New/young teachers: A healthy social life is impenative to maintain sanity

I learned this the hard way many years ago and it nearly drove me out of the profession. I once had a real bad year and I doubled and tripled down on trying to fix it by spending countless hours after school trying to make engaging lessons and get all my classes to be perfect with no issue. The result was I was so tense and on edge during the school day because my whole life had revolved around the way the kids acted. I was neglecting my friends and my hobbies and put all my eggs in the teaching basket. I was miserable because the thing I was putting all this energy into wasn't perfect (it never would be). Once I realized that friends were starting to not invite me to things because they assumed the answer was no a switch flipped. Turns out the more you invest in your social life, hobbies and relationships you significantly feel less stress about work as it becomes a smaller part of your overall life. Work became what I did but not who I was. So teachers: go home. go to that yoga class

“We used AI to align the curriculum to the North Star”

It, Groc or Claude or Siri or whatever wiped its a”* all over my district currculum docs. So it’s all multiple choice questions—like all year. I think embrace of AI is the biggest red flag in education right now. Just as we are realizing 1:1 computers made school worse, all the admin are hypnotized by ai nonsense. There is something about dumbness and love of power — ppl with these traits will love ai, and also more likely to go into admin than stay in the classroom. submitted by /u/No-Consideration1067 [link] [comments]

I have severely lucked out on my classes this year… DFW, high school

None of my class periods are hectic or bad or disrespectful or crazy. They all listen, they participate, we’re 4 days in and they’re engaging in classroom conversation. Nobody is leaving their trash on the floor, or behind, or fighting me. Yes there are some individuals who are attention seeking and acting out, but as a whole, my students are killing it! I am so thrilled for the rest of this school year because I feel like we got off on the right foot and are actually going to be able to get stuff done. Context: I work at a T1 school that has some bad discipline issues (principal is on year 5 and has made massive improvements and we are getting better every day) First year teacher, second year at this school. submitted by /u/Specific_Tonight_877 [link] [comments]

How do you know it's time to quit?

I have been working as an inpatient psych nurse for a little over a year. I think it is fascinating and I really enjoy doing admission assessments and getting to know patients. However, I'm starting to get burnt out by the increasing medical acuity, inappropriate admissions (ie old ladies with dementia) and shitty management. I have an opportunity to switch to a cushy outpatient job with the same pay at the same company. I'm worried I'll be bored. How do I know it's time to jump ship? Weird situation

I am a high school teacher at the same district where my daughter is an elementary student. There was a decision made to cut a teacher to help the budget which put my third grade daughter’s class at 33 children. My wife had a meeting with central office to discuss concerns about this change over the summer and then sent a follow up email following the first week of school with her concerns. I was not included in this email and it came from my wife’s personal email and was addressed to the superintendent and building principal. However, when they replied, they did not reply to her email at all, but replied to me, addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Strange because I wasn’t involved in the initial thread. My wife was intentionally taken off the thread and me added. Is this standard? We are trying to separate me being an employee from parents of a student in the district and find them replying to me and not my wife, very weird. Is this just strange or is this standard since I’m an employee? submitt

Are walkthroughs common in your district?

Hi! I just wanted to see how often or common it is for your principal/asst principal to come in and watch you teach. I notice they come a lot in the district i am in (and co-workers have quit due to the amount of times they have come in) but I have teacher friends from other counties that say they shouldn’t be coming in at all unless it’s a formal/informal observation and I wanted to know. Edit: thank you guys for letting me know walkthroughs are common! That eases my mind a little bit knowing it’s not just our district and everyone has them. I know if I want to stay in this profession, I have be comfortable with anyone watching me teach. However, if I am not comfortable, I am not afraid to pick my mental health in the end. I love teaching and it’s so fun so I hope I get better but if not, thats ok too! Anyway, love and appreciation to you guys 😚 submitted by /u/Logical_Particular47 [link] [comments]

What should stay shared when learning becomes more personalized?

I have been thinking about education as a one-to-many system. A teacher has to work with many students at once, even though each person arrives with different prior knowledge and gets stuck at different points. But I do not think the answer is to turn education into one student alone with an AI. Learning is also social: discussing, collaborating, seeing how other people think and having a teacher who gives direction. What interests me is whether the individual experience around the same knowledge could become more personal. The source and objective could stay shared, while the explanation, interface, practice and feedback adapt as the person learns. I am building an open-source project around this idea, but I am still trying to understand the boundary. What should become personal, and what would education lose if it stopped being shared? submitted by /u/JoseEstevez22 [link] [comments]

AI in PD

It was my school’s first day of PD today. I’m at a K-8 title I near a major city. The amount of generative AI used today alone made me feel so uncomfortable. The signage around the school, the posters and tapestries hanging around the gym, our shirts we’re required to wear for events for the year, and the graphics on all the slides. It’s all slop. The amount of people not only okay with it but PRAISING it was even worse. Someone complimented the shirt design and the principal proudly confirmed that we had ChatGPT to thank for that. This hits different for me because multiple people on my team were literally reprimanded for using AI in their lesson plans last school year. Not sure how I’m going to navigate this year without hurting some feelings or ruffling some feathers. Is anyone else seeing this? What’s going on??? submitted by /u/1159seconds [link] [comments]

Hate having a support facilitator in class

VENT - TLDR - I hate having a support facilitator. I have a very low level middle grades class. I’m pushing them. First week of school they were doing the work a little bit of whining, but when they saw I meant business they got on it and were producing. Today the support facilitator showed up for the first time and it was chaos. They all turned in to whining, crying babies and learned helplessness tactics. It took an entire hour to write three sentences and only after she started handing out candy. WTF. I just can’t deal. I’d rather have them by myself. I could feel myself becoming elevated and anxious and every ounce of energy being drained out of me from what was happening. It was like a bunch of jackrabbits bouncing around. Yelling out, jumping out of seats to try to earn candy, one kid banging head on desk, cause he didn’t get chosen. My energy was just running too high, and I had an honors class to follow. It was not like that at all the first week of school. So basically any dis

Is it normal to feel terrible at my job as a first year teacher

Terrible is probably a bit hyperbolic, but I’m in k-5 self contained and I just constantly feel like I don’t know what I’m doing. Like, I have an idea, but I feel like I have 500+ things to do hanging over my head, and I don’t even know what the 500+ things are and can’t know until they absolutely need to be done. 😭 Is this just anxiety? Or is being somewhat clueless normal in the beginning? I feel like the fact I’m in self contained deserves a lot of emphasis because we have a LOT of downtime…. Which is to be expected of course (I did also major in special education) especially in the first two weeks of school (which we are still in) but I’m still kind of lost on where to start with curriculum when I’m just now implementing visual schedules and teaching kids how to use them. No one at my school is even putting any pressure on me to do things at a certain rate, but I just wanna feel like I’m doing the most I can for the kids and right now I feel like the most bare minimum employee subm

Critically hypoxic but totally calm. How long till irreversible damage?

So I was in a discussion at work over the phenomenon of the “[happy hypoxic]( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent\_hypoxia)” patients that we experienced during COVID-19 and that occurrs in [certain conditions such as HAPE]( https://youtu.be/AdG5KyeIGaQ?is=ZnCo3jjHxiHq1KUU ), and it occurred to me that I have no idea how long someone has when they reach a critically hypoxic SAO2 or measured SPO2 in the field before they start seeing true end organ damage that is irreversible, or start seeing hypoxic insult to their brain. AC Unit Given to me as a gift for my extremely hot classroom.

So my school was built in the 1920s and it’s very old. My classroom is directly facing the sun and I have several windows directly facing the sun. The AC barely works in the school. Needless to say it gets extremely hot in my room. There were times in May and June it reached almost 90 degrees because our air was so bad. I have three fans going at all times and it barely does anything. So as a complete and total pipe dream I put on my AWList this year a portable AC unit. My thought was that people would give Amazon gift cards to contribute to it. It was $300. Well…I had a friend today buy the entire thing. I couldn’t believe it. My question is, do y’all think I will get in trouble for using it in my room? My room gets unbearably hot. Admin accuses me and other teacher of special treatment

Okay so basically I had this student last year who I also have this year who came to class on time everyday and she seemed to be very eager to learn. She was a very hard worker and did very well on all of tests, quizzes and mastery assignments. late last year my AP pulled me aside an basically indirectly accused me of giving her special treatment in my class because she was failing everything but my class and her African American History class, (I taught her Civics last year). It really had me reevaluating myself thinking maybe I was unconsciously giving her special treatment but I know that I treated her the same as other students. She was doing well all on her own. That African American History teacher and I are now in a PLC together and I found out this morning that AA History teacher also had a similar talk with admin last year where our AP accused him of special treatment because she had an A in his class. What are your pet peeves working with coworkers? (Even the ones you love).

I work in long term care. Each unit usually has 30 to 45 residents. We have 8 units. Its always just one nurse and 3 CNAs to a floor. My nerves are usually shot especially when floating to the heaviest units. My biggest pet peeve lately is hearing my name screamed out loud from across a hallway by the assigned CNAs when I'm busy at my cart, or administering meds or treatments in a residents room. They scream my name like its an emergency, as if it's a fire, a resident on the floor bleeding out, an active shooter, only for me to come out or look up in a panic and hear them then say something benign like, " so and so wants a Tylenol. 😵‍💫 it happens on the regular and it makes me react in a grouchy way snapping back "WHAAAT?", when i hear my name screamed. Then they have the nerve to act like i just dont want to do my job. I feel like a mother whose kids call them from across the house repeatedly because theyre too busy to come find me and talk to me in person. I love a lot of my coworker

Anyone else hate the instructional coach at their school?

My instructional coach (let's call her M) is a pain in my ass for no good reason. I am on my 3rd year teaching, and she consistently bothers me about mundane shit. I understood my first year that she would be more present and should dwindle off, however she keeps bothering me about things like minor rules (minor as in most teachers break them) and guidelines regarding our books. What i mean about the books is that we DONT HAVE THEM, and yet she got upset that im using old books from last year. The fuck am I supposed to use then? We are 3 weeks into school with no books! Ive asked my colleges if they also get walk-ins every week at a minimum and they say "no wtf" and " i haven't seen her this year outside 1 meeting". Where do some providers find the audacity to tell experienced nurses how to do their jobs?

A consulting MICU fellow walks into a dumpster fire of a room to find a liver failure patient in DIC who was quickly bleeding out after an emergent vascular surgery. With the patient there were two experienced nurses along with myself. We were doing our absolute worst to keep the patient alive. Upon seeing the chaos and without gaining any context the fellow uttered the first wise words to enter her mind… “What is going on? Don’t you people know how to titrate drips?” Those magic words brought instant silence to the room. The phrase caused us to stop dead in our tracks to ponder such a profound statement. “Do I know how to titrate drips?” I asked myself. Surely this PGY-4 MICU fellow must have vast experience titrating vasoactive medications. Their years of internal medicine training has prepared them to manage an exsanguinating surgical patient with ease. Somehow this fellow has managed to surpass the combined 20 years of accumulated drip titration knowledge and experience of three CV

Didn't even get to interview

I did my student teaching and was a long term sub for two different teachers all at the same school. The one I finished last year the teacher I took over for had left me ZERO curriculum and then resigned two weeks after leaving. So I gave those students a whole year worth of what they needed to know in one semester. I went to every IEP meeting, I was a scorekeeper for sporting events, I got rave reviews from parents. I sent out positive messages when kids did well, my classes improved in reading comprehension across the board. And they knew I really cared too, a lot of them remembered my from student teaching. These kids wrote a freaking PETITION to the principal to hire me and all signed it. (Without my knowledge!) So when not one, but two jobs opened up I thought I at least had a solid shot. I reached out in July, told them I was interested, they told me they would let me know because it had to go to the pool hiring first (since I was a sub and non-continuing) Just found out today th

Hey guys so we recently had a new nurse join our ER and when we did change of shift the narc book didn’t match the medications that were ordered they were charted under the wrong patient and one dose of a narcotic was missing. Apart from this half the charts were not completed and then this nurse texted me asking if I could meet with him to give her gabapentin and Xanax, I was so confused he then realized that he got the wrong number and he claimed that he was texting her brother who picked up his prescription to add to this one of the ER techs that works with us told me that he asked her if she sells street drugs? I ended up reporting this to the director of nursing and the medical director. Severe burnout from home health

I am literally rotting away at my home health job and I am utterly miserable. I took a sign-on bonus and can’t quit til January 2027. I’ve been with this company (UPMC in PA) since Jan of 2025 (was graduating class of Dec 2024). I worked at the hospital on a Cardiac med-surg floor with unsafe ratios and had to check myself into an outpatient psychiatric clinic one day because I was about to lose my mind. I did an internal transfer and ended up in home health. We are expected to see 6 units a day. It can be 6 routine visits, one start of care and 4 routines, and so on. I also case manage nearly every patient I see. I have to call doctors, work on OASIS corrections constantly, order supplies for patients that get rejected due to insurance, and I find myself often charting way past our supposed end time of 4:30 PM. I usually come home, sleep for a few hours, and chart. I’ll be up until about 1 AM. This job has me thinking that nursing is just not for me. I started smoking/vaping again aft

Nurses am I overthinking this after an IV magnesium infusion? I’m an RPN on a med surge floor and I’m spiralling a little about something from my shift and would really appreciate some perspective. My patient needed IV magnesium and had poor access. Her existing LEFT forearm IV had infiltrated, so I removed it. I then attempted a new IV in her RIGHT forearm (her veins were tiny elsewhere and the hand veins were very squiggly/not straight) I got into the vein but it blew, so I abandoned that attempt. I eventually got a patent IV in her RIGHT hand below where I had attempted the forearm. I didn’t really have any another option (87 year olds do not have great veins) In hindsight I wish I had first attempted more proximal in the hand because now I’m worried about complications that could arise from this. The patient was only getting a one time dose of IV mag nothing else no continuous infusions. The hand IV flushed well and the patient had no pain or complaints. I ran the magnesium through

Does anyone else not have a “why?”

May seem like a silly concept, but I sat in a meeting on Friday, and once again they brought up “What’s your why?” Personally, I’ve really struggled with this. I like kids, I enjoy teaching, but I don’t have a real “why.” I had some good teacher growing up that may have inspired my career choice, but honestly there’s really no reason for my career choice, no “why.” I just am. Maybe my “why” is the flexible schedule! But I know no one would like that answer lol. Anyone else feel like this? submitted by /u/Trick_Story_2548 [link] [comments]

HOSPICE UPDATE

PREVIOUS RANT LINKED BELOW https://www.reddit.com/r/nursing/s/l3nZhkF9Kq So Friday was my last straw. I have my schedule set to have light Friday’s because we have mandatory meetings every morning at 8am-8:15, 8:30 IDG that lasts 2 hrs, and another mandatory meeting at 4:30pm. Every single Friday. I had 3 patients to see already and those visits lasted some time. I got to my last patient and OF COURSE my coworker said she has a migraine and apparently her vision is blurred. She said she’s making phone visits to her other 2 patients but she has one patient who HAS to have a home visit. The part time nurse only works M-W so guess who has to see them? Me. I got to the home at 3:30. As previously stated I was thrown out so I haven’t seen MUCH AT ALL. This patient is declining and had a drain and the family wanted me to drain it. They were already frustrated because I felt it was best the patient stay in bed because they were exhausted but they INSISTED on her on getting up to pee. I was fr

I feel like I’m not making enough money.

I’ve been working as an out-patient dialysis RN with a BSN for about 15 years in the Greater Los Angeles area. That’s all I’ve ever done, just out-patient dialysis with no hospital experience. I get paid about $52/hr and have been told I’m already close to hitting the ceiling while nurses in other specialties are getting paid $65+/hr with 15 years of experience. I feel stuck. All the hospitals are looking for nurses with at least 1 year of acute experience. Recently, I’ve been job hunting for acute dialysis RN positions in my area. submitted by /u/elmerweird [link] [comments]

Already dreading the battle with one student

My state passe a phone ban. My school is enforcing it. Phones go into a pouch as they walk in the door. Most students put their phone in the pouches. Others keep it away. If I see it, it goes in the pouch. Except for 1 student. He flat out says no. I had already written him up this first week. Friday he told me, "You already written me earlier in the week, just do that again." I had him escorted out of my classroom by campus police to the admin office. I fear this will be happening a lot. I have reached out to home and no response. I didnt hear anything from the office. But I did email his counselor. I will see what she says. I will probably email the rest of his teachers and see if they have same experiences. Its gonna be a long year. submitted by /u/jesslynne94 [link] [comments]

Teachers can either adjust instruction for learners OR have lessons planned out for days, weeks and months to come. Not both.

I’ll die on this hill. If a teacher can tell you exactly what they’re going to be teaching next Thursday at 10am, during math they are either lying, not adjusting instruction to meet learner’ needs, or a Grand Chess-master capable of seeing things 75 moves before they happen. Don’t expect teachers to differentiate and make adjustments for their students _AND_ turn in scope and sequence for their year and lesson plans for the week. submitted by /u/OtherSideOfKnowhere [link] [comments]

Is a grievance worth it if I’m staying at the school?

Confidentiality was broken by the superintendent in front of 3 others. I have a union and they say it’s a good case for grievance and they will move forward if I choose. I don’t want drama but I also feel they need to be held accountable. Ugh 😑 not a great day 1 submitted by /u/OkRegister6674 [link] [comments]

Refusing report advice

TLDR: I was told to get report on 2 brand new patients to me at 1805 pm, was approached to be given report at 1830, and I refused (shift change is at 1900). Im a PCU RN and I work 7a to 7p. Today, at around 605 pm I noticed on the assignment board two patients added to my assignment. I asked the charge about this and she said 2 nurses were being sent home. I was never told about these new patients and I was concerned about the timing and lack of appropriate handoff/assessment time. I told the charge who said to call the assistant manager. Long story short we talked for like 15 minutes and she explained budget concerns, that she told the charge much earlier to send people home, etc. At 630 pm I was approached by one of the nurses being sent home who asked if I was ready for report and I said im absolutely not getting report at 630 pm. The ANM then called to confirm that I was declining report, and I said, yes right now im not taking report, I am working on my own patients. At 6:42pm, a
