Our district just approved a 4 day school week starting next year. It will add about an hour the day Monday-Thursday to make up instruction time. I'm not exactly a huge fan of the idea, TBH. I think that extra hour a day is going to be very hard for the students, and thus also for teachers. Especially in elementary school. What are your thoughts? Let's get it out from the forefront. I'm a new grad RN with one month of experience working in the ICU. Before I was an LPN for almost four years, and enlisted military for six. Base rate I make $39.50 an hour, $2 differential for being critical care, and $4.90 differential when I work the weekends. After orientation, if I wanted to, I can pick up incentive shifts for an extra $13 differential, IF I wanted to.Take note, I only need the bare minimum for benefits because the VA handles my health care and I wanted to the tax benefits from investing in 401k and HSA, but annually I'll be bringing in roughly $77000 before disability, but without it, I get roughly $4500 a month. I take home roughly 73% of my gross monthly paycheck biweekly, off an associate's degree, and I'm single with no kids. My family's mostly lower middle class, low class. I always roll my eyes when I hear that. I’ve been in three different school district and I hear that at least once at a PD. School isn’t Disney World. Also, there’s no lesson engaging enough that can compete with a dopamine inducing iPad. I hate making admin. always out to be the bad guy, but they always come off that way. In case anyone out there is wondering what nurses have to deal with…..I had a patient with all manner of chronic lung issues recently who came to my hospital for shortness of breath. Her lungs sounded like a bowl of rice krispy cereal and she was coughing. Then refused her Covid/flu testing by telling me Covid wasn’t real and it was all because of Joe Biden. She didn’t believe in Covid so she knows she didn’t have it. Regardless of your stance on the pandemic, I think most of us who were nurses during that time can agree that Covid was a real illness and absolutely NOT a fabrication by the far left. Hey all, I am a highschool teacher in California. My school specifically serves a population of students who failed or struggled so much in regular schools that they need to make up credits with us. I am an English teacher in my second year, and each quarter we rotate classes so I have gone through four cycles at this point with 4 class periods per cycle of setting expectations, building rapport, and balancing behavior issues with support and discipline. I’ve learned a LOT but none of my class periods have been as hard to handle as my second period this year in our first quarter. I teach a mix of juniors and seniors, and this class is my largest. Administration grouped all the low level readers into one class period because I was willing to work privately with a few low level readers last year and was really successful with them. As title says, I just need to vent because I was hired into a management position and I was transparent with my experience but they hired me into anyways. They said my attendance was an issue and removed me with no warning. All I got the entire time was praise. Then out of the blue they said my attendance was an issue. No talks, no write ups. No warnings. Nothing. When I made a complaint to corporate. I knew they were just there to protect themselves. But I wanted to try to protect my job because they didn’t want to fire me. Hi, everyone. Just coming here to rant. I’m not looking for tips/tricks. Just some commiseration with other people who may feel the same to make me feel less alone. We are literally only 3 weeks into school, and I’m already overwhelmed by the amount of behaviors, accommodations, paperwork, therapists, training, & parent rapport being dropped onto me. I have been teaching for 7 years, I have taught middle/elementary & pre-k. I currently teach at a private, accredited pre-k. My whole job, is literally to prepare my students to be functional when they go to kindergarten next year. But I honest to goodness have never taught young children so helpless, unimaginative, selfish, reckless, violent, entitled, & off their little rockers in my life. I was an office nurse in pediatrics for a year before going to work at a SNF due to my schedule demands. The facility has 3 units - rehab, transitional care, and LTC. I was originally hired on for rehab, but my training consisted of 5 days of rehab, then 3-4 days of TCU and LTC. They said this would allow me to be more comfortable floating to other units if the need arose Turns out towards the end of my training they don't even have a position available on rehab, and they told me instead I'd be on the LTC hall I hadn't trained on. They asked me if I was ready to be on my own on LTC. I voiced my concerns about me not feeling ready and expressing that I didn't have enough consistency in my training. So I teach at a title I middle school and we host an after school program where us teachers that participate get to pick what kind of extras we teach (cooking, sewing, book club, scrapbooking, leadership, etc.) in 20-30 minute rotating sections for two hours. In the questionnaire the students filled out asking what kind of things interest them, a LOT of students said anime. At 11 o’clock after I had already done her head to toe and her vitals she looks at me and says “My throat hurts and I’ve been telling everybody for the last few days and no one has done anything about it.” Now this is the first time she has said anything about it to me. I asked if she told the doctor when he did morning rounds. Which she did not. (As that would make sense) I explained that the NG tube she had was probably irritating her throat and would message the doctor about it. She received a popsicle for lunch and then proceeded to ask me how she could eat that due to the NG tube that was in front of her mouth. I’m teaching first grade and starting my first year after qualifying, and I need to know whether other teachers relate because I’m already losing my mind. I’ve spent hours this week cleaning mould off walls, removing spider webs from windows, cleaning boards, sorting the carpet, putting up bulletin boards and moving furniture that is so ridiculously heavy I’m surprised my first workplace injury isn’t just being flattened by a bookshelf. I’ve probably spent 250 dollars this week, on at times the most basic supplies like a stationary holder because the school clearly don’t view it as a necessity. I mean - what? last year was my first year teaching. im at a title I k-8 school that offers high school algebra to 8th graders... if they qualify. It's first period. The bell is about to ring. Some girls are talking about shipping in some anime. The conversation evolves into their description of what they would like in a guy. I'm here at my desk ready to tell them that this is the chemistry class with the breakers and pipettes, not the relationships. Before I do that, one girl says that her ideal guy can string a bow and shoot through 12 axes in one shot. There's just visible confusion from the other girls. The boys notice the silence and after a small explanation, one says, "Your ideal guy is Matt Damon?" Another says, "Your ideal guy is Nobody?" Last night was my first day transitioning to the ICU. I was told to basically observe, absorb, and learn as much as I could. I was paired with a very experienced older Filipina nurse who clearly knows her stuff. She was extremely competent but she had ZERO patience for teaching and can be blunt and rude. When she heard she is being paired with me her eyes rolled and left the huddle room. I met her in the floor then she went “Grab your WOW because you will be hands-on and I dont like sharing computers” She would let me chart independently without really explaining what she expected, then call me out when I missed something At one point, she was lecturing me about missing some drain assessment details “Who oriented you before? So i work in a nursing home dementia ward. And today i stood yet again alone. 1/12 instead of 1/6. We also need to cook, make drinks, give meds, comfort residents, clean the dishes, clean the living rooms. Anyway no responsible job for one. So around 4.5 hours into my 8 hour shift i was already burned out. Everyone kept asking for attention, safety or to go to bed. And some of my residents noticed how burned out i slowly became. One tried to to clean the dishes. When getting some residents ready for bed they talked how it wasnt normal that i was alone and they thanked me even more then normal, and when i passed the meds to my last residents because everyone else was in bed she started to scratch my back for 20 minutes straight. And well it felt motherly and good. After the 20 minutes i felt a lot less stressed. Even when management makes you question if you want to stay a nurse the love you get back from youre residents makes it worth everything. And thats why i love being the a nurse.
I want to apply for new jobs but on applications they ask if I’ve ever been fired. My previous employer said they use hire right and phone verification and basically just say dates of employment and whether the employee was full time or part time. I was at the hospital less than 90 days. What do you think? I asked my friend in hr and she said if they use hire right I need to list it. I know that many are stuck in low-paying southern/red states due to family/personal/various reasons. I am a middle school elective teacher that covers grades 6-8. I genuinely don't know where to start with this because I've never seen a situation like this happen in real life - only in cheesy kids movies or cartoons. I have a student, who I will call Sam for simplicity sake, that is in the 6th grade, who is so disliked by his peers that they refuse to even sit next to him most of the time. He unfortunately has two things working against him; he is known for being "gross" and he clearly has some issues understanding/respecting unspoken social rules. From the first day of school, I noticed that any time someone was forced to sit next to Sam, whether it be due to lack of options or being put in a group with him, almost every single student would physically move their chair as far away from him as possible. Teaching in a sped behavior classroom with 4th-5th graders and snack time is killing me. We do it when they return from specials at 8:45am. It’s an awkward time bc they just finished breakfast an hour earlier, but it helps the transition from specials to academic work. I may end up shifting it later tbh but that’s besides the point. The problem is when someone doesn’t have a snack, it’s the end of the world. Screaming/crying/begging to leave the room to go get one. A personal boundary of mine as an educator is buying food for kids. I already give so much to this job, I will not be responsible for feeding students. All of my students receive breakfast and lunch at school everyday so I know they aren’t going hungry. Yes you read that right. Private Schools are a breeding ground for corrupt educational practices. The principal I use to have literally said it was illegal for teachers to give students Ds and Fs… She would bully and scream at teachers as if they’re livestock. Guess who would follow this same behavior? You guessed it, these entitled parents who think they own the teachers. Just because you pay tuition doesn’t make you the 2nd coming of Christ. As a result, teachers aren’t even able to discipline students correctly because the school is too scared of losing their customers. We aren’t able to give students the scores they actually deserve because it’s our responsibility to save them.
