I’m a HS English teacher working in a private school in America. This is my fifth year teaching, and I just moved to a new school. I was told parent night is coming up and it seems too much to me. At my last school, we were allowed to leave before 4 (usually we had to stay until 4 every day) and the event wasn’t until 6-7. Here, we have to stay until 4 like normal, there’s a mandatory staff early supper at 4, and the parent night is from 5-7. Essentially, I’ll be here from 7:30-7:00 and that’s if the parents leave on time. So my contracted hours are 7:30-4:00, but on a random day I’m expected to stay 12 hours?? I’m struggling with the new “safety-oriented” rules that keep being implemented. It makes school more difficult for the students, which leads back to making it more difficult for the teachers. I’m not looking for this to turn into a political debate, I just want to know what the end goal is if no gun regulations are put in place. All the school districts in my state banned backpacks in class two or so years before the pandemic. I almost wish we had those bizarre clear bags, at least the students wouldn’t be breaking their backs carrying everything in their arms. They have basically three options: 1. carry everything they need for the entire school day, all day. 2. split the day into AM and PM and go to their locker before or after lunch. or 3. go to their locker between every class, which is not feasible. I just spent three days in the hospital and something really stood out to me. Every shift, when a new nurse would come in to introduce themselves, it was obvious they were on a sort of autopilot. Kind of a fake friendly demeanor. I would be polite, answer questions, and just be cooperative. After a few check ins, i would notice that every nurse would be more genuine with a much better attitude. The day i got discharged, the head nurse (i'm not sure what the official title would be) thanked me for being nice to everyone. even had a note in the system as "pleasant and polite" My question is, are there really that many bad patients? Just an update: I’ve decided that leaving this case is what’s best for me. I care deeply about my client, but between the severity of her behaviors and constantly feeling like I’m being expected to accommodate Mom’s work and personal schedule rather than the child’s actual schedule and needs, it has become too much. The day after the funeral, I still went to work, and Mom relieved me about 30 minutes late again even though she knew I had to go directly to my second job. Mom was also upset that I did not work on Labor Day, despite the fact that she was off work, home, and fully able to care for her child. She stated that she wanted to sleep in and have a break that day. Then today, Tuesday, I dealt with another significant behavioral episode where I was physically assaulted by my client. There have been so many incidents and boundary issues since I started this case, and at this point I no longer feel that staying is healthy or sustainable for me. Anyone else have this? So we’re about a month into school. A student (I have not seen but three times since the second week) emails me. They say they need a “packet” of work. I work hard to make engaging lessons where students are able to talk through think pair shares and also have bell ringer questions that are graded (usually easy A’s) to assess what they remember from yesterday’s lesson. Most of my activities are done in class with teams in collaborative groups with each member putting in their fair share with group evaluations at the end. Also, my tests and quizzes are monitored to prevent use of AI and they think I can just compile a “packet“ they can just Google everything and turn in even though they’ve missed almost every day so far? Our dis has had a lot of problems with absenteeism. Our school actually had to cut some positions due to lack of funding connected to decreased enrollment and attendance. The audacity some kids have is crazy. I’m fortunate I haven’t actually dealt with that much disrespect as a teacher so far (but this is only year 3 for me lol). I’m a young woman, which already sets me up for more disrespect than older teachers or male teachers, but my actual students in my classroom respect me and listen to me. What up homies! Currently, 3 years of ED experience with an ADN. I have ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and NIH. I am finishing my first travel gig. The endgame goal is to get on at the VA for a long term career path. Goals are to set my family up for success; insurance, pension, and etc. I have looked into the grades and see that to make it to Nurse II I basically need a BSN no matter what. My question is, does it make more sense to continue local travel contracts while working on an online RN-BSN program. Once I get the BSN then start the process with the VA, so that I am at the higher grade? Or, does it make sense to get on as soon as possible so that the amount of time in the VA gets started. I start enjoying the benefits and increasing my steps, while working on the RN-BSN? My main concern is that if I start with the ADN and then get the BSN while working I might screw myself on getting to a higher grade/step. I’ve been full time dayshift for 3 years before that full time nights for 2. I am able to take a part time night position starting in November. I’m so ready to go part time but nervous about going back to nights. I’m just feeling a little burnt out FT. My hospital pays 100% of health insurance for my family for both PT and FT. I am a first year teacher working as the only alternative school teacher for a fairly large public school. My students use Apex, and my admin only wants them completing 3 activities a day, because if they do more than that, they’ll get done with their classes too early and stop showing up to school (not my rules). The past few years, students have just gotten 3 activities done and sat on their phones, but phones are now banned, which actually has helped them get their work done way better than previous years. My issue is, now I’ve got a group of Alternative School students for 3 and a half hours, and they only have work for about 50 mins of that time. I’ve been taking them on walks, doing lifeskills lessons, things like that, but oftentimes I end up with downtime, and the students just want to watch youtube or put their heads down. I think our job has us see very sad and depressing things, but can we talk about the added fact that patients will tell us horrible things that happened to them in their lives also ? Like is it not enough I’m juggling angry patients, poor scheduling set up by my manager, stress from the job itself, seeing misery all around me at work but on top of that having to hear it from the patients every other day/ week ? Looking for some intel on Nashville for a new grad RN. Context is I’m graduating December in Memphis and have had a first round interview with Vanderbilt. No offer/salary discussion just yet. Does anyone feel like teaching is slowly tainting their love of learning and education? I’m in my second year of teaching and I feel like I spend my entire work day trying to convince dozens of apathetic students that this thing I care so deeply about is important just for it to never get through to them. I have students that are actively rude to me, 1/3 of the students in my class won’t even turn in their assignments (but tbf i teach all on-level and no advanced this year), and lots put their head down or immediately tune me out if I speak for longer than a minute. Hey guys! I am a really good lecturer. I feel comfortable standing before a class and talking, giving direct instruction, etc. My methods professor is very familiar with my teaching style, but decided this semester that he wants me to branch out from the lecture and learn to facilitate class rather than have my hand on the wheel the whole time. Last week was my first day teaching, so i started with a lecture + guided notes. My mentor teacher emailed my professor with notes on my twaching and mentioned that I was a really good speaker and that the students enjoyed my storytelling and anecdotes. Tommorow for my lesson on government styles im doing expert groups, so having the students teach themselves for most of the class. I'd like some more ideas of what to do though. Hello! I’m a new grad nurse starting Week 5 of orientation. The most dreadful part of my shift is giving report. It’s so nerve-racking, and I have zero confidence when I’m doing it. English is not my first language, and I’ve been wondering: if I were a native English speaker, would my report actually be better? Honestly, I’m not sure. Because of my English, I also constantly doubt myself and think, “Did I hear that correctly?” when the outgoing nurse gives me report. It’s really getting to me. My weakest point is giving the plan . I don’t always know what the plan is, and no one has really told me what I’m supposed to include. Am I supposed to read the MD/team notes and figure out what they’re planning, then tell the incoming nurse? I get conflicted because that’s not information I personally received in report. Is reviewing the notes and communicating the plan also considered part of nursing report? So far, I haven’t had enough time to read through everything and figure out the plan b
Hi!! I’m a teacher, or a guide as we call it, in a Montessori school. I work primarily with ages 6-9, but also with 4-6. I’m an avid AI hater and refuse to use it. My boss has been increasingly using chat & AI to help her with her huge workload understandably. However this year I’m seeing more materials meant to be posted or used in our classroom made by AI with AI images. I would love to pose a question to my boss to address this. I’m having trouble finding any opinions online about the effects of AI images on young minds. Surely we don’t want them absorbing and believing so much AI to be real? I know how hard CNAs work with not near enough compensation. I think they are overworked and under appreciated, and I work with many great CNAs. I need some advice from NYC nurses about a job offer I received! I received a bedside position at one of the top 3 hospitals (NYU, NYP, Mount Sinai) which I am grateful for, but the only thing that I am hesitant about is that the position will be part time instead of full time. They did tell me that we can consider changing the position to full time later, but I'm not sure if this is guaranteed or not. I’m ok with admin coming in, doing what they need to do, then leave. I do, however, have an issue when someone from district comes in multiple days a week and then decides to insert themselves into my lesson for that day. Cutting me off mid sentence to try and insert their strategy to the class, or ask me questions why I’m doing things this way instead of that way. Uh, have the common decency to not do that, or at least wait until the class is over and the kids are out of the room. I'm a lesbian high school math teacher in conservative and religious Idaho. As such, I have many students who come out as gay to me. My principal said that I should be telling their parents. I'm ready for your comments. Edit: There seems to be some confusion so let me clarify some things. -No I'm not going around and announcing at school that I'm gay. Normally I come here to rant, but I'm shook at how great my shift was last night. This summer never let up for us, busy busy level 1 trauma center in the city. Summer is trauma season plus we get our new EM residents that trickle orders and require a lot of guidance. But several of our new residents have worked as EMT's, CNA's/techs and even a nurse! The difference is stark! I could tell so instantly that I immediately asked them if they had worked in the medical field prior to med school. It's just little things, like placing my or on telemetry leads for me while we're both assessing the and I'm busy doing my septic work up before they even put in orders because we both knew we were going down that route. Or bringing me my fluid bolus to the bedside before they even put in the order while I'm placing an IV. Or bringing my pt food and throwing in a diet order right off the bat with their initial work up when the PT told them they were hungry so I don't have to chase them down to ask if
I recently moved to a new school with more involved, mostly middle-class families. I had a meeting with a family last week, and the parents expressed frustration that my upper elementary classroom doesn't do "Fun Friday" or individual incentives. It's frustrating. First, school JUST started last week. While I have done "fun" maybe 30-minute end-of-the-week play sessions in the past (magnet tiles, Legos, etc), I have curriculum to get through. There are kids with academic needs and our school has two add-on enrichment classes throughout the week in addition to their normal specials classes. I live in PA, not far from Trenton, NJ border. I went from inpatient to outpatient and took a pay cut. Now my fiancé has been laid off from an IT job for over a year, we are going to lose our house if I don't go back to work in a hospital. So I graduated May 2024 and took time to care for my newborn after school. I recently started applying for jobs this summer. All of the hospitals near me require 1 year of experience (the application will instantly deny without it) for regular job listings and anyone with less than 1 year of experience should apply to the new grad residency listing. I spoke with a recruiter and she told me since I graduated over a year ago I do not qualify for a residency (even though their site does not say that) she recommended that I get experience first, gain experience and apply for a regular listing after a year. Hi everyone, i'm a new nurse (about a year into nursing) and i'm on a med-surg floor. I've had a few situations where i've had to transfer a pt to ICU or call rapid response, but each time, I feel so incompetent. I know nurses gain knowledge and skills through experiences, but it's hard to give myself grace sometimes. Sometimes when a patient is starting to decompensate and I have the MD or RRT nearby, I feel stuck or frozen. Like I suddenly don't know what to say or what to do. I know I need to let the experienced individuals take over at times and just support and learn from the side, but I really don't like feeling so useless. Although I may lack the knowledge or skills during a critical situation, how can I expand my knowledge to make myself more useful during these situations? I am a very non confrontational person, and honestly didn’t realize nursing would involve so much fighting with grown adults for their own benefit. I’ve been a tech for over a year, and although I have learned to adapt to some extent, I’m realizing that it is just part of my personality and I don’t think it’s ever gonna get much easier for me. I'm a math teacher and I am almost 100% paper and pencil today. I know math is one of the easier subjects in which to make this shift. I can't imagine having to read and grade 100-150 paper essays for an English class. But how doable would it be for you in your subject and would you want to? I've been taking deli meat/cured salami for lunch for years. I eat it with snack cheese and veggies/fruits of choice (mini peppers, apples, etc). It's fast, easy, and zero-prep. Recently I learned that deli meat is carcinogenic. I always knew that deli meat isn't the healthiest thing in the world but now I've officially checked out on it. That said, I need other zero-prep, healthy ideas. I needed to be out for three days so I left my 6,7, 8 math students a Make Your Own Dream House Floorplan area and perimeter project to work on while I was gone. I generated it all from scratch because I’m old school and persnickety. I never like anyone else’s projects or lesson plans as well as my own. The basic project was that each room had a given area. Day 1 they drew the floor plan on graph paper, Day 2, they got a worksheet where listed their side lengths for each room and proved how their room was the correct area and then calculated the perimeter of each room. Day 3 was making the final draft of their drawing and checking their work. On the worksheet, I wrote the first question for the bathroom and then I cut and paste it for each of the other rooms. On the seventh grade version, I neglected to change the word ‘bathroom’ in the text of some of the other rooms’ questions, changing only the first line for those rooms. Just like the title says: my largest class has 34 kids. I am a first year teacher at a middle school. We are very underfunded and understaffed, so I am also the ONLY teacher teaching 6th grade for my content area. I’m thankful because my students aren’t rude or disrespectful, but they are very loud and chaotic. I’ve tried using call backs and it only works for about 5 seconds. Hi everyone, I've looked through the history and I'm not seeing many answers to this question exactly. By and large, I've found that the majority of people don't like Meta Glasses. Aside from obvious student privacy concerns, teaching with a potential camera on you all the time makes me uneasy. In speaking with a Meta rep last week at a department store they also admitted they make them uncomfortable. I'm very capable of requesting a student to put away their cell phone, but that's because it's clear to see that the cell phone is in use. Is there a reliable way to determine whether or not Meta Glasses are in the vicinity, and then if they're powered on?
