When Jon Ketler, founder of the Tacoma School of the Arts, passed away recently, Getting Smart contributor Chris Unger sat down to capture what made him extraordinary. This tribute is more than a remembrance. It is a masterclass in what visionary school design actually looks like when one person decides to stop waiting for permission and start building. Education leaders who have ever wondered whether a single individual can change a system will find both proof and inspiration here. Districts Don’t Need Another New Model. They Need Systems That Build Them.

What if the next breakthrough in school design did not require a new building, a charter, or a pilot program imported from somewhere else? At Hidden Valley Middle School in Escondido, a public microschool operating inside a traditional campus has cut suspensions by 60 percent and reduced chronic absenteeism by 12 percentage points, schoolwide. This piece by Dr. Katie Martin and Dr. Devin Vodicka explores how California districts are building the internal capacity to generate and spread learner-centered models, and why that shift from showcase schools to generative systems may be the most important move in education reform right now. ‘The Kids Simply Cannot Handle It’: Why New York Students Are Reading Fewer Books

MORE THAN A DECADE AGO, Queens teacher Nicole Radosti Pipia’s fifth- and sixth-grade students seemed to love reading novels in school. “The Giver” by Lois Lowry was prized for its mystery. “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio taught them about kindness and acceptance. “Freak the Mighty” by Rodman Philbrick showed them the power of friendship. Now, she said, they don’t read any. Instead, students often spend class time reading excerpts and short stories to better prepare them for the sorts of questions they’d encounter on standardized exams. The demands of her school’s reading program leave no room to study novels, the English teacher said. “We’re told that we cannot deviate from the program, and if you have to do the program, there’s literally no time,” Pipia said. Another New York City middle school teacher, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation, said her school taught novels before the pandemic. Now, “it can be done, but not with the constraints placed on us as teachers,” she

NYTimes: How Big Tech Captured American Schools

One humid afternoon in the summer of 2025, representatives from Microsoft were waiting as some 200 teachers trooped into a conference hall in downtown Manhattan. The educators were there for a workshop on the school technology of the moment: artificial intelligence chatbots. The Microsoft team gave a presentation on their Copilot chatbot and asked the teachers to practice using it for tasks like generating emails to parents and customizing lesson plans. Microsoft instructors also screened an A.I. explainer video that their Minecraft Education division had produced for children. The animated clip, based on the company’s blockbuster world-building game, featured a cheerful narrator and a cute Minecraft duck. Even if some schoolchildren weren’t old enough to use A.I., one of the Microsoft workshop leaders told the teachers in attendance, at least they could start learning about it. As a journalist covering technology in schools, I had observed similar workshops for teachers and students t

It's a lot of fun! I have led professional development sessions on this topic, participating teachers love the instructional value, students are engaged in exciting, authentic collaboration, and former students often tell me it's something they remember fondly. Does anyone else feel the tide shifting back toward appreciating the value of *knowledge* in education?

Somehow, while we were sleepwalking our way through flipped-classroom and learning-styles fads, the word "memorization” became a dirty word in U.S. education. This was probably misguided. We allowed knowledge to almost seem like a *bad* thing or a waste of time that should otherwise be spent on purely "critical thinking" and "making connections" between ideas. The truth is that you can't make connections without having that knowledge live in your head first. You can’t think critically about science if you don’t know much science. ChatGPT isn't going to get you through a political debate or a nuanced cultural conversation if the core historical facts aren't yet cemented in your brain cells. Call me crazy, but it feels like the tide may finally be shifting back toward appreciating the value of knowledge. It is ironically the fear of AI-driven "cognitive offloading" that is actually helping the pendulum shift back toward the realization of how important knowledge is to education. All it t
