I am an ESL teacher for adults and teach intermediate level. I have one particular student that gets an attitude with me saying all we do is sentences and that my lessons are boring and that I should do more games or creative lessons, but if I do those then she doesn’t even end up participating. I also separate sentence/grammar activities with games like wordle and contexto and conversation activities, but idk I feel really discouraged today because she caught an attitude with me in front of the class said we do too many sentences and I was just like… this is English class? A little bit of background on me- I have taught HS math and community college math for about 17 years and am at age 42. I like teaching but the standardized test issues are making me think about a change. We have implemented new curriculum, and changed ways to try to improve over the last 3 years but our PSAT scores keep slowly falling. This will be year 3 of our scores not being up to par in the entire math department. There are no incentives period allowed in our state/district for students to do well. We cannot technically even say, "we will give you donuts or have a pizza party if you do well". My principal told me this March that this would be my last year (this coming year) if scores didn't improve. They said the district said they wouldn't be allowed to keep me after this year. I don't dislike my principal as we generally have a good relationship. They tend to forget things a lot so this may have been a scare or motivated tactic maybe... I teach 6th grade and my classroom happens to be the closest one to the upstairs girls bathroom. You have to walk right past my room to the bathroom, which is just around the corner. I always tell my female students that I keep pads in my room should they ever need one. I’ve always just kept them in a drawer inside my desk and the kids would just discreetly tell me if they need one. And since this particular bathroom is the bathroom mainly used by 5th-8th graders, the girls in grades 7/8 know me from prior years and often stop by my room on the way to the bathroom to ask for a pad. Being a female myself and relatively young, they’re pretty comfortable asking me for those, and since my room is literally almost right next to the bathroom this makes sense and is convenient. I have noticed over my five years of teaching that schools can do very little to stop the almost endemic bullying. Teachers do what they can when they see it, but I know there's a lot of bullying going on when I'm not around. Kids aren't stupid, they won't do it when teachers are around. They will do it on the bus, or in the bathroom, or in the hall, or just when they are outside of school. Every year, Kids also don't understand the difference between bullying and conflict. There's a lot of conflict between, and that could just mean they don't really know how to interact with each other. It could also just be a fight between friends. Schools aren't good at differentiating between true bullying and friends not getting along because there's no proof of anything. My parents shouldn’t have been parents. When I was little, they’d get into the worst screaming matches over what I should and shouldn’t be doing. My dad was a push over, so if little me didn’t want to go to school, I didn’t have to, and my mom never cared enough to make me actually go. All she ever did was go in her room and smoke weed. Hi all! So the area I’m looking to teach in is highly competitive (suburban Philly), and even more so for my content area (secondary ELA). I’ve applied to 20+ schools, gotten a few first interviews, and one call back that ended up being filled by a different candidate. For more context, I graduated last December, and was an LTS for the remainder of the school year. So now I’m weighing my options and trying to figure out what would be the smartest move for me career-wise for the next school year. I just got home from a vacation weekend away and made the mistake of reading my principal’s “mid-summer update email” (k-8 district, I’m at the only middle school). I’ve just finished my 15th year teaching, the 8th in this school, and when we met in May, the principal and I were in agreement that it was time for me to step back from some leadership positions and let others have the opportunity to step up. However, this July schedule draft sings a very different tune. Hi all, I graduated college during Covid and have been working in Corporate America every since. I've been through layoffs and unemployed burnout, you name it. I'm currently self employed but am also looking for some sense of stability with flexibility. I am considering teaching. I have my TEFL and have taught adults and substituted for ESL before. I've never formally taught children. I just bought a course required for substitutes in my county and am working on this to get experience substituting. I’m a third year elementary teacher, in a new postion, and high-functioning on the autism spectrum. I am high masking, so people tend to find me “thorough” “detail-oriented” and “quirky” but would never call me autistic. I am generally interested in what students read and will sometimes pick up their book, read the summary on the back, and flip to a random page and read a little. So I watched the World Cup today as someone not too invested in either team. But as I watched, I found myself getting more and more pissed off and I had no idea why. I realized that it was the reactions of the players whenever they thought a foul should/shouldn’t have be given, or when they didn’t like something. The wide mouths and pointing and outstretched arms and incredulous expressions are exactly what my middle school boys do when they get caught. Usually accompanied by the classic “broooo” and complete lack of accountability. Alllll of my education has happened within 100 miles of where I teach now. (Southern California) When I was in middle school, there were student lockers. But we weren’t allowed to use them. Since then I have never been in a school where there were lockers. I have seen lockers in schools in tv shows and movies. I have never (in 30 years of my life teaching and being in schools) been in a school with lockers. Last week my niece and I went to her middle school orientation. Hi, all. Is it ok to accept a teaching position if I know that I’m moving out of state next summer and I am only planning to work at that school for this one year? I have a month calendar white board I bought from Michael’s a couple years ago and I love it. It’s the perfect size and it’s rainbow. But every month, when I have to reset it, erase the old markers off is the biggest pain and becomes such a process. I’ve used normal expo dry erase markers and wet erase chalk style markers. Sometimes they wipe off easily, sometimes I have to pull out all the tricks. Sprays, paper towels, felt erasers, going over it again with marker, etc. and a lot of the time I’m left with smudging and faint color deposits Is there anything any one can recommend to either make it easier or a specific marker brand that will come off better? Hey All! So I mentioned in a previous post I’m in Florida and was a 6th grade math teacher this year. I was dropped due to budget cuts, at least that was the official reason as I had great evaluations. But have applied to other schools in the district, out of the district, charter schools, and jobs outside of education. I have experience teaching 5th grade, 3rd grade, kindergarten, and 6th grade. On Friday I sent in an application with a follow up via email to stand out. The principal called me almost immediately and seemed eager to talk to me. Apparently the opening was unexpected and she wants to fill it. So we had an interview via Microsoft Teams yesterday (Saturday) which I was not expecting. She seemed very interested in what I had to say. She then told me she had two more people to interview on Monday and we will be in touch. I’m trying not to get my hopes up. But many people in my life think I’ll get the job because this principal seemed so eager to talk to me she spoke to me on
"If he does fail, you didn't do your job." Those things were said to me near the end of the 3rd quarter. Jonah and his sister had transferred in a couple of months prior from another school. I found out later the pattern was that Dad would get pissed at a school and then move the kids. Jonah had an IEP. Jonah also missed at least two days a week at school. I told Dad that his attendance and lack of effort in class were why he was failing, and that's when he told me about how it was my fault and he can't fail because of IEP. He also tried to argue about attendance and how it wasn't an issue. I told him IEPs don't work that way and he stopped responding to my messages after that. Jonah finished up with something like a 19% in my class, his sister at least failed with something in the 50% range. I thought Dad might flip out, but he never said anything to anyone. I am currently finishing up my special education certification, it's my second certificate. Before I even started the program I saw horror stories about ABA and how dehumanizing it is. One of my last classes at my college is an entire course of the joys of using ABA to change student behavior. The course started out with the "myths" about it, but then jumped right into what people complain about. Hello Everyone! I’ll be a first year teacher this upcoming fall and looking for some advice. I got into my dream district that I student taught at under their selective student teacher program. I’ll have two AP preps as a first year (my supervisor said typically they only give first years one but they believe I can handle two). I’m super excited to teach the subjects! Here is where the advice comes in. I got a call from the director of sports asking if I’d be interested in a sports position open at the school. I hesitated and said I’d think on it but appreciated him reaching out. Later in the day my supervisor texted me about the position as well. I want to be clear I don’t feel pressured to take the position. However, I wanted to make sure that if I were to take the position would be taking on to much as a first year? I’m genuinely curious. Where I live, a single, childfree 40-year-old man (owns a small business) ran for a seat on the school board. He was raised in the area but had spent the previous 20 years living in another city and had only recently moved back. Many parents felt that it seemed unusual/odd, and many believed that those elected to the school board should have children who currently attend, or previously attended, schools within the district. On one hand, I guess he could offer a unique perspective, and of course everyone in the community is impacted by school board decisions. On the other hand, I can see where the concerned parents are coming from; he has less personal stake and less connection to the system. Had a fairly horrific family this year - highly privileged ,always making outrageous demands, in complete denial about their child and now having un-enrolled said pupil long before the end of term. I shan't be weeping. Received a curt mail on Saturday evening (stupid me for even looking in my inbox), requesting that I leave the child's belongings at the entrance office. No please or thank you. Even the ask beggars belief - we are talking about two years worth of worksheets, exercise books, sports gear etc. All stuffed into drawers, sandwiched between school books , nothing sorted , let alone a bag to transport anything . The classroom is situated on the top floor , so this would take at least 45 mins my end and involve several trips up and down. Should I ignore ? Charge a cleaning fee?! Hi! I’m a first year teacher and have been given a very, very small, oddly shaped room. I am teaching a combined class of 3/4th graders and believe I have 21 students (don’t have the full roster yet). Ideally, I wanted to start the school year off in stand alone rows, to help with classroom management, however there is simply no room. Even pushing desks together leaves very little walking space. I really don’t want to put desks sideways to where they will have to turn their necks just to see the whiteboard but I’m not sure if there’s any other way. I am also feeling incredibly guilty because I don’t think there will be any room to have a carpet space for them to sit on. I wanted to have morning meetings on my smart board where children meet on the rug, and wanted to close our evenings off on a rug and use the smart board. However my smart board is shoved in a corner and Is taken up by the desks. I don’t even think I’ll be able to use my smart board unless it is strictly for one off vid
This is my third year teaching, and each year I’ve taught summer so there’s not been much of a break. This year feels different, I just don’t feel nearly as creative anymore. I’m closing out a unit this week and I have no idea how to kill time. Part of me wants to reuse all the stuff from last year, but I know that it’s not nearly as effective. Just looking for input from other educators! I have a 4 month old who will be starting daycare in 2 weeks. He’ll be almost 5 months when he starts. He’s absolutely refusing bottles - we’ve been working with a feeding therapist for over a month now and have seen very little improvement. Our feeding therapist thinks that at this point, he likely won’t take bottles. We’re introducing straw cups now and hoping that works out in our favor but either way, it’s very unlikely he will be eating much (if at all) at daycare in the beginning. Do you think I’d be asking too much if I asked if it’d be possible for someone to cover my room 15 minutes before lunch and 15 minutes after lunch so I can nurse him during my lunch? 10 of those minutes would be passing period, so only 20 minutes of supervision. Daycare is 15 minutes away, so I need pretty much an hour to make sure I have enough time. This wouldn’t be long term - I’m hoping just the first couple of weeks during the initial transition. I know

I’m applying for jobs and would love to apply for a family and consumer science (FACS) position at a high school. However, I have celiac disease. I know FACS includes cooking, but does it include eating the prepared food? I don’t want to apply and have it be a waste of my or the school’s time. Hello Everyone, I am a brand new sped teacher tasked with decorating, and supplying her classroom. I knew that Oklahoma schools were underfunded and that teachers typically supply their own classrooms, but I did not realize it was to this extent. I at least expected to be given scissors and a stapler, but no such luck. I am on a practically a zero dollar budget. I realize I will likely not be paid until the end of September, and I have my own child to support. Everywhere I look, I see perfectly decorated classroom with everything students could possibly need. I am feeling so inadequate. I feel bad that I cannot give my students the classroom and resources they deserve. With that being said, does anyone have any advice on decorating/ supplying a classroom on a next to nothing budget?? Warning: Rant ahead I spent a lot of the last few years at my new school trying a bit too hard to connect with my coworkers. I can be a bit of a socially awkward person at times, but that is neither here nor there. Looking back, people just kept me at arm's length. On the bright side, I had a good relationship with my students, and administration said I was doing great. I wasn't perfect, but I put together some solid unit and lesson plans. The summer finally gave me time to reflect. When I told my wife about the reality of my year, she said, "Your job is toxic as fuck." Her words. All the petty snipes, backward compliments, gossip, and so on and so forth. Some of you may be aware of these kind of environments. I wasnt aware until my wife told me I was in one. Because of that, I’ve made a conscious choice for this upcoming year: I am staying in my own lane as much as humanly possible and keeping things strictly professional. We aren't friends. We are coworkers who have a mutual goal.

A considerable percentage of teachers don’t make it past their first five years. I’ve been thinking about why. Here are what I believe are some of the reasons. There may be other reasons that haven’t come to mind. I’ll number them for convenience sake, but they’re in no particular order. College cannot fully prepare you. Even good colleges can’t. Student teaching is a crapshoot. Some people have a wonderful experience and others have a nightmare experience. Toxic admin. They cause problems for most teachers, but new teachers don’t know how to handle it as well. To piggyback off that, if the admin doesn’t want the teacher around they can make evaluations look as bad as possible to justify nonrenewal. Tenured teachers have more protection from admin. Toxic coworkers. So much gossip and backbiting in schools. Teachers conspiring to get rid of admin and/or other teachers. School boards making personnel decisions based on popularity. Hi! I am a first year elementary teacher and I am still waiting on a position. I applied to two counties. First day of school for one is 8/12 and the other starts 8/24. I could hear back from any of them last minute, even the day before. I’ve also been a substitute for the past 2 years so if I don’t get a full time position I’ll continue that, most likely a long-term position. What worries me is that I can’t do anything right now. I could end up anywhere from first to fifth grade so I’m stuck. I’ve started lists of things to buy and ideas for classroom management but I feel like that’s all I can do. Any advice? I just got hired for my first teaching job with a local district after graduation. Upon getting the new hire paperwork, I saw that all of the health insurance plans offered are very expensive, and we’re not allowed to opt out. The lowest tier plan is $429 a month that will be deducted out of my paycheck — and I’ll only be making about 50k annually. I’m a young, single individual with no dependents. PD is mid-August, and school starts at the end of August. Usually I spend July going through my curriculum and brainstorming refinements for next year (I'm under 10 years of teaching) but I'm frozen. I teach middle school, and last year was very frustrating and disillusioning for a variety of reasons, especially when it came to some student behavior issues and incidents. I want to want to get ready ASAP so I can soar next year, but I'm pretty discouraged, anxious, and pessimistic about next year. Whenever it's time to return to school from break, which I will do in two weeks, I find myself agitated and depressed. Granted, almost noone wants to work vs being able to have the freedom to do other things, but it's something I find that makes teaching difficult. It's hard going from having extra time, (and that's with my summer side gigs) , being able to eat decent lunches, not begin work at 7 am and not being in constant GO mode to being swamped at work. It's such a massive shift and I find myself getting overwhelmed, already, at the mental fatigue that is soon coming. Do you feel this as well? I removed everything from my class for the upcoming year because the 8ths destroyed rocking chairs, scissors, markers, card games, fidgets. IT WAS MIND BLOWING the amount of vandalism and blatant destruction. I've noticed an uptick in this since COVID. And, I don't understand this shift. For 20 years, if a student broke something, there was remorse and half the time the family replaced the item. This isn't happening anymore. The past few years, kindergarten has had a pretty awful meal schedule. Breakfast was from 9:00-9:20, and lunch was from 10:30-11:00. School didn’t end until 3:45, which left kids starving by the middle of the day. I implemented a daily snack time, but that came with a lot of issues. Way too many kids weren’t bringing anything for snack time on a regular basis. I let parents know the meal schedule at the start of the year and sent frequent reminders about snack time, but about 70% of the class still came with nothing. I stopped providing snacks myself because financially I just couldn’t do it anymore, so it became a huge hassle to try and have the kids save something from their breakfasts or lunches to have for later. The kids who did bring snacks brought chips, cookies, and other junk foods that caused their own kind of issue. I had to say no to candy and pop many times and find them a “school snack” instead. I mean to me, I feel as though something is wrong with that, especially in middle and high school. I live in a state where no incentives can be given for students to do well. If they perform poorly on the math and English, there are no lower of grades, no being held back, or no chance they won't graduate. It's like it's all on the teacher. A student could make straight A's and just push random choices on these exams and nothing happens except the teachers are told they aren't up to par. Our math is performing poorly in high school at our school and district wide. I think they either need to make standardized test scores a requirement for graduation or moving up a grade, or get rid of these tests completely. Maybe it's time for me to move on as well. Edit... I also feel like some people post on here that work for these companies like PSAT or STAR or other tests and will just say they are good no matter what. Honestly wasn't expecting my post to get so much attention. I read every comment, even if I couldn't reply to all of them. Update: The next day, the same 5 y/o repeated the comments. This time she also said that my name was "bad." Instead of ignoring it, I calmly started explaining that it's not kind to comment on other people's bodies or say hurtful things about them. By coincidence, our admin walked into my classroom while this was happening. She saw the interaction and later asked me to speak with the child's parent after school. I decided I needed to address it, so I spoke with her mother. The mother asked her daughter to apologize to me, but she refused. I'm not upset about that part. She's five. So I have been teaching HS math for 12 years in my building and the last two years the test scores on STAR/PSAT have been falling. This will be the third year we have had lower scores each year. There are no incentives whatsoever allowed in our district to be put on students to do well. If they perform poorly, they can't be held back or have their grades lowered. Our dept has done changes suggested by upper leaders like new curriculum and new strategies in the classroom. The other math teacher has lower scores as well I work with. It's a small school, public that mostly focuses on careers for students. Has any hs math teacher had to deal with this? I hear some other schools in the country are being "taken over" by agencies when this happens. I feel like that leads to increase micromanagement of what is being taught everyday and a good chunk of teachers look to get out. Title is kind of clickbaity, so I’m sorry, but I didn’t know what else to title this without potentially triggering some folks. TRIGGER WARNING: Self injury mentioned. • • • • • So I’m a new art teacher, and I struggled with my mental health all throughout childhood and early adulthood. I have some noticeable self-inflicted scars on my forearms and upper arms. They’re already as faded and flat as they’re gonna get, so I think I have to figure out my day-to-day. I’ll be working with middle schoolers, so they’ll be old enough to understand if they see them. I wear cute cardigans and half sleeves to cover my upper arm scars, but my forearms are harder to cover up without wearing long sleeves year-round. Do I just exist as is and hope it doesn’t get brought up, or is that inappropriate? I’m also looking into tattoos, not just to hide scarring, but because I already have some ink I quite like and would like to add some more anyway. Long sleeves and suck it up? Sorry in advance for the long post. Feeling like a bad teacher rn and could use some advice. I’m teaching English 12 in summer school (BC, Canada) and my students were working on a 5 paragraph in-class essay assignment this week. I originally planned to give them one day (about 3.5 hours) to plan and draft the essay, and 2 hours of the next day’s class to edit and type up their good copy. They did not know the exact essay question in advance to prevent AI use, but I gave them MANY hints, we talked about the topic thoroughly in class, and they were allowed to have their essay writing notes, their novel chapter summaries with important quotes/notes, and all of their annotated sources with them. I took away their phones while they were writing. The question essentially asked them to synthesize evidence from 3 sources discussed in class to write about a common theme among them (the question specified the theme I wanted them to write about).
