I’m a second grade teacher in Texas. This year’s PD was intense. We were trained on a new math curriculum and the trainer was absolutely insufferable😭. She was talking to us as if we asked to be there, and as if we asked for tips on how to teach. Ma’am, I’m there to be shown how to navigate the curriculum and what it offers. This lady was going on about how much children are dying to learn and that we are doing them a disservice if we do not follow the curriculum verbatim. There was a point in the work day that she was telling us how to talk to the students and how much they need to move around. We already know that. “Guys ☹️ the kids NEED to move around okay ☹️ please give them that. Let them get up and do a movement activity after.” Idk, maybe I’m just a negative Nancy. But, if wanted to learn about classroom management and student engagement, I would’ve signed up for that. Just ranting because I’m annoyed and frustrated. My district calendar is out for the next two years and our Christmas break begins on Christmas Eve in 26/27 and 27/28 school years. This year we get 7 school days off and next year, only 6. I’m sure they have their reasons, but how are people supposed to travel to visit family if the first available travel days is Christmas freaking Eve? Maybe I’m just too old school. Even as a kid, we’ve always had two weeks or more. Is this the new norm? I spend my weekdays alone a lot, and while the peace and quiet is nice, I find that I get almost depressed because of my boredom and isolation. Sure, I’ve got my dog, and my husband when he comes home. I’ve got some little hobbies—but not things I can fill hours with day in and day out. My friends all work. My few teacher friends live far from me & are usually busy with their kids or camp or travel. Plus the weather has absolutely sucked in the northeast this year and I’m especially grumpy because of that. It’s keeping me indoors too much. So I’m just curious… does anyone else struggle to fill their time? So we had a beginning-of-year professional development with our new campus department head for ELA. She told us we are doing a campus-wide SHIFT from fiction reading to focus on nonfiction because “all the research shows that nonfiction is better than fiction, because fiction is just for fun and nonfiction is where you learn things.” I asked her “….better how?…” And her response was “it’s just better! Hey All! I really need to vent. I mentioned here before I’m a state certified teach with a masters degree. I’m in Florida and we recently had budget cuts. I was one of those cut. But teachers kept DO NOT have certifications and are not nearly as qualified as I am. These are all rhetorical but why was I cut? What did I do wrong? Was I just not liked or didn’t have the “connections” others had. Apparently my spot was posted after they dropped me. Before you ask no I wasn’t “fired” because to my knowledge I did nothing wrong. I really do feel like I was dropped due to being too “expensive” or because I didn’t have the “connections” others had. I know doing this won’t help me but it’s taking everything in me to not send a message to those who still have their jobs despite not having qualifications. Yes, it is linked to my disability this is not an ongoing issue, it was circumstances that came up in my life that I needed to step back and address before my health took a turn for the worse. Checking in for thoughts on the situation... Just met a student who will be joining my class on Monday, and their father was with them. Turns out he's a highly respected local tattoo artist. We exchanged Instagram accounts. I have been wanting to get more ink, and this feels like a great connection, but I also want to avoid the appearance of preferential treatment. Based on what I can gather, the student is very motivated by my subject area, and should do just fine in the course without any special treatment. Would it be unethical of me to get tattoos from the student's father? Would it be best to wait until next semester (after the child is no longer enrolled in my course) before getting tattoos from him? Just curious to see. So for context, I teach taekwondo. I know this sub is mainly for actual teachers but I feel like this issue has been universal over every form of teaching. But, over the last like 8ish years of teaching, we've seen a sharp decline in student behavior and just basic skills and knowledge. Our school teaches 4 year olds and up. We keep them all divided by rank and age. So, 4-6 year olds are in our junior program, 7-11 are in our kids program and 12+ are in our teen and adult program. We also specialize in dealing with kids with ADHD and autism. Most of the instructor team, including me, have some learning disability like ADHD so it's easier for us to relate to the kids and help them. Another bit of info I need to give is that from 2020 to early 2022, we were kind of closed off as a school since Covid was still a major issue and we're in a full contact sport. So our admin gets really pushy with us doing school based slides. This year it’s really slop - due to admin turnover. But it dawned on me: teachers don’t get IEP data until ~2 weeks in. Services start day 1. So if we teach content, we’re out of compliance. If we teach individual teacher based content. We’re out of compliance. But if we do a bunch of kumbaya for ~2 weeks that’s school based, they can claim content wasn’t taught and we’re in compliance. Kinda like how stores stock while open to save in FTE. Of course on the surface it looks inclusive and we’re getting kids back into the swing, but right now they’re figuring out caseloads and where their students are. hello everyone! As this school year begins, I am faced with a dilemma that I truly thought would never be an issue but it has become quite the issue quickly, prayer. I’m a teacher in Idaho where they passed a new law that a moment of silence must be taken either at the begging or end of the school day. I live with a heavy LDS community, where my students are either in the community or rebelling against the community. That also means I have parents on both sides who are rather upset by this rule or love it, which to me, is fine! What my concern is that a parent wants myself and others make sure everyone is taking this new law seriously, but honestly I don’t care. I just want my students to be respectful to all beliefs in the world, and to not just be a bunch of buttheads. It’s not the job, it’s me. Even if behaviour were perfect and the workload so small as to be negligible, the job would still only be tolerable rather than something I enjoyed. I’ve tried to convince myself that I like the job, making consistent and considerable effort for it and even going above and beyond at certain periods of my career. But I’ve been lying to myself. The reality is that I find the work BORING. Interacting with large groups of people is draining, and I have zero interest in kids. I graduated college in 2024 and originally planned to teach after graduation. That didn’t go as planned, so I worked at my local library for a year and just finished a year long internship. Throughout that time, my goal was to still move into teaching, but there aren’t many ELA positions available in my area. When I was trying to get pregnant (secretly) my mother in law told me that once I have the baby, going back to work will “feel like a vacation” in comparison to being home with a baby. My brother in law said the same thing. They agreed that working is way easier than being home with a baby. Now, she used to work as a secretary in a quiet lawyer’s office. He works in a corporate bank setting. I’m in a building with 2000 feral teenagers. I don’t have a quiet desk job where I can sip my coffee, answer the phone, hop on Zoom meetings, and have daily meetings with other adults. We KNOW what teaching is like. I have been married to a teacher for over 20 years, and I’m hoping to hear from teachers I know teaching is emotionally demanding. My spouse gives so much to students every day that by the time they get home, they’re often completely drained. Many evenings they’re so exhausted that there’s no conversation. Then the next day starts all over again, and before I know it, the entire week has passed and sometimes 2 weeks without much of a conversation. I have tried to encourage debriefing but my spouse doesn’t like sharing anything that happened in their day. After much communication my spouse has said it’s because their day has too many questions already it’s impossible to unwind or debrief. What I’m struggling with is that, after years of trying to be the one who carries the emotional load at home, I’m exhausted too. It can feel lonely. This isn’t meant to criticize teachers. Link to original post at the bottom. I was placed on Paid Admin Leave on April 24 pending an investigation into unprofessional conduct. The complaints came from the families of three sixth grade boys that frequently disrupt class (refuse to get into line, come in loud and do not go to their seats, tilting in chairs, hats on in class, talking loudly, wandering the classroom). I followed procedures by writing them up, contacting home and sending them to the office unlike my colleagues who stopped communicating home since it didn’t improve the students’ behavior. In my eyes, the complaints to the district were their retaliation for me contacting them about their children’s behavior. I was interviewed by the independent investigator on June 3. I received the investigative findings on July 27. I received my “Return to Work” on August 3. My only disciplinary consequence is a letter of reprimand in my file. We start school back next week in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. At PD this week they told us that our district was instituting a hard cap of 120 minutes per day on Chromebooks. The problem is that all of our middle school (6-8) science curriculum is online. We have no physical textbooks or lab workbooks to give the students and as far as I know none have been ordered. I'm concerned because the reading and practice problems are currently only available through the online platform. I'm not sure how to bridge the gap between the materials being online and only having one box of paper to last until November to split between over 200 students. Also, our admin is very adamant that we can only use teaching materials from curriculum that the district has purchased. Has anyone else successfully navigated this problem? Hi everyone! As the title states, this is about my class size for this upcoming year. As of right now I have 27 first grade students (the number is still climbing each day). No teacher aide as well. We start school next week Monday. I have never had a class size over 22 students and even that many 6/7 year olds can be tough. I’m wanting advice from any other teachers who have experienced such a large class size of littles. In addition, I have a good load of students with IEPS and 504s. Some of which are behavioral. A small charter school in Big City, Texas. My school keeps hiring people that aren’t certified (apparently a charter can get away with it). Some of my new coworkers are 22-25 years old. But even some older folks can’t read properly and can barely write a coherent sentence. For instance, I asked my new co-teachers to add information about themselves to an intro slide. They either misspelled words or capitalized what doesn’t need to be capitalized (and vice versa). And we teach English Language Arts and Reading… I’m sure this is not the last instance I will encounter this year. How do I go about this?? For the last two years, we’ve gifted our daughter’s Pre K teachers the Our Class Is a Family book (so I could sneak the preference sheets inside. It also helped me figure out what extra school supplies to get.) We also gave them a small flower bouquet so I could tuck Visa gift cards into it that they could use for coffee, classroom supplies, or whatever they needed. I’m not at all trying to be a kiss ass or a Pinterest mom, just kind to someone who will be spending a lot of time nurturing my child. Mine is that my daily prep period is after lunch and admin doesn't care if we're on campus for our prep. So I have a 90 minute break daily. I'm a retired band director, now a substitute for a small rural district. I just saw a teacher whom I've worked with in Life Skills and we were exchanging pleasantries about the beginning of school next week. That got me remembering how a couple of years ago I was subbing for one of the aides for several days in her classroom THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL and how I came down with COVID immediately afterwards. I didn't immediately connect the dots until much later. If one hasn't been around people especially kids for a while then you lose that immunity. Plus, if you teach the younger kids then you know how touchy-feely they can be. I remember going home one day and jokingly telling my husband, "I've been slimed." Hi, I have been feeling really discouraged lately. Any time I tell people that I’m a teacher, it just gets no respect at all. People say “oh wow I could never do that” or “oh you’re a teacher :/“. Back again for more advice as a new teacher! I’ll be setting up my classroom next week, and I can’t help but feel like I’m missing some obvious essentials on my shopping list so i’m curious what people would recommend getting. My school gave me a 150$ Amazon budget and I asked for a variety of things I can’t get in physical stores, like fluorescent light covers, posters, a specific pencil sharpener I wanted - odds and ends mostly. As the title says, I've been at this school for a while. For the past several years, we have been using a co-teaching model, with great success, that pairs ELA with History. I teach three classes of ELA with the intensive support of my co-teacher and I give intensive support for the three History classes my partner teaches. We have aligned our units of study to compliment each other and I am able to do deep-dives into informational reading/writing with my small groups during History class while connecting it all back to ELA. Since we started this model, our students' scores have far outshined the rest of our state. It's been amazing. After 8 interviews, I finally landed a position at my dream school. I had been substituting there as much as I could for the past two years when home from college. The staff were always so friendly and students began to recognize me in the hallway from being there so often. Broad field certified in my state. Have taught Environmental Science, Chemistry, and Biology, and interviewed twice for the position. I found out they hired someone who graduated this past May… with a bachelor’s in English. Before anyone asks, yes, it was for the same middle/high school science position. A friend of mine in the department saw it, used a few other clues in the poster's history to figure out exactly which colleague it was, and reported it to admin. I wish the general public would understand this when railing against teachers , making videos saying how teachers 'get paid during the summer' calling teaching "part time", or making the, at this point, required videos about school supplies, as well as pushing back against any raises for teachers on levies on ballots. I only started teaching after Covid and what I was told was lockers went away because of Covid (doesn’t make super sense to me, were lockers super spreaders?) and have never come back. first year teacher who has never had experience with a class over 17 students before. my biggest class is 34. last period of the day and 7th graders. today was the first day of school and i already moved someone’s seat in that class. is it just because it’s the first day?? i was being talked over WHILE going over some of my expectations for the first time. i’m genuinely not even sure how to handle a class this big when there’s more than a couple students being disruptive. submitted by /u/127everywhere [link] [comments]
Year 27 started on Monday. Go back through my previous posts here. Especially if you’re a new(ish) teacher. There might be a few things there that you might find useful. Or you might think I’m full of shit. Whatever. Anywho. I’ve decided that this year I’m going to be all business. I’m going to work, put on the show from 8:40-4:10, and go home. I’m not going to wake kids up that fall asleep or contact parents if a kid is failing. Only in the event of behavior being truly atrocious am I going to bother to reach out to a parent. To the new teachers, I offer this advice: You need to have separation between work and not work. Mr. Zilla is a character I play at work from 8:40am-4:10pm. Outside of that, I’m Jewzilla, or to my closest friends just plain Zilla. I have a mononym. Like Cher. Or Madonna. Or Bono. Hi all, I’m a highschool teacher planning a unit for my grade 9 courses next year where we read AITA style posts, look for key evidence for both sides, determine our judgement, and write about how/why we choose who was the “asshole” Obviously I’ll come up with another word for “asshole” but you get my point.
