Our hospital system is currently in the works to become a "Pathway" hospital. It sounds like a Magnet designation alternative. I volunteered to be the unit rep for this and I really am not a joiner-cheerleader. What I am is a skeptic. I have been through too many jobs with the promise of a program that will bring more power to the staff and make it an eglitarian dream with tons of staffing on demand and a more shared workload. Can anyone who has experienced this give me the full story? How has it helped your staff? Has it done anything at all or worse than nothing? Two of my former students are now teachers that work with me at my school. One of them has a child who is my student this year, and he has another coming up behind that one. I also have ties to several other teachers - I have mentored or taught their kids, or mentored the teachers themselves as rookies. It's wild. For all that goes wrong in education, I'm so proud of the students who were massive pains in the ass who became beloved teachers working with me today. I’m currently marking year 10 assessment tasks for an elective class and so far 4 students out of a class of 20 have used AI to complete their assessment. 1 I already knew had because she was copying and pasting it from Chat GPT in front of me during class. I’m feeling really deflated about it. What’s the point of marking assessments when the students themselves don’t try. I had a huge conversation about their use of AI in the past and I just don’t understand why they rely on it so heavily for a class they have chosen. Is anyone else feeling deflated or am I focusing on the negatives? Is there a way to stop this for my future classes? This will be my 11th year teaching, 8th year at this Title I school. I’ve had good years and bad. I have a tendency to spiral after bad years. Last year was bad. My district adopted all new curriculum, plus my building was piloting another, and I started having issues with my team (I’ve made two previous posts about them so I won’t elaborate). I was also pregnant. I‘d say I have imposter syndrome, but I don’t think that’s the right word because I’m fairly certain my teammates find me incompetent. I just have so much anxiety - about dealing with my team, managing all the curriculum again, juggling motherhood, and generally just sucking. I feel like I definitely dropped the ball on some things last year that make me look bad (mainly students who were struggling and I couldn’t get their scores up). When I was a student I accidentally gave my patient denture glue to brush her teeth instead of tooth paste LOL. When she said it feels sticky i immediately caught on that I gave her denture glue!!!!!! 32M single nurse who works inpatient 12 hour shifts. Live alone. Looking to get 1 or possibly 2 small dogs. Breeds that are not super energetic requiring multiple walks per day. Work 3x 12's and pick up an extra 1 OT shift every other week. Out of the house at 6 AM and return around 8:30 PM. Non-work days would be a non-issue. However, on work days, my plan was to go for a 30-40 min walk in the morning prior to work and then 20-30 mins after work. While I'm at work, have a dog walker or parents come by around 1 PM to spend time with them for an hour. For dog owners who live alone and can weigh in, do you think I'm "doing enough" on my work days for them or do you think i'd need to make more accommodations? Despite REALLY wanting 1 or 2 small dogs I do not want to be selfish and not provide them with the best possible life that I could. I'm going into my 5th year teaching (elementary), and we have new admin this year. We have Meet the Teacher the night before school! We've always had it the week before school starts, and I'm genuinely irritated as now I feel like I won't be able to relax the evening before school. We tried to fight it, but they're adamant in keeping it that way. I'm not going to let it ruin my week, but I just don't understand the reasoning for this. I unfortunately dislocated my shoulder recently on my dominant side and for lack of better words completely fucked the whole thing up. I found out today I’m going to need surgery and I’m expecting a 6 month minimum recovery time where I’ll be pretty limited with how much I can do with said arm. I just lost my bedside nursing job as I hadn’t been there long, didn’t qualify for FMLA or short term disability, and they were not able to accommodate my injury (which is understandable for a bedside nursing job). My question is, what can I even do? I can’t imagine being a clinic nurse right now, because although it’s not as heavy as bedside you still most definitely need 2 functioning arms. I feel like I’m limited to desk jobs or remote but those are hard to come by. I’ve been looking nonstop at jobs since I lost my job, because I’m extremely stressed about finances now. So I moved to a new school and I’ve been putting together my new classroom. The prior teacher left A LOT of stuff. Now I don’t mean items owned by the school such as chemistry glassware, laptop chargers or textbooks, but personal items (baseball bat, jacket, old faculty id, baseball mit) and a surplus of school stuff (significant amounts of thumbtacks, used pens, decorating trim, old sewing/embroidering supplies, pencil top erasers, paper binders, old paintbrushes, glitter, etc. ) I mentioned this to the principal asking if I should give it to the supply closet. His response was that they had excess and to just pitch all of it. I’m thinking about taking the stuff to Goodwill or maybe putting the items in a yard sale ?? For one yearly eval, I met the 5% max raise evaluation but I was only given 4% because i wasn't allowed to be given a percentage point increase of 2% points from my previous years evaluation (which was a 3% even though I met the criteria for the 5%). I had consistently stayed late for work, and averaged about 40-50 hours of call a week for years. If that doesn't qualify as exceeds then I don't know what else does. Honestly if you show up for your shift at least consistently and have enough to keep your mental health, physical health and home life health intact. This should constitute a 5% evaluation on it's own. That honestly changed somthing in me. Now, I still do my best at work, but, I don't think I really care about evals? Just some thoughts here. Idk if anyone remembered me but I was the nurse who posted the comparison chart between my old hospital and new hospital with a significantly better pay. I’m back again. Key points: I only get 2 weeks (6 shifts) orientation at the new hospital. I have 2 years ICU, 1 year OR experience in the Philippines. Migrated to California. 8 months day shift tele experience. Told them all about my background. Was honest and said my ICU experience is from the PH. They said it’s okay, you will learn. No experience in epic and pyxis and other fancy ICU equipment. I got hired as night shift ICU. Day 1 orientation, I told my preceptor my background, but she was pretty much hands off with me. Taught me once, then expected me to be completely proficient with it. Struggled with epic so much. Didn’t take my breaks so I won’t be behind on my flowsheets. At the end of shift I asked her for feedback and studied on my days off. I was off for 3 days. I’m a second grade teacher in Texas. This year’s PD was intense. We were trained on a new math curriculum and the trainer was absolutely insufferable😭. She was talking to us as if we asked to be there, and as if we asked for tips on how to teach. Ma’am, I’m there to be shown how to navigate the curriculum and what it offers. This lady was going on about how much children are dying to learn and that we are doing them a disservice if we do not follow the curriculum verbatim. There was a point in the work day that she was telling us how to talk to the students and how much they need to move around. We already know that. “Guys ☹️ the kids NEED to move around okay ☹️ please give them that. Let them get up and do a movement activity after.” Idk, maybe I’m just a negative Nancy. I start and retry next January (2027) and need help figuring out what I can do to retain and maintain my information/competency In general in the next few months. Hi I’m going to start my nursing school in 20 days and at the same time, I am going to work as a PCT (apprentice) at a hospital. I have had a disc bulged due to an accident three years back when I was 17. I had a bad rest of three months which helped me stop my pain. It took me at least four months to recover. Since then, I have not had any episode of pain. But sometimes there is muscle tension whenever I left something heavy and to mention, I usually avoid lifting heavy things. I have been doing my nursing pre requisites for one and a half year. I think that will go in waste. My parents are not happy at all because they have invested a lot of money on those courses. I’m very scared right now. I’ve not been sleeping from last three days when I got to know in the hospital orientation that I will have to lift patients which I knew I will have to, but I was not very sure about that. Just ranting because I’m annoyed and frustrated. My district calendar is out for the next two years and our Christmas break begins on Christmas Eve in 26/27 and 27/28 school years. This year we get 7 school days off and next year, only 6. I’m sure they have their reasons, but how are people supposed to travel to visit family if the first available travel days is Christmas freaking Eve? Maybe I’m just too old school. I spend my weekdays alone a lot, and while the peace and quiet is nice, I find that I get almost depressed because of my boredom and isolation. Sure, I’ve got my dog, and my husband when he comes home. I’ve got some little hobbies—but not things I can fill hours with day in and day out. My friends all work. My few teacher friends live far from me & are usually busy with their kids or camp or travel. Plus the weather has absolutely sucked in the northeast this year and I’m especially grumpy because of that. It’s keeping me indoors too much. So I’m just curious… does anyone else struggle to fill their time? So we had a beginning-of-year professional development with our new campus department head for ELA. She told us we are doing a campus-wide SHIFT from fiction reading to focus on nonfiction because “all the research shows that nonfiction is better than fiction, because fiction is just for fun and nonfiction is where you learn things.” I asked her “….better how?…” And her response was “it’s just better! Hey All! I really need to vent. I mentioned here before I’m a state certified teach with a masters degree. I’m in Florida and we recently had budget cuts. I was one of those cut. But teachers kept DO NOT have certifications and are not nearly as qualified as I am. These are all rhetorical but why was I cut? What did I do wrong? Was I just not liked or didn’t have the “connections” others had. Apparently my spot was posted after they dropped me. Before you ask no I wasn’t “fired” because to my knowledge I did nothing wrong. I really do feel like I was dropped due to being too “expensive” or because I didn’t have the “connections” others had. Yes, it is linked to my disability this is not an ongoing issue, it was circumstances that came up in my life that I needed to step back and address before my health took a turn for the worse. Checking in for thoughts on the situation... Just met a student who will be joining my class on Monday, and their father was with them. Turns out he's a highly respected local tattoo artist. We exchanged Instagram accounts. I have been wanting to get more ink, and this feels like a great connection, but I also want to avoid the appearance of preferential treatment. Based on what I can gather, the student is very motivated by my subject area, and should do just fine in the course without any special treatment. Would it be unethical of me to get tattoos from the student's father? Would it be best to wait until next semester (after the child is no longer enrolled in my course) before getting tattoos from him? Just curious to see. So for context, I teach taekwondo. I know this sub is mainly for actual teachers but I feel like this issue has been universal over every form of teaching. But, over the last like 8ish years of teaching, we've seen a sharp decline in student behavior and just basic skills and knowledge. Our school teaches 4 year olds and up. We keep them all divided by rank and age. So, 4-6 year olds are in our junior program, 7-11 are in our kids program and 12+ are in our teen and adult program. We also specialize in dealing with kids with ADHD and autism. Most of the instructor team, including me, have some learning disability like ADHD so it's easier for us to relate to the kids and help them. Another bit of info I need to give is that from 2020 to early 2022, we were kind of closed off as a school since Covid was still a major issue and we're in a full contact sport. So a few months ago when I worked in the hospital I had an elderly patient and his daughter, her husband and kids were apparently a ‘barefoot family’ so they never wore shoes. They would walk all around the hospital with no shoes even tho I told them there was regularly feces on the floor not to mention all the germs and god knows what. But they would refuse to wear them. I remember walking behind them once and could see their feet were so dirty. They would even walk from their house with no shoes on along sideawalks and roads with no shoes then trot all of that around the hospital. Anyway I’m in a new job and the daughter came in today for an appointment. Not with me but I saw her and she still had no shoes on. But we are in a very deprived area and when I’m walking in to work the entire area is filled with dirty needles, used condoms, vomit. So our admin gets really pushy with us doing school based slides. This year it’s really slop - due to admin turnover. But it dawned on me: teachers don’t get IEP data until ~2 weeks in. Services start day 1. So if we teach content, we’re out of compliance. If we teach individual teacher based content. We’re out of compliance. But if we do a bunch of kumbaya for ~2 weeks that’s school based, they can claim content wasn’t taught and we’re in compliance. Kinda like how stores stock while open to save in FTE. Of course on the surface it looks inclusive and we’re getting kids back into the swing, but right now they’re figuring out caseloads and where their students are. hello everyone! As this school year begins, I am faced with a dilemma that I truly thought would never be an issue but it has become quite the issue quickly, prayer. I’m a teacher in Idaho where they passed a new law that a moment of silence must be taken either at the begging or end of the school day. I live with a heavy LDS community, where my students are either in the community or rebelling against the community. That also means I have parents on both sides who are rather upset by this rule or love it, which to me, is fine! What my concern is that a parent wants myself and others make sure everyone is taking this new law seriously, but honestly I don’t care. I just want my students to be respectful to all beliefs in the world, and to not just be a bunch of buttheads. I work in a SNF and I’m a PT employee. I also started there in Feb. I’m fresh out of school- this is my first nursing job. Haven’t taken a vacation in years between school/mom life etc. so me and my husband book a 7 day vacation end of October. I went in to request off and scheduling tells me I’m not entitled to a vacation. I told them I could still work my shifts the same week of vacation (going away W-W), do doubles etc. still no. HR tells me I’d have to see if I have any PTO, use it and then find my own coverage. Or not go on the vacation. Said they just lost 6 nurses this week and they can’t tell me what my schedule will look like 3 months from now. I really wanted to just say i won’t be there regardless but instead I said ok and politely thanked him for the information. I’m just regretting even saying anything. I should’ve just played sick. My school requires that we receive a TB test every summer and submit it to Verified Credentials to attend clinical’s. They like it to be within 12 months of the last TB test. I received my TB test on 7/8/26 and assumed I’d be within the 12 month window because I had gotten one 7/8/25. I got an email from the lady who oversees our Verified Credentials documents stating that I needed to get a new note from my doctor because it didn’t have the doctor’s office name on the note. I reached out to my doctor’s office & the nurse said there was issues with them documenting the TB test, so I’d have to come back in & get another one. As frustrating as it was (I live 2 hours away from home… where my doctor’s office is) I agreed & got my TB test on July 29th of this year & submitted it. The entire time this was happening, I was in contact with the lady from my school. Despite it being past the 12 months at this point, she said she’d approve it for me. I paint murals for a living, mostly big outdoor walls, and I got pulled into a project doing artwork for a pediatric unit and now a couple hallways in a larger hospital. I'm disgusted. I'm shocked. We had 2 shifts of after hours nurses, swing shift and noc shift. Not anymore... Technically they offered us all a position, for a huge pay cut and way more hours. The offered position is salary and requires 105 hours per pay period, 15 hour shifts for 7 days in a row. The offered salary is $119k. When we calculated it out we would be making $20/hr less so obviously we are all quitting. I feel so bad for my manager, being demoted in front of the entire team. She is an LPN and they only want RN managers, which makes no sense for this fiscally motivated greed monger. Do I get unemployment? Do I slam them on GlassDoor?
