pencils and three boxes of

Realizing I’ve been spoiled

HS Math teacher, year 29…when I started at my current school (5 years ago), our teacher workroom/lounge upstairs in my building (where my classroom is) had 2 smaller copiers, a Riso (high-speed copier for large amounts of copies), and a networked printer. One of the small copiers died that year. It’s still in the workroom to this day, but doesn’t work. Okay, no problem. Still have the others. Last year, the remaining small copiers got networked, so it can run print/copy jobs straight from our laptops. Cool. Then this year started… Riso’s gone. Networked printer’s gone. So 10 teachers are sharing a copier that also has to act as a printer. Mixed floor of Math and Social Studies… Being “encouraged” by admin to do more paper/pencil work do students don’t use Google/AI to cheat, so running 100 copies of every worksheet we do. I have a personal printer, but district tech office has disabled teachers’ ability to install them, so I put in a tech ticket for someone to come install it (a week a

APs need to stay in their lane

First week of school. 34-40 kids crammed into classes and an ever-changing roster, some without desks. First time kids are to retrieve their partially graded packets from a stack. Of course, there’s utter chaos finding their packet and getting settled. New AP comes in and asks why I don’t have bins for them. 🙄 Good idea. Let me create a dedicated bin for each of my 275 high school students when we’re on top of each other and I can’t even get desks or copy paper for the shared printer. I need to know…

Which one of you courageous burnt out bastards is going in deep?! Like Code Brown- can’t wash the stank off deep. Probably for the greatest good you never knew existed. In my mind- I imagine them triaging everyone one they can out to a hospital that helps them find a safe haven and sneaks them out by a team of superhero nurses. The Ho distracts ICE agents with BBB (Boobs, Booty, Ballsy talk). The calm one is in the room with the patient spreading their sense of chill vibes. The oldie has quietly packed extra supplies in a get away bag. The charge is quietly directing the pieces. An underground nursing ring smuggling out immigrants. Anyway- thanks for joining my fantasy this morning. In all honesty- I’m not religious but I hope, I pray, I beg of whatever upper powers that be, that one of you silly goose’s (pre Covid), who’s tired as fuck and wants to go out doing something that matters - protecting those who need it most- takes this position. AITA - Student complaining about Notebook Requirement

Hello, I am a first year middle school teacher teaching at a private school. Generally the kids are very pleasant, but I have ran into my first conflict of the year regarding my notebook requirement for class with a student and their parent. For my class, I am requiring students to get a composition colored notebook that represents the period they’re in. I am teaching 6 sections of Spanish with 70+ students overall and assigned colors to each class so it’s more of an efficient way to organize them for grading or in case things get misplaced by students. We are also having a notebook system for our class and every student having the same notebook helps move this structure more efficiently. I thought it would be all fine, but then I get an email. It is from both parent and student saying that I am stripping away their autonomy by taking away their aesthetic choices. Which goes against out school’s values. And that it would be a lot less obtrusive if I just made the rules to be that they

How do I set boundaries as a new hospital worker in a foreign country?

I’m currently on my 5th working day in a hospital, and I’m trying to figure out how to set boundaries without creating problems with my coworkers. I finished medical school, but I’m currently working in a lower position while my qualification is being recognized. My language level is around B1, and almost everything here is new to me — the layout, equipment, materials, computer system and procedures. So far, most of what I’m doing is patient care, changing diapers, emptying urine bags, etc. I’m willing to help with these things, but I feel like that has become almost all I’m being asked to do. What really bothers me is how it happens. I go from room to room asking my coworkers: “Do you need help with anything?” And very often the answer is basically yes — and I get sent to change a diaper or take care of an immobile patient in an isolated room. Meanwhile, I’m asking for help constantly because I’m new. I don’t know the layout properly, I don’t know all the equipment, I don’t know the p

Being a male teacher is hard

This might fall of deaf ears and I feel silly complaining about being a male in this Era, but it is so hard sometimes to be a male teacher in an industry that is predominately female. I'm one of 2 men in my department of 10 and all the ladies are best friends, sharing their lives with each other, bonding everyday while I'm left out of the socializing. I'll probably delete this post tomorrow, but just felt compelled to post this tonight. Ladies, if you have male coworkers, maybe try to reach out to them and invite them into your circle. Cause let me tell you, it can be quite lonely for a guy in this profession. It's very lonely being an adult male in general in America, but tonight I just felt it compounded even more so. Showing some kindness and reaching out to a guy can do incredible wonders to his self esteem. Men rarely get compliments and so the few we receive are so impactful. You ladies have a lot of power over us, and sometimes it really hurts to not be invited to lunches, not h

Teaching is the saddest career

Sorry for the odd and sad title but… As someone that’s taught for close to the last decade, and as someone who never thought I’d stay in education past my first year. I never thought I’d be so conflicted by my career choice. I started teaching as a segue to another career, it was only supposed to be a gap year job. But I started to love it. Before I knew it, it’s been 8 going on 9 years next spring and I don’t know when I’m getting out. I teach high schoolers, and the sad part about teaching is that I get to build rapport and positive relations with them. I get to see them learn, grow, and then move on. They were teenagers that couldn’t care less about school but then one day they walk the stage and graduate. If I’m fortunate I’ll be invited to see them live their lives and find out what they want to do. I’ve had several senior classes come and go now, and I miss them all. But I hope they are all enjoying their lives outside of our school. I teach at a small school where I saw them eve

My hospital started mass firing casual/PRN nurses

My hospital wants casual nurses to work 400 hours each year. Thing is, in my unit, we have 5 casual nurses, and all of them are retired so they only work seasonally. These nurses are invaluable because they pick up sick calls and cover vacations. Other units are similar. Another issue is that shifts are awarded based on seniority, so the most senior nurse gets all the shifts she wants while the least senior one only gets the shifts no one else bid on (which is still important). Last week, 3 of the nurses on my unit received an email that said they've been fired for not picking up 400 hours. One of them was 15 hrs short. All their pre-booked shifts have been removed, leaving us short staffed. The remaining 2 nurses are in their late 60s and will stop picking up soon. Same thing is happening on other units. ICU now has no casual nurses. This baffles me. It costs NOTHING for the employer to keep these causal nurses. These nurses don't get benefits and rarely get OT. The only thing this do

Public School is Improving

We hear it all of the time: public school is in decline. I don't see it. As a teach, our pay is in decline. That one I'll give you. The money going into public education is in decline when we look at it and understand the basics of inflation. Certainly that is true. In part it is true because politicians and those controlling the funds keep shouting that the money is not producing the outcomes, that schools are failing. Teachers are failing. Teachers, however, are not failing. The whole of the job has changed, true, but that does not equate to failure. We have students in school today that would have been institutionalized before 1990. We have a far more diverse population. We have a completely different spectrum of socio-economics. We have a vastly larger number of students in two income homes with no one at home when the kids get there or even in the mornings. The language shift nationally is vast. Our clientele is completely different. We are also teaching more and more complex thin

Communal Supplies

I'm a first year teacher and just finished up with my open house. My school has a very lovely admin team and PTA which supplies us all sorts of free supplies. Despite that, we still have a supply list as we rely on donations and so teachers can have a backlog in case of additional students or damaged supplies. I teach ELA and so many parents came to open house with lovely personalized materials with their students names plastered all over them. With the structure of the class, theres really no way we can logically use them. All students are given identical journals, pencil pouches, and plain folders to lessen the focus on having expensive school supplies and now I'm not sure what to do. Their cubbies are already so small and the supplies they need is the bare necessities as everything else is communally shared. I really don't wanna get yelled at by parent by not letting their kids use their 7 different sparkly folders but it would really make me a lot of extra work having to repack stu

I cried hysterically and even wanted to hit myself to make the thoughts of the classroom go away. I scared my mother and she took me to the Doctor Who gave me a week off, but I feel so pathetic because school just started. Was offered a dream job, but already am signed for 26’/27’ school year. Help.

I’ll try to keep this short. Yesterday, I was offered my dream job. A full time private tennis coaching gig that will match my pay and benefits for a 1 year contract. I don’t know what to do. I started teaching 24’/25’ school year as a K-12 PE teacher on a one year contract. Last year, they mid year took away the one year contract and moved me to one through the end of this year. I did not sign a new contract, they simply moved me. I never liked my job, and this was my last year regardless before leaving this specific district and moving states. I don’t know what to do. I obviously want to take the new job, but do not want to screw over my staff or students. I am the sole PE teacher at the K-12. What would you guys do? How would you navigate the decision? My hospital had only phlebotomist for the entire evening

I work at a level 1 trauma center with several buildings, hundreds of patients, including those with timed labs. Yesterday evening, our charge forwarded us an email with a message from the hospital that there would only be one on-duty phlebotomist until 10 PM. I don't even know if the other people showed up because I was day shift. We have up to 800 beds. That is hundreds for one woman. Apparently hospital admin is trying to phase out the phlebotomy department so that they can save money. No though at all to how our workload gets doubled for the same salary, and we get less time for patient care. It's not like the doctor is going to be any less snappy when I tell him I have 10 other tubes to send down the damn chute. Extremely anxious returning to work after 2 months off

I had two months off of work due to getting bariatric surgery and having some complications. I’m still not 100% better, I can’t really eat anything solid without severe nausea and stomach upset (I’m working with my doctor on this). I’m also tired all the time (that could be bc Ive been off my arthritis medication too tho). For reference I work on an oncology unit, nights. I’m just incredibly anxious about returning. I’m actually sitting in the break room prior to starting my shift rn, and I’m so anxious. Walking through the unit to the break room was really difficult. Knowing what I’m going to be dealing with for 12 hours straight makes my stomach sick. I don’t know how I’ll do it. I recently got this kid switched to one of my classes. He stinks really bad, I’m talking armpit smell, not any another type of stench. Students avoid sitting next to him. The issue comes when he left the class one day and I sprayed with deodorizer to get rid of the smell. While I was doing this, a student came into my classroom and laughed. She told me that she knew why I was spraying the room and proceeded to tell me that he is aware he smells. Apparently, both teachers and students have told him. Not only told him, but OFFERED HIM DEODORANT. She says he has refused every single time. I’m not sure what to do. I’m new and in adult school, so I do not have a relationship with the nurses, I don’t even have their number. I also feel like he is going to feel targeted if I put a hygiene basket in my room

Attorney to Teacher job switch?

Hey all! I am a licensed attorney doing legal aid work and thinking about making a career switch in a year or two. I like parts of my current role, but have always enjoyed teaching. It was the career I wanted until I was talked out of it as a teenager. Any attorneys-turned-elementary/middle/high school teachers out there? I’d love to hear about your journey!! submitted by /u/BeezKneez4784 [link] [comments]

Was ATI always 900+ dollars a semester???

So for this semester, our resources are, for the most part, going to come from ATI. Assignments, textbooks, all that jazz. However, my brother who graduated 2-3 years ago paid 300 dollars for the same program at the same school. I understand a price increase, but having over 3x the original price on top of tuition is quite a bit! Does anyone know if that’s the average price nowadays? I cannot find anything related to price history online, only for the teas tests. submitted by /u/Mental_Blueberry4563 [link] [comments]

Bob the Ant

Today, I was modeling for my kids how to annotate, and an ant wandered onto the paper as I was highlighting. "Mister! The ant!" "That's Bob the ant, he wants to learn how to read too." I drew a circle around Bob the ant. "Mister! You trapped him." Bob walks out of the circle. "Bob is free!" "Bob reads at his own pace." And then, I turned off my camera and the kids yelled bye to Bob. submitted by /u/Consistent-Row-9551 [link] [comments]

Soon-to-be formerly stoner new grad

Hey nurses! So I’m graduating in December with my BSN. I looooove safely indulging in a little marijuana after a long day, and have been enjoying it all summer but have just stopped (for the fourth time) for school / my first job etc. Today I’m looking for reassurance from stoner nurses that this life isn’t over for me, that one day I can be a real nurse and come home to a real blunt. As for now, I live in Texas, and know I can’t indulge again until I’m working and stable in a state in which the plant is legal. But tell me it’s possible! I miss it already and am mourning the loss. It may sound stupid or like I’m dependent on it, but I don’t have much else going on in my life (except school) and it definitely helped take the edge off. Also, not interested in any anti-weed advice. I’m fully aware of all pros and cons as well at the stakes should I get caught using in relation to the nursing field. submitted by /u/lowesandtoes [link] [comments]
