My school is running a professional development series throughout the year that’s focused on restorative justice. I understand the value of restorative justice, but what I don’t agree with is the way the presenters are holding the sessions with us. We are broken up into grade level groups for each professional development session, and the majority of these sessions require us to rehash and/or expose our own traumas. Not only is this uncomfortable for me, but I feel that this could be detrimental to my mental health. I’ve done my own therapy & work outside of my employment, and have found ways to deal with and overcome my trauma that work for me. Spending the first half hour of my day once a week discussing my private trauma with coworkers I barely know does not set a good tone for the rest of my day. Last night I had a patient who was a direct admit for an IVIG infusion. These infusions require close monitoring, timely premedication and timed vitals and titration every 30 minutes. This patient came in at 1715 and the IVIG was not ready until 1830. Shift change starts at 1845. When I explained to the charge nurse and night shift RN that I didnt feel it was safe to start the medication so close to shift change because it is a high risk medication, I received a lot of push back and I noticed they were talking to other nurses behind my back about it. Is this truly something that I did wrong? I feel that I would be liable for poor oversight and shift change is a mess because the doctors are all off the floor doing their own shift change as well. Yesterday I was at work in A&E I’ve worked there for 11 years as a band 5 and it’s a job. Anyway I was in Green Rap where the ambulances off load. I was helping as they were busy. I was told a patient needed IVabxs so I prepared co-amox and a bag of fluid. I put up the fluids. I confirmed her allergy status (she had none) then I started to push 20mls of if co-amox After about 5mls she started puking I removed the syringe and then her skin went red, she appeared to have a seizure. I called the emergency buzzer and the team came straight away we did all we could and got her into resus she had another arrest. I left as I had finished my shift, I documented what happened the NIC reassured me and the matron. Yet I still feel bad Really bad Her daughter left to get a Costa before the IVs went up- she must be so confused!! I’m lesson planning for a remedial 11th grade math class this year. After working with them for about a month, I’ve realized that a lot of my students feel discouraged by math or openly share that they dislike it. I really want to show them how math connects to real-world situations and help them see that it can actually be interesting and useful. I teach in California in an area that rarely gets hot, but several days a year in September/October we can go into the 90s. That wouldn't be a problem if we had air conditioning, but only the portables have it. I don't have a portable. So today, I taught in 93 degree heat with no air conditioning, and in the last hour of school, the air got extremely smokey to the point where my nose was stinging. Our district has reserve smoke days that they can use. It's going to be in the 90s again tomorrow, and it might be smoky again. Are they using one of the smoke days? No, they are not. I had to call in sick, because I'm not feeling well from working in the heat and smoke, and I won't be able to working with smoke coming in through the open windows throughout the day tomorrow (it's not an option to close the windows when it gets that hot). The title. Is it always supposed to be like this? I am so incredibly overwhelmed and exhausted all the time. My curriculum makes no sense, I am constantly being observed, and my instructional coach said that she "knew I'd get crushed" by the students because I mentioned having a passion for writing. Today I got assigned a brand new class with brand new curriculum and brand new students who are 7th and 8th graders. Why? I wish I knew. I don't even have a roster to take attendance; they just showed up at my door saying they had my class. I teach 90-minute blocks of 6th grade, and now a 45-minute class of 7th/8th grade, and I have a single 45-minute planning period to do everything. I work on a PCU unit, and we get insulin drips and CIWAs that require a 3:1 ratio. Lately I’ve been getting assigned BOTH a CIWA and insulin drip that requires the nurse to be 3:1 and I’m just wondering if any other hospitals/floors allow this? I been a CNA for about 2 years now..and honestly I don’t know how I feel about it. Is it just me or does sometimes you feel like someone personal maid? How do you get over that? Because I true do enjoy helping people out, but at the same time I feel like there’s so many CONS about being a CNA the actual PROS. I don’t know if I’m just burnt out of the 12 hrs shifts or if it’s in general my work environment..I go to work feeling anxious and I leaving and end up crashing out in the couch. And management have been micromanaging a lot lately and it kinda makes me feel like crap in a way like almost like they’re saying I don’t know how to do my job but it isn’t just me it’s the whole unit. I am an RN applicant who currently holds an LNA certificate and just passed my NCLEX. I received notice from the State Board of Nursing that an investigation has been opened based on a prior complaint made while I was working as an LNA. The allegation is that I used drugs and was impaired while working as an LNA and during nursing school. I have been given an investigative questionnaire that is due October , and I have been advised that I will be interviewed by the Board investigator. The Board questionnaire also requires disclosure of every arrest, charge, or citation regardless of age or outcome, including matters that were dismissed. I have juvenile records from dating from 2012–2016. All of the matters occurred while I was a minor, and I have no adult criminal charges or convictions. I already have a job offer and a pending start date just waiting on license number which is currently on hold due to this allegation. It was my first day teaching kinder today. It went okay. I have one kid (MLL) who is completely not with the program. On the rug he touches others faces, body turned away, talking and wondering around the room. Mom said he knew English but I am doubting that. In the meantime, how can I get him to not derail the rest of the class and pay attention? Chair on rug instead of sitting on the ground? I tried getting right up and making eye contact and saying stop, I tried positive praise when he was doing the right thing. I teach 6th grade science. My school wants to make things easier on kids, and so the gradebooks are only supposed to have about 10 assignments in the gradebook per quarter. A few more is fine, but not too much (they've even called teachers into meetings to discuss this if they felt they felt gave too much). So this year I started a weekly assignment. Basically, a short task per day to show some level of understanding. It is due no later than Monday but I'll accept it on Friday ifnthey want it graded over the weekend. It's super easy, consistent, and I let the kids have some freedom too! There are dedicated tasks Monday-Thursday, but they can choose their preferred one for Friday. I even showed them how to do each one and provided a handy guide for their binders showing good examples and bad examples. I can't get most of them to turn it in. It's like pulling teeth. Middle school, new to the district, not new to teaching. So, the units for my content were “backwards designed” in that an assessment was made using a test bank, some of those questions were used for quizzes, and the Google Slide presentation, guided notes, warm-ups, and vocabulary pull very heavily from the assessment. . . . I don’t like this. The main reason I’m not a fan is that the kids don’t have to practice many reading skills because it’s bullet points on a Google Slide. There’s no practice with finding the main point, or active reading, or even serious reading stamina. But the point that people keep repeating is “it’s backward designed!” But it’s not, right? For context, I teach 1st grade. I had to go on Bereavement leave for a few days and had a sub. This sub had the nerve to rearrange my whole class room, steal 10 expensive sharpie brand pens, give out all of my hidden snacks in my closet, and tear apart my calming corner. I asked the other teachers who did this and they all said my sub. Not only that, but half my class wasn't in their desk groups, but were on little time out desk islands. My special book I read to the kids was folded up and my place was lost. Other IAs that popped in said my kids were excellent, and that the sub terrorized them. Pretty much as the title says. I work on a general medicine floor and I have had patient that have coded but never on my shifts. I usually heard about it the next time I worked. Now I would never want a patient to code on me but I have been on a nurse for nearly two years and have never been in one. Never in nursing school, never during orientation, and never in the two years I’ve been a nurse. I recently got a position on a new unit that I know will be bound to have codes. I am terrified cause I feel so unprepared. Even though I have nursing experience I feel like I am going to freeze up or panic. I got my first angry parent email of the school year. I was accused of not following a 504. Her argument was “his experience is the same as every student in that class.” I went through his 504 again to make sure I wasn’t missing something. And she’s right. His experience is exactly like everyone else’s in the class. But I’m also following the document to a T. The student has ADHD. I also have ADHD. For that reason, many of the common accommodations are already systems that I use. Whenever I come across a common accommodation in an IEP or a 504 (not every accommodation, but the ones that come up frequently), I just tend to make it universal. For example, I provide headphones that are compliant with state law for all students to use during independent work. I give all students a copy of class notes. I provide organizational support to every student. I provide graphic organizers for almost every writing assignment. Not every student will get one of these, but I have them available to scaf

Says good morning. Like having three students sitting outside your office before the first bell even rings. I had three wonderful gentlemen who decided to pitch water balloons at students driving in to the student parking lot. Security grabbed them and brought them to my office. I decided to go ahead and give them 3 days after school detention where they will be working with the janitors to clean up the campus. They will also spend their first afternoon in detention picking up water balloon fragments from the parking lot. When I taught full time, students used to bring me coffees or energy drinks to start off the morning. Security brings me knuckleheads. For at least the last 4 years, I have at least 1 student who seemingly has never touched a writing utensil in their life. Always students who this is their first ever time away from home(no preschool or daycare). I will ask them if they have coloring books or ever draw at home and they’ll say no. They have to be explicitly taught how to apply pressure to write on a paper, what it means to “color”or how to draw. The kids always pick it up quickly after being in class. But still, it always bothers me… if someone had just taken the time or provided the resources they could have developed these skills much earlier. Particularly Alabama and surrounding states. I’m a new grad NICU RN in Oregon. I feel very lucky because I am paid a great wage and enjoy union protections like mandatory breaks covered by a dedicated meal/break nurse, and strictly regulated patient ratios (no more than 3 patients per nurse). Incidentally, I am at a state in life where my spouse and I are thinking about moving and exploring other parts of the country. Specifically, my parents (who live in Alabama) have been pushing hard for us to move closer to them so that they can play a more active role in our kids’ lives. They think the low COL would make up for the dramatic difference in wages, but the math isn’t working for me. Reading about nursing careers in that state, it seems like I’d be going to one of the worst possible areas for this profession! The pay is barely more than I made as a registration clerk while going through school, and I worry about my ability to handle larger assignments than I’ve been trained to expect.
Semi new teacher (been at the school since February). It's the first day of school, and I had to cover two classes plus my own. One teacher was absent, and the other teacher is on leave until October. Neither class had a substitute, so at first I gathered them in my room until the admins could figure out what was going on. Apparently this meant that EVERY class was coming to my room, including the lunch period. I had no preps, no time to get water, nothing. At the end of the day I was told I "should not have done that" and that there was no reason to have that many students in my room at once. I suppose I could have communicated the situation better, but I definitely don't think it's fair that admins placed signs on the empty classrooms directing them to my room, expect me to manage the situation, and then get mad that I took the initiative to help. Man, what a week this day has been. Hope everyone else had a good day today. Edit: to clarify, I only directed one class to enter my room.

Obviously, we all wish we were still on break. My 1st period was complaining: "Just give us a break." "Lets watch a movie instead of doing work." "Why is our reading homework so easy?" I was going to have them watch an edpuzzle at the beginning of class, but because the video on edpuzzle originated on youtube, it was blocked and I had to shift to another opening activity. Like this was my chill class for the first few weeks of school. They were always so quiet, but now they're complaining so much. Hey y’all. I need a quick sanity check here. Working as an allergy nurse ATM, and sometimes we get patients who come to our clinic for their shots from other allergists. I have heard a few complaints from one specific allergist with the shots their patients received from me and it’s making me question my skills. Mind you, I’ve worked in the hospital giving subq heparin and stuff all the time. Correct me if I’m wrong, you want to pinch the upper arm fat towards the back of the arm and avoid being too close to the elbow, and also avoid being too central as you don’t want to hit the deltoid. Yet, she wants them higher and more central?? No other allergist has ever complained about my shots. I didn't find an actual sub for this but I thought I might ask you guys since i also work at I school and might face some same challenges. I’m 28 and this is my third day working as a receptionist at a school (KG–12, around 800 students). I have no previous receptionist experience, so obviously I’m still learning everything. The first two days were honestly fine. There’s a lot to learn, but I felt like I could handle it. Today my coworker had to leave unexpectedly because her daughter was sick, and unfortunately it happened around dismissal time, which is apparently one of the busiest parts of the day. I suddenly had multiple parents waiting, phones ringing, and I had to contact different sections to bring students out. The problem was that some of the sections weren’t answering my calls or weren’t responding quickly. One parent called asking where her son was because he still hadn’t been brought out. I contacted the section and asked them to bring him, then went back to the reception
High school teacher here absolutely sick of having to enforce cell phones. Our district just started a new complete cell phone ban… but has done nothing to support our teachers with it. We are still in charge of documenting and collecting the phones. Kids still bring them in every day. My solution?…. 17 and under? You get a phone with a very limited screen size. Maybe 2 inches by 2 inches. Makes it very easy to quickly identify a kid/teenager phone. You cannot download any apps that aren’t approved. It can call, it can text. 18 and over? You can now have a smart phone. Studies all over the place are confirming that cell phones are literally addictive. I work on a unit that does rotating weekends. You have to work every 3rd weekend. My current schedule while being oriented didn’t allow me to predict what weekends I’d be working on my own. A few months ago, my wife’s family got us tickets to a NFL game and it happens to be the first Sunday I’m scheduled to work on my own. I asked if I could use PTO (I have like 60 hrs from working there as a tech and never taking it or calling out). I was told for the first time ever that you can’t use PTO on the weekend and have to find someone to switch shifts. I feel like this is a weird policy. I know I could just call out if I can’t find someone to cover, but it seems weird that we’d potentially put the staffing in a weird position that morning of I call out because I can’t find someone to switch. I asked friends on different units and they said this is the norm there, too. I have never heard of this, but used to work part time as a tech and I worked nearly every weekend. I have been a teacher for well over 37 years. Each year we are asked to contribute to the sunshine fund for people‘s weddings, family deaths, etc. etc. The cost is typically about $25 a year for me. It is nothing. However, I have noticed that those who run the fund definitely have their favorites. Someone getting married that they like and they are doing it up someone that they don’t care for not so much. At our school recently, I’d rather quiet teacher lost her mother. She got a card. Just last week or rather popular teacher lost her father. She got a card. There has been emails to cook food to come over. I am almost 30 weeks pregnant and i work as a middle school teacher. I have teaching load of 6 periods per day each 50 mins in two separated parts of the school. Sometimes i need to finish a period in a class that is upstairs on one side of school then go to the next one that down stairs on the other side. Everyday i get home totally exhausted. Im having this high load bc we have shortage and since other teachers will be covering me when im on maternity the VPA thinks its only fair i take the higher load now, but physically this is killing me.
