I’m a 3rd year teacher, and teaching has made me grow as a person. Before teaching, I hated being judged or disliked by others to the point that it would make physically sick, I was a huge people pleaser, and I was easily angered or frustrated by minor inconveniences. I also had terrible time management and would show up late to everything. During my first year teaching, I would wake up and have anxiety attacks bc I was so nervous to teach. I started going to therapy regularly after that. Going to therapy and sticking to teaching has helped me expose myself to uncertainty and stress and I’ve gradually gotten so much better at handling it in my personal life, not just my work life. And my time management has gotten better too! I’m actually showing up early to places now! It was so rough at the beginning, but I’m glad that I’ve stayed because I don’t know if I would have grown as quickly as I have. I know teaching isn’t always sunshine and rainbows and there are some serious cons to this
TLDR below. I've been a med/surg RN for almost 5 years now working on the same unit since a new grad, but I've hated it since day 1 and I have been beyond burnt out. I work nightshift weekends only, and because I signed up for the weekend contract the pay is excellent ($39/hr base + $7/hr night weekend shift diff + $10/hr weekend contract). I am single, live alone, and support myself... so this money has really helped me thrive by not having to worry about $/bills because all of it gets paid with tons left over every month. But man has this job sucked the absolute soul out of me. My anxiety seems to have gotten worse year over year, I dread going into work to the point of tears, I am a zombie on my days off despite having a consistent schedule (3 on 4 off), and I just HATE direct patient care now. We also float so much and I'm so sick of going to other units without proper training and getting shit assignments, and it doesn't help our hospital took away our float pay a few months ago.
Wife is a pre-k teacher entering year 32. She has not enjoyed the job in some time but financially it made sense to keep working. She told me this week she just can’t do it. Her new class has 2 4 year olds that are not potty trained and she was told last year it was her job to clean them up. (This is a non ESE classroom) On top of that she has a nightmare child who will need a lot of work to settle down. This precious angel has already, in 3 days, slapped my wife twice and kicked her. Instead of getting support from home they had just enough education to send in a AI generated behavior plan they insist be implemented to help the child “transition” to the classroom. This was the last straw. She meets with the retirement office Monday and plans to be gone by Labor Day. I flaired this as humor, but it actually happened during my second period this morning. MS Chemistry / Physical Science teacher, for what it's worth. Today is our 8th day of class for our students. My second period is Physical Science and is comprised primarily of Sophomores, but I have a couple of Juniors and Seniors. After a week of mostly basic intro/review work I sprung a pop quiz on all of my classes. Short and sweet. 10 questions. The first 7 questions were multiple choice, followed by 2 short answer questions, 1 discussion question (basically asking their opinion on something - guaranteed correct as long as it was answered). At the end of the quiz I gave them some room for questions, comments or suggestions. Nobody offered any. I expect to have some of each Monday at inopportune times. This year I’m moving into a new classroom teaching first grade. There is a restroom attached to the classroom that connects to another classroom on the other side. Last year, the classrooms were kindergarten in my room and behavioral special needs jn the other room. Anyway, children haven’t even been in the building all summer. The restroom REEKS of urine. The custodian says he tried everything to get the smell out but he thinks urine has seeped into the grout of the tile. Any advice on what to do about the smell? Hey folks, I know the question gets asked on here from time to time, but it is one of my interests in any career field. My first career was as an Army mechanic, and I spent most of the first half of my adult life in oily ACU’s. One of the reasons I am glad to be a teacher now is that I get to dress up a little bit for work. Something like this or this is how I’m typically dressed in the classroom. Coworkers have occasionally told me I’m overdoing it a little, but I’ve found high schoolers respond pretty well to it, and I spend all day trying to convince teenagers that school is important, so I think there is something to be said for dressing like I’m doing something important. That said, most people are pretty surprised when I tell them I am ideologically opposed to most dress codes. Obviously there is a lot of variance for what is practical for teachers of different grade levels or content area. It was the 3rd day of school. I physically could not make it in this morning due to a severe panic attack. This position was nothing like I expected it to be. I sent in my resignation before students arrived. I feel horrible, but I could not do it. I have lost weight, sleep and my anxiety medication is not helping. Feeling like a failure. It seems painfully obvious to me that education has been shifted toward maintaining false and graduation rates and giving parents what they want. There a few ways how administration and state governments have done this. The first are credit recovery courses. These 'classes' are literally scams. They are online modules created to shove student through high school who clearly can't make it. I've seen how they work and done one myself. The entire premise is to pass the student. Some are just clicking buttons as fast as you can and really nothing else. The second are pressuring teachers to change grades. While this one is technically against the rules, my suspicion is that it is rampant, at least in some schools. It's hard to prove and difficult to stamp out. The third is related to the second. My director is mad because I wrote a Nurse's Note. I work in a nursing home. During my overnight shift one resident assaulted another resident resulting in the victim having a (minor) injury. Both parties have dementia. I went through all the proper procedures. Alerted the PD and EMS and ended up getting the aggressive resident sectioned and taken to the hospital. I alerted residents' families, called the DON and the NP on call for orders, filled out the paperwork and got everything squared away. The DON told me not to write a Nurse's Note for either resident on the incident which seemed odd. If there is any incident at our facility involving resident injury or change in condition we have to write a Nurse's Note. I was scared about not writing a Nurse's Note and documenting the assault. I thought it might reflect badly on my license. So I wrote the Nurses' Notes anyway. Last night around 22:30, I was starting an IV. I work medsurg and this was a good shift for me. I had passed all of my evening meds. I had then requested all of the additional medications that my various patients had insisted they needed, obtained orders from our very patient night hospitalist, and circled back to pass this bonus round of meds. All of this by 22:30. So many little side quests I won't bore you with, completed at this very reasonable hour. And then I got the IV on my first try. A really promising start to my third night of three. I look up and see on the wall a suction canister with about 400 mls of brown liquid. This patient came to the hospital with a SBO. They do not have an NGT currently, but I know from report that they did have one recently. So, not entirely bizarre to see a container partly full of stomach acid on the wall. Our unit director came during morning huddle the other day, and told us that our unit diff is being cut completely starting in 2027, hospital wide. For us in ICU, that’s going to result in a 22k annual decrease. Been a nurse for two years but recently transferred to a PCU and I’m just shocked at how little it seems the providers on this unit care about people who are withdrawing Had a patient last week on second day of withdrawal. CIWA was 24 and 2mg of Ativan IV every hour (max in our CIWA protocol) was not touching them. Paged provider to state my concerns and recommend moving to higher level of care and they said as long as the Ativan lowers her CIWA score when reassessing half an hour later the ICU won’t take them?? Then recommended I hold Ativan all together until patient was agitated enough/high enough BP for the icu to take them?? Meanwhile they are in locked restraints after ripping through their vest and getting aggressive toward staff, hallucinating and disoriented, etc. Are we just waiting for patients to have a seizure at this point before transferring to icu? I was finally able to land a full time middle school ELA position at a great school, with dream-level supportive admin/coworkers. We are a couple days into the new school year and I am coming into a lot of friction with student behavior. Nothing as bad previous sites and districts that I’ve worked at thankfully…but I’ve noticed that students just straight up don‘t take me seriously. As if I was wall decoration. I was a School Resource Officer (SRO) at a large high school for about 2 years starting in 2000. During my time there, I saw firsthand how forcing older teenagers to be in school when they absolutely did not want to be was incredibly disruptive. It felt like a lot of time and energy was spent forcing kids into a building who then spent the whole day disrupting teachers, ruining the environment for other students who wanted to learn, and even committing crimes. From my law enforcement perspective, it often felt counterproductive. But I want to hear from teachers. My time in the school system gave me a unique perspective of what goes on in a big high school with about 2300 students, what teachers deal with regarding disruptive students and needless to say it was a very eye opening experience. I'm in my 8th year of teaching, 10th year in education, and today is the first time I got the news that a student I actually knew well has died. It was the first day of classes. Everything else went well, but I feel so down. There have been student deaths at our school before, but none that hit close to home for me. I taught him in an English learner support block, three times a week, and got to know him and his friend group well. They ended up eating lunch in my room a lot. So as a Canadian outside looking in I am curious if these days US teachers teach any sort of world religion/comparative religion and if they do , are students more accepting/understanding of different faiths or does it go other their heads? For me when I was taught comparative religion (back when Nintendo Wiis were the hot new trend). We spent about 1/3 of Grade 8 social studies examining 6 major world religions. Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism. Primary nurses are asked to pick up the slack from everyone else in the hospital: -doctors not placing orders -transporters not moving patients -environmental services not cleaning rooms, floors, surfaces -IT not fixing computers and equipment -Unit Assistant not answering phones/call bells, organizing charts, etc -CNAs/Sitters/lift team and PT/OT cleaning and moving around patients When we do these things, it detracts from our ability to focus on our nursing. When we fail in some aspect of our job or even one of the random jobs above, we are written up. It’s too much work for one person to possibly do. Remember that when your boss asks you to leave the unit to transport or receive your patient or any other thing from the laundry list of bullshit. When you start to do someone else’s work, you will be expected to do it and you will have one less helper every time. Count on it. In my journey from working on the floor as a patient care technician to behind a desk as a medical secretary, nothing has surprised me more than how often I hear women calling on behalf of their AOx4, fully capable S/O, father, brother, uncle, adult child, etc. In some cases, the caller isn't even listed as a patient contact, which of course makes things somewhat inconvenient for all involved parties. Maybe it is because I primarily worked nights hospital side, but I've hardly ever run into this outside of the clinic! These days, I have upwards of 4-5 phonecalls a day that begin with something to the effect of, "Hi, I'm calling to set up an appointment... So school has started and I just finished my second day teaching. It was stressful and overwhelming. The students knew I was new and started playing in my face. The Secretary of Education publishes an l agenda of Federal regulatory and deregulatory actions. The agenda is issued under the authority of section 4(b) of Executive Order 12866, Regulatory Planning and Review. The purpose of the agenda is to encourage more effective public participation in the regulatory process by providing the public with early information about the regulatory actions we plan to take.
