Teachers don't call home regarding behavior in order to pick on or target your child.

Pretty much the title, but I don't know why (and I'm not being a smartass) parents believe teachers call home regarding classroom issues 'just because' or because they are 'targeting' their student. Ask pretty much any teacher and I guarantee you that calling home is their least favorite thing in the entire world because they have 1. Probably approached admin and/or the school counselor already 2. Are using valuable planning time or staying after school to make the call and 3. Know that the parent will defend their child or say their child would 'never'. It's an exhausting merry-go-round. Trust me, no one wants to call home. submitted by /u/No-Basket-1052 [link] [comments]

Bedside to Management

I’m considering a management position thats opening on my unit as its always been something I could see myself doing. I am absolutely burning out on bedside. I primarily do charge and if I could just do charge I would, but I have to do a mix. When I’m bedside I literally dread those shifts. I’m just returning from maternity leave, I have a 6 month old & 4 year old. I was talking to some coworkers and a few of them essentially said I’m nuts. They said I would have to take a lot of work home with me. Im currently a noc nurse, and love noc shift. My unit wants a noc supervisor but has never had one, literally ever, we just expanded our unit last year to be big enough to need one. They want someone to do 4 10’s. I’m planning on proposing a swing shift of 4pm-2 am Sun-Wed. The coworkers also said this sounded crazy, here I was thinking it sounded pretty good? LOL. I could come home nap, help my husband with morning routine (or just sleep) and then nap again. Get baby at noon from the sitter

Moving classrooms drama

When I returned to my classroom last September I found that a bookcase I had purchased years earlier was broken when the maintenance crew was waxing the floors. I informed admin and they told me to send a link of furniture of similar value and they would buy it to replace the furniture that was broken. I decided I wanted a desk instead of a bookcase and they bought it for me. I use a standing desk but I thought it could be a desk for my teaching assistant to use. The school issues all the classrooms metal desks but I never liked them and this one is much nicer. At the end of last school year Admin asked if I would switch grades and I agreed. I went to school last week to set up and saw all my furniture had been moved to the new classroom except that desk so I moved it. Turns out my old teaching assistant told them not to move it because she says it is her desk. I guess bc she sat at it and had her stuff inside. I knew she was mad at me for changing grades so when I text her earlier in

Ma'am, I did not need to know that...

I picked up an ER shift last night. I've got an 86M with new AMS. Virtually no medical history and vitals are solid except for a mild fever and slightly elevated HR. I suspect a UTI, so I'm asking questions in this direction. The spouse is present, doing most of the talking. At one point she points casually to his groin, leans in toward me, and half whispers, "I knew something was off down there, his semen started tasting funny today." Her face is dead serious. I nod, then say, "I'll make a note of that. Can you excuse me for one minute?" I pull the curtain and step out and slide the door closed. We have a soundproof family/consult room at one end of the unit and I head toward it, loudly stating, "Anyone that can leave what you're doing for a few minutes, follow me now!" One doctor, three RNs, and two techs follow me into the room. It is several minutes before we are able to pick ourselves up off the floor. And this is why I pick up ER shifts. P.S. Flaired this as "Art" because that fa

What does it mean to be “trauma informed”? Does that have any impact on how a school handles discipline?

I work at a Title 1, and I say that to say we already deal with a rough demographic and we have quite a few behavior problems. My school is requiring all teachers be trauma informed by next summer. I’m really curious what this means and how this impacts what (little) we do about discipline. submitted by /u/Emergency-Pepper3537 [link] [comments]

got spit on by a gcs 15 neuro patient

i’m a nurse, i work in the ICU. i was giving meds to this patient, being nice and professional. this patient has history of aggression tendencies so he’s in a 5 point restraint. as i was giving his meds he started to curse at me multiple times, i didn’t pay any attention to him at first as they’re just words so they don’t really bother me, told him not do so as i was helping him. then i went up to his side on head of the bed while fixing his iv lines, he spit on me and it landed on my arm while cursing at me. my brain blacked out in anger and i smothered his spit on my arm to his face. he was on restraints and still got aggressive then continued to ask me to wipe his spit off his face while cursing at me, i crumpled up his blanket and threw it on his face and told him to do it himself then cursed at him back. i sent a referral to the doctor then telling them what happened and asked to sedate him, they did. i know i should’ve maintained a professional demeanor but fuck i can handle all

Don’t know how to handle this one

Been teaching 30+ years at the college and high school levels. Without giving any identifying info, I have a student with a 504 which states that this student is not to be called on in class, does not give presentations in front of the class, and no attention can be drawn to this senior. None. Now I understand anxiety and the issues that go with it but my class is a Dual Enrollment core class and my classroom is set up in table groups and a large part of the class is collaborative. I can’t even call this student’s name when I take attendance and mom threatens to bring in a lawyer if this student’s teachers don’t adhere to the accommodations. How do I make it thru the semester if I cannot talk to the student or interact at all with him/her? Example: I am a master teacher for two student teachers who are doing their student teaching hours in my classes. One ST uses popsicle sticks to call on students. He pulled this student’s stick and called on her (this is before we knew about the 504)

Why do so many people have heat for nurses?

From what I seen, a lot of people still struggle to respect the nursing profession and I'm confused as to why. I even asked in another subreddit and instead of constructive feedback, they just flamed nurses even more. For people who have been nurses for a very long time, does it get better? Or is it just a small portion of society that acts hostile towards nurses. submitted by /u/Legitimate-Rhubarb99 [link] [comments]

Is it hard for a big swearer to become a teacher?

I thought about being one when I pursued a BA which I never finished. My degree if finished would have allowed me mainly to be a teacher and little else, maybe a journalist or something office related maybe. But tbh I’m a big curser. My friend wanted to be an art teacher for example, but said he couldn’t because he’s a big swearer I know some teachers may curse a lot outside, but I doubt those who say f this or that every other sentence would do well as a teacher lol. But I appreciate any input. I feel Hs teachers may get away with it a bit more if it’s like ass or damn. Teachers who "Don't want to teach 9th grade"

I work in a large comprehensive high school, 9th-12th. There is a subset of teachers, with varying levels of experience, who say they don't want to teach 9th grade. Some say it explicitly or just name the courses they prefer to teach and omit the freshman level classes. I think it affects the staff culture. We can't all pick what we want to teach. Other teachers who show the competence and skill set at teaching 9th grade become shoehorned. 9th grade teachers do everything they can to prepare students for the rigor of upper grades and don't always get the acknowledgement. Admin intentionally assign certain teachers all upper level classes because they know that teacher can't manage a 9th grade class and they have no plans to help that teacher improve their classroom management. I wish my admin addressed this a little bit, because we are a public school and we are here to teach every student. submitted by /u/fuzzeslecrdf [link] [comments]

Why Are Many Kids by Default Mean Assholes?

Seriously, my classroom management is fine now at my fourth year teaching, but why is the default of a child usually just straight up being a mean asshole to people in school? For instance, they immediately disrespect any substitute as soon as I'm gone. If a teacher isn't just a firm, uncompromising asshole to begin with, they run all over then. I know they're testing boundaries, but why are they straight up disrespectful and callous towards people? Is this a new thing, or have children always done this dumb shit? When I think about it often, it genuinely makes me feel less hopeful for the future. submitted by /u/horror_cheese [link] [comments]

Applying for job with a misdemeanor

I'm graduating from an ADN program this December and I'm trying to figure out when I should realistically start applying for new grad RN positions given my background. I have one misdemeanor battery conviction from California from when I was 18, 13 years ago. It was an isolated incident with no injuries or jail time between myself and another adult, I completed everything required by the court, and the case was later dismissed/expunged under California law (it shows up on level 2 background checks as dismissed). I disclosed my history to my nursing program and have been able to complete my clinical rotations, including going through the required background screening process. I was turned away from one OB clinical but did sim lab. I contacted the FL BON, but understandably they won't give me a pre-determination about whether my application will be approved or whether it will require additional review. So there's some uncertainty about how long my licensing process could take after gradu

What are Paras supposed to do?

I'm entering my second year teaching High School Math/SPED, and I have a particular para assigned to 3 of my classes. I had him in one class the previous year, but he doesn't do anything. He typically sits behind a desk on his phone the entire time, and sometimes bothers the students (which I've had to talk to him about). In last year's class, my coteacher running the class wasn't not very organized and rarely had a lesson prepared. I've heard great things about what paras can bring to a class, but I've never seen it in action. And now that I have this guy in half of my classes, I don't know how to incorporate him into my lesson planning. What's expected of him, and what can I have him do to support the class instead of sitting on his phone the whole time? submitted by /u/Ms_Riley_Guprz [link] [comments]

Managed 30 residents solo, but somehow it’s MY fault I didn't stop a known abusive resident in real time?

I am so beyond done with nursing. I hate what this job has turned me into. I’m managing 30 residents completely on my own on a floor, drowning in med passes, assessments, and total chaos, while leadership sits in their offices passing every problem onto us. We have a cognitively intact resident with an ongoing pattern of being verbally abusive to staff. It’s a well-known issue. She knows exactly what she’s doing. Different floor staff, myself included, have talked to her directly about her behaviour multiple times, and we’ve reported it to leadership over and over. Still nothing gets done. No behaviour plan, no intervention, nothing. While I’m running around the floor, this resident starts yelling at and berating one of our staff members. I was in the middle of my med pass, trying to keep 30 people alive and safe. So no, I didn't drop everything to run over and referee an argument that management should have dealt with months ago. Later on, my team lead finds out about it, walks up to

School starts on Tuesday and I already have parents complaining about school supplies

I teach second and fourth grade at a private school and I have the same students I had last year. So I know the parents really well. I already have a parent calling me and complaining about the amount of school supplies that I’m asking them to get. The parent says that having them get crayons is too babyish. I asked them for three packages of 24 count crayons. He also thinks that three glue sticks is too excessive. As well as three packages of colored pencils. Is this too excessive for a year? Did I go overboard with my school supply list amounts? Obviously there’s more items that I have on the school supply list such as pencils and erasers and scissors, etc., but these are the three things that he complained about. Is fourth grade too old to use crayons? Edit: somebody posted on here that crayons are $.50 each. So I went to walmart.com and saw that Crayola crayons are $.50 each on the website and colored pencils aren’t much more. So three packages of colored pencils and three boxes of

HS Math teacher, year 29…when I started at my current school (5 years ago), our teacher workroom/lounge upstairs in my building (where my classroom is) had 2 smaller copiers, a Riso (high-speed copier for large amounts of copies), and a networked printer. One of the small copiers died that year. It’s still in the workroom to this day, but doesn’t work. Okay, no problem. Still have the others. Last year, the remaining small copiers got networked, so it can run print/copy jobs straight from our laptops. Cool. Then this year started… Riso’s gone. Networked printer’s gone. So 10 teachers are sharing a copier that also has to act as a printer. AITA - Student complaining about Notebook Requirement

Hello, I am a first year middle school teacher teaching at a private school. Generally the kids are very pleasant, but I have ran into my first conflict of the year regarding my notebook requirement for class with a student and their parent. For my class, I am requiring students to get a composition colored notebook that represents the period they’re in. I am teaching 6 sections of Spanish with 70+ students overall and assigned colors to each class so it’s more of an efficient way to organize them for grading or in case things get misplaced by students. We are also having a notebook system for our class and every student having the same notebook helps move this structure more efficiently. I thought it would be all fine, but then I get an email. It is from both parent and student saying that I am stripping away their autonomy by taking away their aesthetic choices. Which goes against out school’s values. And that it would be a lot less obtrusive if I just made the rules to be that they

How do I set boundaries as a new hospital worker in a foreign country?

I’m currently on my 5th working day in a hospital, and I’m trying to figure out how to set boundaries without creating problems with my coworkers. I finished medical school, but I’m currently working in a lower position while my qualification is being recognized. My language level is around B1, and almost everything here is new to me — the layout, equipment, materials, computer system and procedures. So far, most of what I’m doing is patient care, changing diapers, emptying urine bags, etc. I’m willing to help with these things, but I feel like that has become almost all I’m being asked to do. What really bothers me is how it happens. I go from room to room asking my coworkers: “Do you need help with anything?” And very often the answer is basically yes — and I get sent to change a diaper or take care of an immobile patient in an isolated room. Meanwhile, I’m asking for help constantly because I’m new. I don’t know the layout properly, I don’t know all the equipment, I don’t know the p

Being a male teacher is hard

This might fall of deaf ears and I feel silly complaining about being a male in this Era, but it is so hard sometimes to be a male teacher in an industry that is predominately female. I'm one of 2 men in my department of 10 and all the ladies are best friends, sharing their lives with each other, bonding everyday while I'm left out of the socializing. I'll probably delete this post tomorrow, but just felt compelled to post this tonight. Ladies, if you have male coworkers, maybe try to reach out to them and invite them into your circle. Cause let me tell you, it can be quite lonely for a guy in this profession. It's very lonely being an adult male in general in America, but tonight I just felt it compounded even more so. Showing some kindness and reaching out to a guy can do incredible wonders to his self esteem. Men rarely get compliments and so the few we receive are so impactful. You ladies have a lot of power over us, and sometimes it really hurts to not be invited to lunches, not h

Teaching is the saddest career

Sorry for the odd and sad title but… As someone that’s taught for close to the last decade, and as someone who never thought I’d stay in education past my first year. I never thought I’d be so conflicted by my career choice. I started teaching as a segue to another career, it was only supposed to be a gap year job. But I started to love it. Before I knew it, it’s been 8 going on 9 years next spring and I don’t know when I’m getting out. I teach high schoolers, and the sad part about teaching is that I get to build rapport and positive relations with them. I get to see them learn, grow, and then move on. They were teenagers that couldn’t care less about school but then one day they walk the stage and graduate. If I’m fortunate I’ll be invited to see them live their lives and find out what they want to do. I’ve had several senior classes come and go now, and I miss them all. But I hope they are all enjoying their lives outside of our school. I teach at a small school where I saw them eve

My hospital started mass firing casual/PRN nurses

My hospital wants casual nurses to work 400 hours each year. Thing is, in my unit, we have 5 casual nurses, and all of them are retired so they only work seasonally. These nurses are invaluable because they pick up sick calls and cover vacations. Other units are similar. Another issue is that shifts are awarded based on seniority, so the most senior nurse gets all the shifts she wants while the least senior one only gets the shifts no one else bid on (which is still important). Last week, 3 of the nurses on my unit received an email that said they've been fired for not picking up 400 hours. One of them was 15 hrs short. All their pre-booked shifts have been removed, leaving us short staffed. The remaining 2 nurses are in their late 60s and will stop picking up soon. Same thing is happening on other units. ICU now has no casual nurses. This baffles me. It costs NOTHING for the employer to keep these causal nurses. These nurses don't get benefits and rarely get OT. The only thing this do

Public School is Improving

We hear it all of the time: public school is in decline. I don't see it. As a teach, our pay is in decline. That one I'll give you. The money going into public education is in decline when we look at it and understand the basics of inflation. Certainly that is true. In part it is true because politicians and those controlling the funds keep shouting that the money is not producing the outcomes, that schools are failing. Teachers are failing. Teachers, however, are not failing. The whole of the job has changed, true, but that does not equate to failure. We have students in school today that would have been institutionalized before 1990. We have a far more diverse population. We have a completely different spectrum of socio-economics. We have a vastly larger number of students in two income homes with no one at home when the kids get there or even in the mornings. The language shift nationally is vast. Our clientele is completely different. We are also teaching more and more complex thin

Intraoperability between BD Alaris and Meditech

Our hospital uses Alaris pumps and Meditech Expanse. They went Live with intraop this week… And so far, I HATE it. I feel like most hospitals use it with Epic and have little to no issues, but apparently not very many hospitals use Alaris and Meditech. Any nurses out there at the few hospitals that use these two? What are your experiences with it? submitted by /u/Emotional_Olive8842 [link] [comments]

Communal Supplies

I'm a first year teacher and just finished up with my open house. My school has a very lovely admin team and PTA which supplies us all sorts of free supplies. Despite that, we still have a supply list as we rely on donations and so teachers can have a backlog in case of additional students or damaged supplies. I teach ELA and so many parents came to open house with lovely personalized materials with their students names plastered all over them. With the structure of the class, theres really no way we can logically use them. All students are given identical journals, pencil pouches, and plain folders to lessen the focus on having expensive school supplies and now I'm not sure what to do. Their cubbies are already so small and the supplies they need is the bare necessities as everything else is communally shared. I really don't wanna get yelled at by parent by not letting their kids use their 7 different sparkly folders but it would really make me a lot of extra work having to repack stu

Starting a new school year at Los Angeles and I’m already depressed.

I have been teaching for 6 years (6 grade in a middle school in LA) and I’m 29 now and was diagnosed with depression and anxiety since 18 (had symptoms way before).Every other year I get soooo depressed. Usually it happens after a month of going back into school, I hate change. This year 2 days in and the panic started. I stated to shake and cry before the 3rd day of work. I push through for a week but everyday I feel sadder and get quieter and slower. I didn’t make it to Friday, I had an anxiety attack. I cried hysterically and even wanted to hit myself to make the thoughts of the classroom go away. I scared my mother and she took me to the Doctor Who gave me a week off, but I feel so pathetic because school just started. In the summer, I think of nothing and at work time I can’t stop thinking about everything. I don’t know what to do. I even have my sister go with me one day, but it’s hard to talk, hard to eat, hard to sleep, hard to keep living. I’ve been through the ups and downs,

Was offered a dream job, but already am signed for 26’/27’ school year. Help.

I’ll try to keep this short. Yesterday, I was offered my dream job. A full time private tennis coaching gig that will match my pay and benefits for a 1 year contract. I don’t know what to do. I started teaching 24’/25’ school year as a K-12 PE teacher on a one year contract. Last year, they mid year took away the one year contract and moved me to one through the end of this year. I did not sign a new contract, they simply moved me. I never liked my job, and this was my last year regardless before leaving this specific district and moving states. I don’t know what to do. I obviously want to take the new job, but do not want to screw over my staff or students. I am the sole PE teacher at the K-12. What would you guys do? How would you navigate the decision? Thanks for all input. EDIT: A week of PD starts Monday, so school is not in session yet. submitted by /u/Theguert [link] [comments]

After working management SNF nursing mon-fri….

I am SO glad to be going back to my three 7pm-7am at the hospital!!! God, Monday through Friday 8am-5pm (more like working 24/7) SUCKED!!!!!! Anyone else ever switch back and forth? The normal hour life is so dreadful! I can’t even wake up in the morning, nonetheless be productive at work! So glad to be stepping down from SNF management, even if I’m taking a big paycut. At least I can actually work extra hours and be paid for when I’m actually working though. No more working from home for free or staying late without getting paid!!! submitted by /u/Lynkern [link] [comments]
